About the Owner

My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s after coming across a 'for sale' sign whilst holidaying in the area. It was love at first sight and since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!

typical, cosy cottage perfectly located

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our three kids stayed at the West end Pier Cottage for one week this July. It was an unforgettable experience for us.

The Stone house is equiped with all you need, even a dish washer, a laundry machine, a fire place and games for the Kids and brochures and information of local attractions. Susannah has even put together some suggestions of trips around the area (we enjoyed the Skellig round trip), besides all useful information you can find in advance on the Westcove Web site. The friendlyness of the People is outstanding; Susannah the owner with her great hospitality, Katherine the manager who explained everything at site and by good look we had these very kind neighbours at the Est End Pier Cottage who even provided us wih freshly caught fish!

We found it ideally located directly besides the water for using the rowing boat and for shrimp catching, and at the ring of Kerry for trips. There are stores in Kenmare and small Shops in Sneem, West Cove and Cahardaniel which are open every day. We also loved the crumbles, pies and croissants from the nearby bakery and suggest the Blind Piper Pub for food and live music on Thursday evenings.

We highly recommend the lovely Pier Cottage and we hope to come back one day!

The perfect Irish vacation

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a remarkable Irish vacation Pier Cottage is the perfect choice. I wish to thank Susannah for the supportive and flexible booking, as well as Katherine for making us feel at home. It is difficult to say what was best; waking up to the sight and sounds of seals playing in the cove, the breathtaking view, the ideal location on the Ring of Kerry for shopping and sightseeing, or just the feeling of being at home sitting in front of an open fire. To say the least anyone staying at the Pier Cottage will leave with heavy heart and the intent to come back. Thank you for a fantastic vacation and we will see you in the future. Fantastic summer holiday

  • 5 of 5

We booked the entire cottage, my wife and I and our 2 year old girl and invited my sister and her husband and their 18 month old boy to join us. It was ideal for sharing with another small family and a magical place for children. Hares grazing on the lawn, seals basking on the rocks, boats sailing by... and for adults direct access to the water where we swam and used our canoes and Kayaks every day. Also a local cafe/bakery 10 minutes walks away with amazing coffee and pastries. We got great weather so breakfast/dinner/lunch was served on the benches overlooking Kenmare bay. Traditional cottage with all you need for a holiday and perfect hostess locally.

Peaceful location, amazing views

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, this was perfect. Blackberries to pick along the driveway, bees buzzing amongst the wild fuschia, gorgeous sunrises...

Our family LOVES Pier Cottage. It is an incredible place to stay - we were there for 2 weeks in early September. Gathering yourself to get there is one thing, but BEING there is reward enough. From the excellent facilities (3 BR, 2BA, ocean right out the door) to the friendliness of the people (thank you, Susannah and Katherine), it all made for a memorable stay. There's a row boat you can use to get across the harbor mouth to a beautiful sandy beach (try at low tide, it's easier).

The cottage was clean and warm - internet worked just fine and the large kitchen had just about anything you'd need. Walk out the door and there's a stone beach, which our daughter clambered on several times daily to see what the tide left for her. Behind the cottage is another stone beach, also perfect for learning about tides, nature, and more. There's a fireplace to add to the atmosphere, laundry facilities, and thick stone walls to keep the rain out!

We learned about local markets (Kenmare, Sneem) and got glorious fresh fish and veggies for our meals. We traveled to Skellig Chocolate Company, and Portmagee for more fish. We enjoyed Derrynane beach (and horseback riding there, with Eagle Rock Equestrian Center), and Derrynane House (home of the Liberator, Daniel O'Connell). We got THE BEST croissants in the world from Jane Urquhart, right up the drive at Westcove Bakery. It was wonderful.

Only an hour from Kenmare or Killarney, Pier Cottage is ideally located to explore Co Kerry - but beware, the roads are tiny and winding! Mostly, we preferred to stay home and just absorb the beauty of the place. Westcove harbor has many small fishing and sailboats, some go out daily. There are seals out from shore on a rock, so find the binoculars - they are cool!

We LOVE Pier Cottage and highly recommend it. It would be perfect for a family or larger family gathering (rent both ends). Although it is an hour's drive to larger cities, for those families that just want to absorb the beauty of Ireland, this is the place. There is plenty to do locally, and plenty to do in your own back yard here. I can't recommend this place highly enough - unlimited stars!

Location

From the Owner

We purchased and restored this pair of old coastguard cottages when they came on the market in the early 1990s. Pier Cottage has a unique, magical location situated below Westcove House with its own shingle beach.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Kerry at 65 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : The Black Shop, Castlecove at 2 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Cork at 140 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Waterville and Skellig Bay at 16 Kilometres Nearest Train : Killarney at 45 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : the Blind Piper, Caherdaniel at 4 Kilometres Nearest Beach : White Strand at 2 Kilometres Car: necessary

Pier Cottage is situated 15kms west of Sneem and 15 kms east of Watervillle (with its championship golfcourse ) overlooking the Kenmare Estuary in South Kerry - an ideal location from which to explore this magical part of Ireland.

You can row, fish and shrimp from rocks just by Pier Cottage; or go deep sea, lake or river fishing. In summer there is a fun watersports centre nearby; 5 excellent golf courses within 40 minutes drive - see details below -, horseriding for all ages and endless beautiful walks.

There is plenty to see and do within 15 minutes drive of Westcove:

Visit DERRYNANE HOUSE & NATIONAL PARK, ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house and grounds have been preserved and are open to the public for most of the year. The house is surrounded by spectacular sub-tropical gardens & the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes. Don’t forget to pick up a map of the ‘FAIRY TRAIL’ and see how many ‘fairy houses’ you can discover in the gardens!

In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a timeless pub, frequented by locals - or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere with excellent, home-cooked food and live music on Thursday evenings. In summer, there’s a bustling market in the Community Centre between 10 and 12.30 on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts.

The largest and arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, STAIGUE FORT is about 3 miles above Castlecove, less than 15 minutes drive away. It is worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.

A boat trip to SKELLIG ISLANDS, a Unesco World Heritage site, is a must! Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 218m above sea level and on the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skellig 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

Kerry is a paradise for walkers. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane or venture up into the hills and follow the well signed 'Kerry Way'.

40 minutes drive east along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare Estuary, is the picturesque town of KENMARE, well-known for its varied and tempting shops and teeming with excellent bars and restaurants ... a popular choice for the ladies, especially on Wednesdays when there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouth-watering selection of cheeses, pates and other home-made delicacies!

Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes, to explore the Beara Peninsula which has so much to offer visitors, from the imposing stately home, BANTRY HOUSE, the SCULPTURE PARK and a selection of beautiful gardens ...

The one hour drive to KILLARNEY is probably the most scenic in Ireland - a winding road with magnificent views over its famous lakes and mountains. The town itself has become overly popular, teeming with tourists, huge hotels and souvenir shops, however it's well worth visiting Muckross House and Gardens and the 15th century Muckross Abbey on the lakes shortly before Killarney.

Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary and most serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome. Kerry people are known for their wit... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals .... so enjoy making new friends, the 'craic' (fun) & stories ..and more stories!! Don't forget to catch a live music session one evening!

GOLF: Pier Cottage makes an ideal base for golfers wishing to play the legendary courses of the ‘Kingdom of Kerry’…. Use your own transport or a local minibus can be arranged to take you to any of the following courses – check their websites for details:

Within 25 mins drive – WATERVILLE – www.watervillegolflinks.ie – magnificent links course (always rated one of the top 10 in Ireland) – a must for serious golfers. SKELLIG BAY - www.skelligbay.com – a fairly new challenging course with breathtaking views over sea and lake – reasonable green fees. PARKNASILLA – www.parknasillahotel.ie - just east of Sneem – very scenic 12 hole course – fun for all the family
