About the Owner

My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s … since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the first moment we visited Westcove we got goose pimples - the place blew us away, and we knew it was where we wanted to celebrate our wedding.

Given the opportunity we had, to bring our friends and family together, we wanted to choose somewhere that was really special - Westcove most certainly was that.

We didn't want a hotel wedding, or a standard run of the mill party. We wanted something more, which represented who we are and what we love. Westcove has beautiful views, history, gardens, and most importantly people - the staff are just wonderful and friendly and were very accommodating.

We were able to put together the wedding of our dreams, and it was even better than expected! You can't book the weather but you can have an amazing venue - I would thoroughly recommend this beauty spot to anyone who wants to put their personal stamp on their own wedding, this place will certainly give you a beautiful blank canvas to work with people around you to help.

All our friends and family loved the place, not too difficult to get to by air, Kerry and Cork airports relatively close by, and hire cars were easy to organise and meant people could explore the gorgeous surroundings and make a holiday out of it too.

I can't wait to go back, and re-live the dream again! A huge thank you to Susannah and Katherine for all your support and help... we couldn't have done any of this without you!

An exquisite example of genteel Irish country life

  • 5 of 5

Our family reserved and fully utilized the 3 buildings of this elegant Property for a week in June, 2015 when we gathered for a celebration and remembrance of the life of our son who loved this part of Kerry more than any place on earth. What a joyous and wonderful week! The staff could not have been more accommodating, addressing our every need; the meals that were prepared for us (with seating of up to 50 people on occasion) were delicious, and the facilities were perfectly suited to the multinational and broad age range of guests who joined us. I would highly recommend this vacation/respite spot to anyone!

Amazing Family Visit!

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from 12 days at the Westcove properties! 33 of us joined together to celebrate the amazing life of the family patriarch who would have turned 90 in April! The trip was originally planned for this milestone event but when a sudden illness took him from us earlier this year, the family felt we should still go forward with our plans. And we are so glad we did! Westcove was nothing short of perfect! The accommodations were comfortable, clean and provided the perfect alternative to a typical hotel vacation. Katherine and the staff were friendly and warm and exceptionally helpful, both throughout the planning process and our stay. And staying in one location allowed us to have the comfort of our own bedrooms and plenty of space to join together for meals and socializing. And the 17 grandkids all got to bunk together, an added bonus. I cannot say enough to truly explain how perfect our visit was! Well worth a visit and very reasonable. You won't be disappointed! Ireland and Westcove were a wonderful vacation we will always remember!

The Perfect Alternative Wedding Venue

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for something different from the usual wedding venue and when we first found Westcove we knew we were on to something. When we finally had a chance to visit the property and meet with Suzannah and Katherine and discuss with them the ideas we had for our wedding, we knew we had found what we wanted.

Westcove House is such an amazing property and is absolutely ideal for a couple that wants to create their own wedding - from scratch. With plenty of help from friends, family and Katherine and her team we pulled of an amazingly unique and special wedding with trad in the main house and DJ and dancing in the Stables and our closest friends and family staying with us in each of the properties for the wedding weekend.

Katherine and team created a delicious menu for us and the food and service was impeccable, despite the fact that we had a few more guests for the meal than they are used to! We just want to say thank you once again to everyone at Westcove House for helping us create such a unique and intimate wedding. It's a weekend we will cherish forever!

Idyllic Retreat by the Atlantic Ocean

  • 5 of 5

Westcove House is situated in a fantastic location, surrounded by lush green fields, mountain peaks and vast blue sky. The private harbour lends a wonderful quaintness to the property.

The eccentric house is stylishly decorated, the grounds are beautifully kept and the views of the Atlantic estuary and Kerry mountains and Bearra peninsula to the South are spectacular.

Katherine's cooking is hearty and homely in the very best sense. All of our catering requests were enthusiastically met.

The property is located close to beautiful sandswept beaches, Staigue Fort and other points of local interest.

A wonderful choice for a family reunion, intimate wedding or anniversary setting, or in our case, a yoga retreat.

Wonderful Wedding Week at Westcove

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I had our wedding celebration at Westcove House in August 2014 and it was perfect. We were able to house our guests on site for the week- the houses were all beautiful and very comfortable. The setting is peaceful and beautiful. We had everything we could need and more at the house. Susanne was excellent to work with when booking and planning our trip- provided many excellent tips and was easy to access for questions. Once we arrive Katherine made us comfortable and was there to help with anything we needed. The house was the perfect location to take day trips and hikes from. We cannot wait to visit again.

The house worked perfectly for a wedding celebration. We did a small ceremony on the front lawn, had dinner in the dining room, local musicians playing, and celebration in the stables. It could not have been more perfect of a location to get married. The food by Katherine and others was superb. We had dancing lessons with Bernie the night prior which allowed us to attempt some Irish dancing during the reception which was a blast. The venue was perfect for a wedding and made all guests feel comfortable and at home. I highly recommend Westcove House for anyone considering for vacation or wedding accommodations.

The Stables - Perfect !

  • 4 of 5

Our party of ten had a lovely and comfortable stay at the Stables in May 2013 (6 adults + 4 children). Property was clean and well maintained inside and out … but with charm ! Great facilities for the kids (and men) with the play room, boat, bbq, swings and sauna (although we didn’t get to use it). The open fireplace added to the ambiance and was much appreciated during the coolish spring evenings. Great help and assistance from Susannah prior to arriving and the same caring treatment from Katherine upon arrival. First time in Ireland and we loved it ; beaches, monuments, walks, Guinness and the warm welcome from all the locals. The Stables is perfectly located right on the water’s edge, nice big garden and with lovely hilly walks at hand. Derrynane beach very close by – breathtaking. Also fully recommend the local butcher in Sneem !

Location

From the Owner

Westcove is very dear to our family - we have spent many years upgrading and improving Westcove House, and renovating the Stables, Garden Cottage and Pier Cottage whilst retaining their character and charm. The income we receive from renting out our properties at Westcove when we ourselves are not here, helps with the ever-increasing costs involved with the upkeep of period properties, whilst hopefully enabling us to share this much loved, unique and magical place with others for many more generations to come. We are aware that you, our visitors, will all have different requirements and interests, so we try to be as flexible as possible to ensure your stay at Westcove surpasses all your expectations.

There is plenty to see and do within 15 minutes drive of Westcove:

Visit DERRYNANE HOUSE & NATIONAL PARK, ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house and grounds’ have been preserved and are open to the public in the summer. The 30 minute video of his life and times is fascinating! The house is surrounded by spectacular sub-tropical gardens & the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes.

In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a timeless pub, frequented by locals - or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere with excellent, home-cooked food and live music on Thursday evenings. In summer, there’s a bustling market in the Community Centre between 10 and 12.30 on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts.

The largest and arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, STAIGUE FORT is about 3 miles above Castlecove, less than 15 minutes drive away. It is worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.

A boat trip to SKELLIG ISLANDS, a Unesco World Heritage site, is a must! Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 218m above sea level and on the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skellig 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

Kerry is a paradise for walkers. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane or venture up into the hills and follow the well signed 'Kerry Way'.

40 minutes drive east, along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare Estuary, is the picturesque town of KENMARE, well-known for its varied and tempting shops and teeming with excellent bars and restaurants ... a popular choice for the ladies, especially on Wednesdays when there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouth-watering selection of cheeses, pates and other home-made delicacies!

Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes

to explore the Beara Peninsula which has so much to offer visitors.... the imposing stately home - BANTRY HOUSE - the SCULPTURE PARK and a selection of beautiful gardens .

The one hour drive to KILLARNEY is probably the most scenic in

Ireland - a winding road with magnificent views over its famous lakes and mountains. The town itself has become overly popular, teeming with tourists, huge hotels and souvenir shops... however it's well worth visiting Muckross House and Gardens and the 15th century Muckross Abbey on the lakes shortly before Killarney.

Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary and most serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome. Kerry people are known for their wit... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals .... so enjoy making new friends, the 'craic' (fun) & stories ..and more stories!! Don't forget to catch a live music session one evening!

Westcove makes an ideal base for golfers wishing to play the legendary courses of the ‘Kingdom of Kerry’…. Set off after a full Irish breakfast and relax with a delicious home cooked dinner on your return. Use your own transport or a local minibus can be arranged to take you to any of the following courses – check their websites for details:

Within 25 mins drive – WATERVILLE – www.watervillegolflinks.ie – magnificent links course (always rated one of the top 10 in Ireland) – a must for serious golfers. SKELLIG BAY - www.skelligbay.com – a fairly new challenging course with breathtaking views over sea and lake – reasonable green fees. PARKNASILLA – www.parknasillahotel.ie - just east of Sneem – very scenic 12 hole course – fun for all the family.

Within 45 mins drive – RING OF KERRY – www.ringofkerrygolf.com – 18 holes with panoramic views over Kenmare Estuary – take a buggy unless you are a mountain goat! KENMARE – www.kenmaregolf.com – the first 9 holes of beautifully kept parkland are followed by a hillier 2nd 9 – good value for money and an excuse to visit this ‘shopper’s paradise’.

About 1¼ hours drive DOOKS – www.dooks.com – a classic links with views over to the Dingle Peninsular. KILLARNEY - www.killarneygolf.com - 3 courses on the legendary lakes.
