There is a flat screen TV in the sitting room which offers multi-channel viewing. The kitchen/dining room has a small dishwasher and large free-standing fridge- freezer. Immediately outside is a wrought iron table and four chairs for eating in the sunshine and the cottage provides 2 deck chairs and a parasol for use while relaxing around the pool.

About the property

Higher House Cottages

Honeysuckle Cottage and The Mouse House are 2 cottages nestling in the lea of the Quantock Hills. They have fabulous views of the surrounding countryside, including the Vale of Taunton, Exmoor and the Black down hills. This is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The swimming pool is shared by both cottages and is in a sheltered courtyard which is part of the Higher House Estate. Higher House was originally a 17th century farm, extended in the 1920s by Mary Ellis, daughter of motor car magnate, Evelyn Ellis. Mary was the first speed trial racing driver in the UK. The cottages have their own garden and sit in 8 acres of land which climb the Quantock Hills. You can picnic and enjoy stunning views and sunsets here.

The cottage was cosy and charming, a real hideaway.

  • 5 of 5

We were really very pleased with Honeysuckle cottage. The place was so cosy. Jenny the owner had left a welcome basket which was a really nice touch.

The location is idyllic at the foot of the Quantock hills, we will always remember hearing the horses hooves as they rode along the lane alongside the cottage as we lay in bed in the mornings.

The cottage grounds were beautifully landscaped and well kept. We enjoyed playing tennis on the tennis courts and the gardens were there for us to enjoy. I would highly recommend Honeysuckle cottage without reservation.

Storybook cottage in the Somerset hills with a pool.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location set high on the Quantock Hills in Somerset. Spent 7 lovely quiet nights in this old world cottage. It was an ideal location to explore the Somerset area out of Taunton that my ancestors left many years ago. The cottage was well equipped and anything we were missing the owner happily found for us. Met another lovely couple renting the cottage next door and look forward to seeing them again. Would definitely stay here again on another trip. great for a couple or small family.

Honeysuckle Cottage, West Bagborough

  • 4 of 5

Overall the cottage met the description on the HomeAway website. It is set in a wonderful quiet location with beautiful gardens and views of the open countryside. We were lucky with the weather so able to take advantage of the swimming pool too. Our host was lovely and a little basket of treats was provided for our arrival.

Fantastic walking to be enjoyed from the village without the need to use the car.

The use of the West Somerset Railway is a 'must do' as is a trip to Dunster Castle. The Rising Sun pub in the village serves excellent food.

All in all we had an excellent holiday.

The only negative comment we have is that the bathroom could do with some attention as the bath panel was rotten, the shower did not work and the bath stained (but clean).

Owner's Response: Jamie & Linda were a really nice couple and we enjoyed having them here. I quite understand the comments about the bathroom. We did leave a note explaining about the panel (which is being replaced on Thursday of this week) and the shower is now working perfectly. I'm only sorry that they had this inconvenience.

Cosy, well equipped cottages with a helpful owner

  • 5 of 5

Honeysuckle Cottage has a really cosy feel to it, with a well equipped kitchen and delightful bedrooms. My favourite room was the lounge with two comfortable sofas, lots of cushions and an effective coal-effect electric fire which added to the ambience. It was also immaculate. The location is superb (good views) with wonderful walks up into the Quantocks, also a shorter walk starting along the front of the property which was enjoyable to do at sunset and a great pub within 3 minutes walk.

What really made my time special there was also how reactive Jenny, the owner, was to any query.

I have already recommended Honeysuckle Cottage to friends, and family.

The Mouse Hole is also really pleasant, open plan downstairs with a great mezzanine bedroom. Linen in both cottages good quality and super soft so I slept well in both cottages. I stayed in Mouse Hole the month before as I stayed in the cottages for several weeks between December 2014 and March 2015 following a 1yr sabbatical in Australia and a relocation from Oxfordshire.

Bishops Lydeard is the nearest large village with a well-stocked Co-op, a cafe, two pubs, a butchers, paper shop and a very good community church (Kings).

As you can tell by my review, I loved my time at the cottages and made the most of the location!

West Bagborough looks out onto Exmoor National Park. Its true location is the Quantock Hills which was the first ever area of Outstanding Natural Beauty created in 1957 in the UK. The area offers spectacular views and walking across the 12 miles of the Quantocks which eventually lead to the coast at East Quantoxhead. This area is famous for the time the poets Wordsworth and Coleridge lived here. Coleridge lived in a cottage only 4 miles away in the lovely village of Nether Stowey. You can follow the walk he took while writing many of his poems. There are many beautiful old houses and gardens to visit, as well as enjoying the coast with its site of scientific interest at Kilve.
