Cosy, comfortable stone farm cottages with sea and mountain views - River Cottage

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Two stone cottages, 'ANNIES', sleeping 6 and 'RIVER', sleeping 4 , near Inch

River Farm comprises two cottages for rental - ANNIES COTTAGE, sleeping 6 and one of the most popular holiday cottages in Kerry and RIVER COTTAGE, sleeping 4 - an original Kerry Farmhouse that has been lovingly renovated and updated over the last ten years. Both cottages are surrounded by fields and a small stream runs through the property. It is very safe for children as both cottages are approached via a small ‘dead end’ lane which runs up to the mountain behind the cottages. The owners fields are occupied by pet sheep and lambs (in season), together with donkeys and free range hens. Views of the sea are possible from the garden as well as from Annie’s Cottage. Inch Beach with it's four miles of white sand and dunes(and increasingly a surfing and paragliding mecca) is no more than 15 minutes drive, whilst the beauty of Killarney National Park and it's lakes are also within easy reach. A local grocery shop (8am to 10pm, daily) is only 10 mins. walk away. Dogs are welcome.

Proximity to the best Kerry attractions and sites: Annie's Cottage is ideally situated for Killarney National Park, and the Kerry Way, the Dingle Peninsula and Tralee.

A 30 minute drive will allow you to visit Muckross House, the famous Killarney Lakes, Angel Falls, Ross Castle, the old Copper mInes, the Gap of Dunloe and Kate Kearney's Cottage as well as walk throughout the beautiful meadows, mountains and woods of Killarney National Park.

From Killarney you can embark on the Kerry Way by foot or cycle or drive to the end of the Ring of Kerry (and back) visiting Killorglin, Glebeigh, Caherciveen, Valentia Island, Waterville, Caherdaniel, Sneem and Kenmare - a memorable journey indeed.

Similar excursions by car and foot can take place on the Dingle Peninsular discovering the wild scenery, breathtaking mountain passes and white sandy beaches. This peninsular also has the highest concentration of megalithic sites in Europe.

A catalogue of festivals - food, music, culture, film and horseracing - take place throughout the year

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your "River Cottage" for our delayed summer holidays in Ireland. As we had hoped, the Gulf stream gave us not too cold weather and there was always sunshine during our walks around the beaches, cliffs and towns. Your lists and hints were very helpful in finding good daily activities.

Alma loved the animals, especially Yala (the dog) and trying to pet the brown cat also

We wish you and your family all the ebst for the future. Thank you again!.

Lovely. Very welcoming and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a wonderful week in such a relaxing place. The cottage is comfortable and beautifully furnished. We particularly appreciated the wide range of books distributed throughout, including in the loo - a winner !

This has been an ideal base from which to explore the Dingle peninsula and also visit the mountains near Killarney. We've had around 4 hours good walking every day in contrasting places. We recommend driving through the Gap of Dunloe and walking in the Black Valley. Also, climbing up Caherconree, walking around the Maharees Peninsula, climbing between Mas an Tompian and Piaras Mor, near Mt. Brandon or Cruach Marthain, above Dunquin. But everywhere we have been has been wonderful, and all the people we've met are friendly and interesting. We'll miss the peace & quiet.

Thanks again. NB Note for prospective visitors: If you have a dog you might like to know in advance that some walks are not possible - for instance we wanted to climb Brandon Mountain, and explore around (and perhaps go up) Carrauntoohil, but the 'no dogs' signs in both places were more forbidding than some of the others. On the whole we found that if we talked to local farmers and checked with them, the dog was not a problem.

Lovely Cottage, perfect for families!!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the dingle peninsula. It is a quiet place in the middle of nature though it is close to the main road. Our kids enjoyed playing with the animals there. The owners take obviously good care about the cottage and its surrounding land. It is perfectly equipped inside and it was very clean. We were excited about all the lovely details inside. It was perfect for getting an impression about Irish lifestyle. Thank you very much - absolutely recommendable!!

Owner's Response: The cottage is surrounded by 4 acres of garden and fields and is a quiet oasis, away from the busy tourist locations and roads that are very noticeable in the summer months. Our lambs & donkeys help to keep the grass under control and the views of the sea and mountains behind remind us daily of what a beautiful place this part of the Dingle Peninsula is. We try and provide a sense of 'homeliness' for our guests' stay with a range of relevant historical and geographical books, maps, board games, antiques, cushions, rugs and an open fire (with logs) to enjoy when the weather is not so kind. When the weather is good, you can walk to the sea in 10 mins or the Slieve Mish mountains behind in 5 minutes from the cottage door. Plenty of space, quiet and peace to relax and enjoy your holiday in this beautiful part of the world.

The perfect country getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I travel to Ireland often and memories of our time in Dingle are right at the top of our experiences. Nick's cottage is just charming and everything we were looking for in a home base for our travels around Ireland. The area is charming. We met some of the locals and enjoyed heading down for lunch at inch Beach. It's also an easy and scenic drive right into Dingell proper. It was lambing season and such fun to see all of the little ones frolicking about the countryside. I can't recommend this place more wholeheartedly. It was just such a wonderful stay. Thank you so much and we look forward to returning! - Corbin and Thatcher

Owner's Response: Corbin and Thatcher were lovely appreciative guests. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy their stay at River Cottage and we would gladly host them again, should they decide to visit Kerry on a future occasion. Regards, Nick & Anne

Priceless Memories

  • 5 of 5

I think Nick already entered the comments I left in their guest book, but I wanted to be sure to put a review on here and provide my 5 star rating. River Cottage is STUNNING. Being able to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the mountain view behind the cottage before everyone else was up is a memory I won't soon forget. My daughters have already asked to go back and see the donkeys. I highly recommend staying at River Cottage. I don't think its possible to not enjoy the scenery there. The location was perfect for exploring. I'd go back in a minute!

Owner's Response: Oh Thanks so much! 'STUNNING' is an adjective that is more usually & liberally used by real estate agents when describing a property for sale. But we are more than happy to receive superlative comments such as this and try in every case to both match the description of our traditional Irish cottage to the actual holiday but also add a 'service element' that creates some good memories of the holiday. Jeni and her family were a delight to host and we would be very happy if they returned to River Cottage again one day.

River Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at River Cottage. It was everything one could hope for in a holiday house, a home from home for a week.Thank you Nick and Anne and family for letting us share your beautiful spot in Kerry. Our boys, 4 and 6 absolutely loved the animals, running abit wild and the lego and dvds when they had worn themselves out! It is a great location halfway to Dingle and Killarney for exploring beaches, Slea Head and Muckross House & traditional farms in Killarney. So many highlights, we could easily have stayed another week!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind comments. We've had a lot of experience over the years trying to travel and stay in 'strange' places ourselves with lots of children in tow whilst keeping them amused and there's no doubt that a large collection of pet animals, a stream to get wet and muddy in, a safe and large expanse of grounds, a box of lego and some Disney movies is not bad for starters !! Wer'e only glad that some of these were appreciated by you all. We'd love to have you come and stay again.

Great stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time in River cottage. We were there for one week with 2 small children and the setup is ideal! They thoroughly enjoyed the animals and we were able to relax when they were outside as it is a totally safe environment. Nick and Anne are extremely helpful and well organised and the girls very welcoming. Being exactly 10 minutes drive from Inch beach, we were there every day - ate at Sammy´s a few times, built many sand castles, went for long walks etc. The cottage is also a good base for Dingle, Annascaul and we took the scenic route to Camp a few times which I highly recommend. This accommodation works very well for a family and for exploring Kerry. And even though it was August, we did enjoy a few log fires in the comfy sitting room at night.

  • RIVER COTTAGE is at least 150 years old and is a classic 'Three room stone-built Kerry farmhouse'. It has been sympathetically renovated over the last ten years, retaining many of the features of the original cottage, including slate floors, lime wash walls, sash windows and the large open fireplace and wood burning stove in the main living room. The cottage has full oil-fired central heating and has a southerly aspect so is light , cosy and warm throughout the year. The spacious kitchen and dining area have been added on to the back of the cottage and were designed for our own family of nine. As such, they provide extensive entertaining, cooking and relaxation space for a small cottage and open out onto the wooden decking and barbeque area and pictoresque cottage garden at the rear. Views of Caherconree (Ireland's 4th highest mountain) and the Slieve Mish mountains are possible from both the kitchen and dining areas.
