Penmon is a charming 300 year old farmhouse located in the tranquil village of Gharb on the west side of the island of Gozo.

The house was renovated with family in mind serving as a getaway from the hectic city life for its current owners. The Pool is a uniquely designed rock formation lagoon type pool with waterfall surrounded by a beautifully landscaped garden.

Penmon has been immaculately converted and beautifully furnished with Indian Hardwood furniture and leather sofas.

The swimming pool, located at the back of the house is a large 33 feet x 22 feet south facing haven, with a spacious charcoal barbecue and sunbathing area, sun loungers plus outside shower facility. And for that complete Mediterranean feeling, an open gazebo overlooks the pool for outside catering.

With our unique design, modern en suite facilities in all of our bedrooms, two living areas and a conservatory, you're sure to enjoy your stay with us whether you're here on business or for some fun. Penmon consists of 4 bedrooms, 3 of which are double beds whilst the 4th and largest bedroom consists of 3 single beds and a bunkbed. A TV is also available in this bedroom.

There are 2 living rooms including Digital TV’s with cable channel connections, open plan Conservatory, newly fitted Kitchen with many facilities and Dining room.

Modern ensuite facilities are found in each bedroom.

For outdoor living, we have large sun terraces and al fresco dining by the pool.

Wi-Fi is free with the latest Fibre Optic connection with an incredible download speed of 75Mbs and an upload speed of 10Mbs. A telephone is also available and is free of charge. All calls to landline phones are possible and are all Free of charge.

We all had a wonderful time in this well-equipped farmhouse. All the rooms were lovely with excellent ensuites and plenty of wardrobe space. The pool was perfect for cooling off in and it was great to be able to sit outside all day long. Kitchen is well equipped.

Can't fault this holiday and the service we received when booking etc.

Perfect Stay

We had a wonderful stay at Penmon Farmhouse for three weeks in November/December. This is a very special property, historic and charming, yet fully updated to the highest standards. It is situated on a quiet street in the lovely village of Gharb, just steps away from the open countryside with miles of walks through terraced fields with vistas to the sea. The property is beautifully decorated and extremely clean and well maintained. The pool area is quite special. Mark, the owner, was very helpful in making sure we were settled and well taken care of during our stay. The housekeeper, Nancy, was great. She could answer all our questions and direct us to everything we needed. We loved the village, and found a grocery nearby, the post office and two very good restaurants: Grazie Mille and Salvina, which was only around the corner. We thank Mark and Nancy for a truly wonderful experience.

Brilliant!

We were a group of 11 people and stayed for a 4 nights. First of all, Mark is very helpful and friendly and will assist you where necessary.

The farmhouse is very well equipped and in excellent condition. All the rooms have modern en-suite bathrooms, as well as a great kitchen and pool/bbq area. It is also located in a very quiet area in Gharb.

Would defenately reccomend this Farmhouse to anyone, including families with small children. Will probably be booking again for next year!

Impressive farmhouse

We had a very enjoyable stay in this lovely farmhouse. The accommodation was spacious and the kitchen was extremely well equipped. Fun was had by all in the spacious pool. The village of Gharb was very pleasant with a well stocked shop although the Lighthouse supermarket in San Lawrence was excellent. For a meal with a view the rooftop terrace of the Rangers Bar and Restaurant Gharb is to be recommended.

Our dealings with Mark and his daughter who met us at the airport were pleasurable and straightforward.

Beautiful villa in a lovely village

There were 10 people in our group, varying in age from 10 upwards. The villa provided us all with everything we needed. The space was enough that we did not feel crowded. All of the bedrooms were lovely and spacious. The air conditioning was very effective and inexpensive .

We ate out several times in the village. As always the people of Gozo were very warm and friendly.

Mark was also very helpful throughout the entire booking process, Our needs were met.

I would strongly recommend Penmon farmhouse to anyone.

high quality family accommodation

We had a really great holiday. The accommodation was good quality and the pool was great. The kitchen was well equipped and outdoor entertaining area was fantastic. The only flaw was that next door was a building site with noise from large machinery most days which spoilt any peace and quiet. Not the owners fault but not restful.

L-Għarb is a particularly attractive and interesting village and one of Gozo’s oldest. Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements (not visible today). The Phoenicians were here followed by the Romans and Byzantines. The name L-Għarb, though, is Arabic, suggesting the establishment of an organised community here during Arab domination between 870 and 1090 AD.

L-Għarb is a traditional village. Its character is distinctly rural and until very recently it was populated almost exclusively by people who worked the surrounding fields in this fertile area of Gozo. They retained an old Maltese dialect, with a rich vocabulary of old words and pronunciations long since discarded by the rest of the population. The people of l-Għarb are also renowned craftsmen mostly famous for the manufacture of the unique “l-Għarb blade”, a tradiitonal sharp knife popularly known as the “Sikkina ta’ l-Għarb”. Even today, L-Għarb is home to blacksmiths, locksmiths, cotton weavers and lace makers, carpenters and masters in cane-work. Gharb is also known for producing able fishermen, while Għarb shepherds produce the best Gozo Cheese on the Island.

This makes it a very appropriate place for the l-Għarb Folklore Museum, which occupies an historic house in the heart of the village. The 28 rooms contain all sorts of curiosities linked with traditional trades, crafts and daily life. The building that houses the museum was once home to Frenc Mercieca (1892-1967), popularly known as Frenc ta’ l-L-Għarb, a saintly ‘wise man’ who cured many people with a mix of medicinal herbs and prayer to Our Lady. He left doctors perplexed by his successes and his reputation spread rapidly throughout the Maltese Islands and even abroad.

Also open to visitors is the former home of another saintly resident, Karmni Grima, the woman who heard the voice of Our Lady at Ta’ Pinu and began the devotions that have turned it into Malta’s most important shrine. Ta’Pinu , today a large and important church, lies on the edge of Għarb and is well worth a visit. So too is the hill opposite which has a steep but pleasant path leading to the top, adorned with white marble statues of the stations of the cross.

Also close to Gharb is the Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village, where various handicrafts are made and sold. Visitors can watch craftspeople creating mouth-blown glass, Gozo lace, pottery and filigree, and of course purchase the results.

Historically, Gharb played an importrant role in safeguarding Malta. Gharb’s coastal lookouts were, for example, the first to signal the arrival from Sicily of reinforcements for the beleaguered Maltese under the Knights of St. John in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. During that time of constant threat from the Ottoman Turks and marauding Berbers, the L-Għarb lookouts were crucial, sending smoke signals to Malta to warn of approaching peril.

L-Għarb is the second oldest village parish in Gozo, established in 1679. The old church, known today as “Taż-Żejt”, served as the parish church for fifty years. It is called ‘Taz-Zejt’ (zejt meaning oil) because of a legend that says that an old woman found oil oozing from the side of the church, spread it over her body and was cured of her ills.

Today’s impressive Parish Church and Collegiate Basilica that dominates the pretty square at the heart of the village, was built in 1699 and consecrated in 1729. It is dedicated to the Visit of Our Lady to her cousin St. Elizabeth, popularly known as the Feast of the Visitation. The feast day is on the 31st May each year and the festa is held on the first weekend of July.

A short and pleasant walk out of the village towards the coastal cliffs is the tiny chapel of St.Demetrius. Legend has it that Turkish raiders once stole the young son of a local lady called Sgugina. After the poor mother wept her distress in front of the sacred altar painting of St Demetrius in the chapel, the story goest that the saint was seen riding his horse out of the painting, charging the Turks and returning Żgugina’s son safely to his mother.

The area around Gharb and St Demetrius’ Chapel is delightful for walking and enjoying the countryside. If you follow the little road along the Wied il-Mielaħ (valley) you will have a lovely meander through fertile Gozitan countryside before reaching the sea and a dramatic natural rock ‘window’ very much less visited than the iconic Azure Window at Dwejra.

Alternatively, you could just sit peacefully in Gharb’s picturesque village square, admiring the view of the church and the unique hand-carved stone balconies that adorn the village’s oldest homes, and watching the Gozitan world go by.
