Charming tranquil Tuscan villa set in the exclusive Villa Arceno Chianti estate

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Dec-2016
Arco al Poggio, 2 bedroom apartment, exclusive porch and garden, swimming pool

THE APARTMENT

Set into the beautiful Chianti hills of Villa Arceno, a vast private estate and nature reserve, the apartment comprises three floors within a renovated traditional Tuscan farmhouse split into three properties.

Exclusively private large airy apartment and covered patio with postcard views facing south over the Chianti countryside. Two large comfortable 'Tuscan' double bedrooms with ceiling fans. Each with separate bathrooms. True Tuscan 'essence' with all modern conveniences, internet access, Wi-Fi, T.V. DVD player and iPod dock. Furnished to the highest standards with local antiques and designs the apartment accommodates comfortably four persons to give a unique and very stylish, comfortable experience, a true 'home from home'. A large and comfortable dining area seating eight and an excellently appointed kitchen for keen or even 'professional' cooks!

Accessed by its own entrance at ground level from a secluded private garden into a small courtyard leading to a porch which also houses a wood fired oven. A stairway leads up to a private covered patio 'the Loggia' with exclusive use for 'al fresco' dining seating six. The apartment is accessed directly from the Loggia into a spacious living area with fireplace and a dining area accommodating up to eight people and kitchen. At one end a bedroom and bathroom with shower, opposite, a stairway leads to a spacious and romantic master bedroom with beautiful views over the vineyards and the village of San Gusmè. A bathroom elegantly finished with a large bathtub and shower serves the master bedroom. Guests also have the use of a tranquil private swimming pool.

THE ESTATE OF VILLA ARCENO: The estate of Arceno covers 1000 hectares of forest, vineyards, olive groves, cypress avenues, dotted with traditional farmhouses “the Casali”, some of which are enigmatic, romantic ruins awaiting restoration.

The “Villa” (Manor House) of the estate dates from the 16th century along with its own chapel, a romantic park and lake. From the Villa the original owners would have managed the estate directing the farmhands and workers who once lived in the Casali with the livestock.

Il Poggio was once a working Casale but is now restored with modern benefits, it now houses those who wish to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Chianti countryside.

AROUNDABOUTS: From Il Poggio there are views towards the famous Crete, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and beyond towards Monte Amiata. To the rear of the Casale lies the medieval walled village of San Gusmè, a short 15 minute walk through the vines where, if one pleases may have a drink at the village café and admire panoramic views in almost all directions to Siena and its Torre del Mangia.

All areas of the estate are reached by “strade bianche”, literally “white roads” which are unpaved. Although used by the public these roads are quiet, allowing walking, cycling and jogging at one’s own pace. The surrounding region is stuffed with history, art, food and wine. Siena, with its famous “Palio” an exciting adrenaline fuelled horse race (2nd July and 16th August) is only 15 minutes away. With Italy’s excellent road network, Florence, San Giminiano, le Crete, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona and Arezzo are with easy reach for day trips. In the other direction Umbria with Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Todi.

AMENITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT: Famous for food and wine there are many places to see and go to in order to discover the flavours of Chianti. One might be a passive or active participant, either eating and drinking the produce or by taking cooking or winery courses at source and making the resulting produce oneself. If one is the more active type, a diverting round of golf or horse riding might be the ticket. There are spas and the seaside to indulge in should relaxing there be preferred.

Packed full of history and art, an almost endless list of galleries, exhibitions, museums, churches, palaces and other diverse artisanal places are to be discovered.

About the Owner

Anna and James, we are an Italian-Anglo couple who enjoy their lives between London, Milan and Tuscany. We have a busy life but also also love to have relaxing moments in Arceno where we find tranquillity after the buzzing of a big city. Love art, music, good food and even better wine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Entering the Villa Arceno estate, you are immediately enveloped in a beautiful landscape of cypress lined hills, olive groves, vineyards and stone farmhouses, creating a perfect Tuscan scene. Il Poggio comes with a pretty garden, swimmng pool, and is elevated across two upper floors, giving outstanding views of the nearby village and the estate. The property is furnished to an excellent standard and offers every convenience for your stay. The large, private terrace is the most perfect setting to enjoy every meal and was saturated with almond blossom over Easter. Il Poggio is perfectly located to enjoy the amenities of nearby Castelnuovo Beradenga, which offers a good choice of local osterias and a local winery as well as a short drive to the historic towns Sienna and Florence, all manageable within a day. A perfect to relax and soak up the Italian sunshine, robust red wines and fabulous restaurants.

Like Returning Home.

  • 5 of 5

We always love returning to this lovely property because it has everything one could possibly need while staying in Tuscany. The location, scenery, vistas, well maintained gardens, are always a plus. There are wonderful, convenient restaurants nearby or markets should you want to cook in. The property is also well maintained and managed and the bountiful welcome basket stocked with the first evening's meal and the morning breakfast is a highlight. Excellent wine, beer, coffee and sparkling water round out the beverages. We will return again and again to this lovely property.

Beautiful country home, relaxing atmosphere, great views, fabulous walks.

  • 5 of 5

This place is fabulous. Vanessa met us and toured us through the house and around the yard, which includes a pool. She explained the use of the appliances, showed us where everything was in the house, gave us her contact information and restaurant suggestions. A very warm welcome.

ll Poggio is accessed via a drive over country roads and up a hill to a position near the top. Walking up stone steps to a covered porch with views over the valley brings you to the main level. Sitting in this outside space with wine and cheese in the late afternoon away from distracting noises is very relaxing.

The main level kitchen, dining and sitting areas share the same large space in an open concept. The kitchen features modern appliances, is well stocked with all the kitchen necessities and was an invitation to cook our own Italian meals. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast here, with supplies bought at the local grocery store, before starting our day. The welcome basket (a great touch) contained coffee, cold meat, cheese, jam, honey, pasta, sauce, bread and wine. The dining area has a sizeable table and 8 chairs. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and lounging chairs next to the large fireplace with wood burning stove.

The bedroom on the main level is roomy with plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom with shower is next to this room, as is the washing machine.

The second bedroom is upstairs. It is larger than the main floor bedroom, with a large wardrobe, desk, couch and chairs. The adjacent spacious bathroom is modern with a great tub and shower combination.

All windows in the home have screens so they can be opened to allow a cool night breeze in and keep any insects out. The town of San Gusmé, about a kilometer away, is visible from the second floor bedroom through the vineyard. You can hear the peel of the church bell.

A twenty-minute walk in a bucolic setting of trees and vines leads to the Arceno winery. After a tasting of the locally produced wines we walked about 30 minutes to San Gusmé for some pasta and pizza in this small, quiet town.

A short drive from the house is the town of Castelnuovo Berardegna. Go to Bengodi Enoteca Ristorante. Have the risotto. Enjoy the Thursday morning market.

Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, Castellina in Chianti are all within a short, scenic drive of Il Poggio, as are some great vineyards in this south region of Chianti.

Make this your home base in this part of Tuscany. This is the Italian experience you came for.

Beautiful, well appointed villa - perfect location for Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We were two couples staying for a week in this beautiful, well appointed villa. Highly recommend. The owner and caretaker were very responsive. We can hardly wait to go back to explore more of Tuscany from the comfort of this home away from home.

II Poggio - Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned to the UK after two weeks in Italy. After touring in the first week, the second week spent at the II Poggio villa in Tuscany was idyllic. It was a great place to relax after spending time in the cities. It was a brilliant base from where to explore Tuscany.

The views from the balcony and all the windows around the house were stunning. It was exactly how we had pictured it and hoped it would be. The 10 minute walk from the villa through the vineyards to San Gusme under a clear blue sky was one of the highlights of our time in Italy. There was everything we needed in the villa, the welcome basket was a lovely gesture and asking us in advance what else we would need on arrival was really appreciated. The way the villa

is set out was excellent for the 4 of us staying there – with bedrooms / bathrooms on either side and a choice of whether

you wanted to be upstairs or downstairs. Vanessa talking us through how to use everything and leaving instructions was so helpful. The areas in the garden and around the shared pool area allowed us to relax in the sun through the day. We loved spending evenings relaxing on the balcony as the sun faded and sampling local wines, with some candles kindly provided to keep the mosquitoes at bay. We closed the door for the last time with heavy hearts – after a wonderful week in the heart of beautiful Tuscany. Thank you Anna and Vanessa.

Wonderful first holiday in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We will start by saying that even before we arrived here the friendliness and high levels of communication from Anna and Vanessa were exceptional. We had all the information we needed to get there, so we found the property easily. Anna and her team look after you very well.

The property itself is beautiful and is easily the best looked after apartment/villa we have rented over 25 years of family holidays. The attention to detail is first class. Whatever you think you might need from a holiday apartment, it's there. The apartment is large and as we were only 3 people we had lots of space. There are 2 very large bathrooms with really good showers, essential after a hot day out in the countryside.

The apartment is one of three in the property so there are other families around and the pool is shared but you do have your own allocated loungers/poolside area. Pool towels are also kindly provided.

The Arceno estate is very well situated in wonderful rolling Chianti countryside, any visitor will not be short of options for wine tasting with so many vineyards nearby.

Also nearby are many wonderful hilltop villages which we tended to explore in the mornings then come back for lunch on the patio before a cooling afternoon by the pool. Siena is also only 20 mins away by car so is easy for a day trip and more of a city experience. From Siena you can catch a train to Florence. Both cities are wonderful, if very hot compared to the Chianti hills which always seemed a few degrees cooler. We read a lot about "Chiantishire" before we left the UK and so we were a little concerned that it might be overrun by tourists but that is not the case at all in the area around the apartment.

Eating out options near the apartment are reasonably plentiful and range from Michelin star establishments to simple local cuisine. Castelnuovo Berardenga has several restaurants, we tried most of them and found the food to be pretty good with a good choice if not extensive menus. The restaurant hosts were in our experience very friendly. We would suggest that you book tables as occasionally places were full . The wine lists of course were fantastic! The other villages nearby all have at least one restaurant.

We have no hesitation in recommending this apartment for a family who wants to have a great location to explore the beauty of Tuscany.

Stunning setting outstanding accomodation.

  • 5 of 5

We have travelled in Italy many times and can safely say that this is the best accomodation we have ever had. Set in the stunning Arceno Vineyard this is simple an outstanding property and setting. The house was immaculately clean and has everything you could wish for in a holiday property. The pool is outstanding and although shared this was not an issue at all during our stay. This is a wonderful gem in the heart of Tuscany and one we would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Philip, you were fantastic guests, very enticed by the house and its settings and with a great sense of humour. No surprise you wrote such an outstanding review for which we thank you. We are only delighetd we could contribute to the success of your holidays. For next year we are planning on further enhancement of the property itself and on the step up of the "concierge" services we provide to our guests. So we shall be happy to welcome you back any time for an even more "stunning and outstanding" experience. Anna
