About the property

8 bedroom, 5 bath, to sleep 18, in hills 15 mins from beach

This rebuilt villa has all modern amenities. The grand entrance hall is overlooked by balconies of 2 upper floors. There is a pool room off the hall. The kitchen/dining is very large and you will find becomes the focus of activities when you are not lying by the swimming pool.

There are 3 double bedrooms (two with an additional single bed), 5 twins and a cot. 4 bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms. In addition there is a separate downstairs WC.

The large private pool (12x6 metres) is ideal for adults (2m deep end) and supervised children can enjoy the 3cm shallow end steps. In the evening, dinner can be enjoyed under the pergola overlooking the valley, next to the large barbecue area and the table tennis. There are extensive private forests/olive groves of 35 acres to explore. The immediate cultivated garden is surrounded by a high fence, so you can be sure your children don't wander far. The local shop (a few minutes walking distance) bakes fresh bread every day and has a bar attached where you will find only local residents.

Long term stays: Long term stays from the beginning of November through to end of March are available at greatly reduced rates (including the Christmas period) and please email me for further details.

About Jeremy Langshaw

I live in Kentish Town in London and always had a dream of retiring to Spain. When I was young my parents lived abroad - Indonesia, Nigeria, Trinidad - and I enjoy experiencing different places and cultures. Spain is near enough to access easily

from London but different enough to feel you are really aboad.

Jeremy Langshaw purchased this villa in 2003

Why Jeremy Langshaw chose Baix Penedes

I looked for a number of years for a property that would suit me and my family. We wanted something with plenty of space, both in the house and in the gardens around, but not so remote as to feel isolated. The family fell in love with the villa the first time we saw it - that was on a Tuesday and on the Friday we signed the contact

The development of the villa from completely run down farmhouse (with pigs in the living room and a tractor in the entrance hall!) to comfortable villa with all modern amenties and large pool was difficult at times - especially as we were living in London, could only visit occasionally and had limited Spanish. But now the work is done and the gardens have matured, it was all well worth the effort.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is both secluded and accessible. It is surrounded by its own forest of 35 acres - which guarantees nobody is going to build anything to block our views! At the same time it lies right on the edge of the village so you can still walk to the local bar and shop.

For me the best aspect is at the end of a hot day - maybe having gone to the beach or the nearby adventure park, played some table tennis or just caught up on some essential reading by the pool - to get a gin and tonic and sit at the side of the pool under the gazebo and watch the lights go up in the little villages scattered in the valley below....sigh.

A Great Holiday Paradise

  • 5 of 5

A brilliant and well maintained villa. Fantastic view over the forest. Great outdoor setting with a large swimming pool.

My husband and I celebrated our 30 years wedding anniversary in this beautiful villa with our daughter and 14 other family friends. We had a wonderful time and lots of great memories. Thank you Andreas for letting this super place to us in this very special occasion. We had so much laughter and fun during the 7 days we stayed. We shall definitely want to hire this place again.

Great property, fantastic location, very peaceful

  • 5 of 5

A stunning villa surrounded by its own land, fantastic views into the valley/plain loads of space, lovely rooms, great pool, BBQ and outdoor area, house is well equipped with everything you need and more. A nice quiet location but still central to lots of interesting towns and areas mountains, forests, beaches, are all there to explore. For a large group this is a perfect place. the bar just down the road is pretty good, like turning up at a Spanish version of our local social club!! The only thing I would say is that this is a fairly rural area so learn a bit of Spanish before you go, it'll make it so much more rewarding.

And again!

I stayed (again) in this beautiful masia to celebrate a very "big birthday" with family and friends. Several of us had been there before but the ones who hadn't were delighted with the accommodation and surroundings. A brilliant time was had by all. I am now going back with my granddaughter and more friends and family for another week. I truly lovely place.

Great villa in good location

  • 5 of 5

Our family group of 8 adults and 3 children had a fantastic two week stay at this villa in July 2012. There was room enough inside and outside to ensure that everyone from the youngest at 1 year old to the oldest could have a quiet space when required. As it stands in its own extensive and secure grounds set away from the rest of the village the villa is also very private.

The villa and facilities were all as described on the website; all rooms are spacious with comfortable beds and large en suite facilities. Thick walls and ceiling fans mean the villa stays cool even in July. The kitchen and dining areas are large and well equipped with dining space for at least 10-12. The excellent barbeque is safely placed away from the pool and play areas and is well equipped.

The large pool proved a particular hit as the children, aged from 1 to 12 years, all improved their swimming with long days and late evenings spent splashing around. It was large enough to accommodate children and adults. The games room is a great place for young and old to chill out.

The community centre, 10 minutes walk from the villa proved an excellent place to enjoy Spain's victory in the EURO 2012 finals; party time and fireworks for all although if you have a UK view of health and safety perspective perhaps it's best to avoid being close to Spanish celebrations! At any time of the day the bar in the centre will provide low priced drinks and a very warm welcome.

There are lots of opportunities for easy day trips from the villa. Top marks from us go to Tarragona with its Roman Amphitheatre and magnificent Roman Aqueduct; we also enjoyed Santes Creus monastery and Freixenet cava tour but a our biggest surprise was to discover that the town of Reus is much more than an airport for cheap flights. Visit the magnificent Gaudi centre in this his home town to learn more about his genius and inspirations and to discover some fine restaurants. A slightly longer trip will take you to the beautiful Cathedral in Lleida; take the tour and return to the cathedral bar in the evening for some tapas and fantastic night views.

We liked the nearby beach at Coma-Ruga which is quiet and very family friendly if you need to feel the sea and sand between your toes.

We have no hesitation in recommending this villa; for larger parties it is excellent value for money (note we had one bedroom and four single beds not used)

My family of 10 rented this villa over the Easter weekend. We arrived to find no heating and little hot water. We had to call the local contact to turn on the heat, which still malfunctioned, requiring space heaters to be put in the bedrooms. Two days into our 4 day stay, the repairman arrived to fix the heat and solar hot water heater. In spite of this, there was stiil no heat in parts of the house, including the living room, which was unusable at any time. There was still insufficient hot water. There was no operating cable TV in the living room, nor did the advertised telephone exist ( the owner says he neglected to delete it from the website, even though it is advertised to this day ), requiring us to make costly local calls on our cell phones. The grounds were poorly tended with assorted pieces of equipment lying around. When we contacted the owner in England, he blamed the unseasonably cold weather, although it was obvious no preparations had been made for our arrival regardless.

Our rental contract stipulated a refund of up to 100% for any deficiencies not corrected within 24 hours. The owner refused to offer us reasonable compensation for what was a very uncomfortable stay. He cited the weather, the fact that the villa was not profitable and so on, none of which were relevant to the issue of livability.

We were never able to locate the bakery supposedly nearby and there was no nearby tavern of note as had been claimed. It is a 15 to 20 minute drive to grocery shopping although the supermarkets were well stocked.

On the plus side, the kitchen and eating area was spacious and reasonably well-equipped.

While perhaps the foregoing deficiencies might not be important during the summer, we found the obvious lack of concern for our comfort distressing. Since the owner is not on site, there is really no recourse.

We rented two other facilities during the same visit to Spain and, in each instance, the residence was comfortable with all advertised amenities. I regret that such was not our experience with this villa and I would in no way be able to recommend it.

Owner's Response: I am sorry these guests did not enjoy the villa. The weather was unseasonably cold and although I did everything I could to make these guests happy, including distributing individual heaters, it seems nothing I could do would make them happy. As the reviewer says I offer UP TO 100% refund if the matters are not rectified within 24 hours and it seems the villa took a bit longer to warm up so I gave back 50% for the 2 days they were unhappy. I have learnt a lesson however and in future if the weather is poor I will arrange for the local housekeeper to go in and make sure the wood fired burners are stoked up a couple of days in advance. Obviously in the summer the cooling ceiling fans are more important. But for anyone thinking of going off season however, as mentioned in the body of the advert, the villa is very large and airy and it is impossible in the cooler months to make it warm and toastie.

The garden yields much edible produce depending on the season - lemons, mezbilla (a bit like a cross between an apple and a peach), figs and a wide variety of herbs. Don't try the olives though as they cant be eaten straight from the tree!!
