Overview

About the property

A well-appointed, beautifully-sited haven for Green Mtn play & deep relaxation.

This enchanting home offers a base for all the active delights the Green Mountains have to offer -- skiing, hiking, biking, fly-fishing, kayaking, tubing, swimming and more. And for those who just need a break, it's a house you're delighted to stay home in. This is a well-renovated, caringly decorated, and well-appointed home with stunning and peaceful spot for walks, dining al fresco, hammock time, or just taking in the view.

A delightful getaway for couples, but large (>1800 sq ft) and kid-friendly enough for 2 families -- the home has been renovated and outfitted with both in mind. We have worked to retain the wonderful character of this 1810 farmhouse -- the first home built in the "Hollows" -- while making some key updates for comfort and convenience.

A vibrant, comfortable living room hosts a piano, abundant books, games, puzzles, bluetooth speaker, and a turn table. Dust off your vinyl bring it North! The dining room table seats 8, with an additional table for overflow. The kitchen is newly updated and very well-equipped. One large bathroom downstairs and 2 smaller ones on the second floor. A delightful screen porch for morning coffee and afternoon naps opens onto a newly installed pea stone patio, embanked by perennial plantings. In the barn, a gameroom offers ping-pong, foosball, darts, giant jenga and more during the milder months.

The 3 acre property hosts a year-round stream (with little native trout), a small pond, abundant wildlife and nesting birds, paths that meander through wildflower meadows teeming with butterflies, and dazzling sunsets over the Green Mountains.

With Killington 30 minutes to the South, Sugarbush 25 minutes to the North, and Middlebury Snowbowl 20 minutes West, this is a prime location for downhill skiiers. And for cross-country skiiers and snowshoers, there is a beautiful loop trail just 1/2 mile away, and many trails in the area, including groomed trails in the Green Mountains, a short drive from the house.

The area is popular with cyclists of all stripes. A long-time road- and mountain-biking destination, it is also gaining a reputation for its "gravel" (dirt-road) biking. The nearby White River offers tubing adventures and pristine swimming holes. And hiking abounds, right from the door and from trails in the Green Mountain National Forest, just 10 minutes down the road.

Just down the road is charming Rochester village with its excellent food and cultural activities. And just down the road are key attractions like Warren Falls and the Long Trail, and towns to explore like Waitsfield and Middlebury.

Available for your use are:

* River tubes and electric pump for 6 people ().

* Assorted yard games, including croquet, cornhole/bean bag toss, and volleyball.

* Assorted cross-country skis.

* Bicycles suitable for ages 5-7 and 8-10, as well as assorted adult bikes (but this changes so check before booking if this is a priority).

About The Owner

We are parents of three kids -- two teens girls and their younger brother. Zig is a guitar-strumming, hammer-wielding, high school history teacher. Erika works on climate change, generating and communicating new science on how it may impact our lives and how we can respond. We both fell hard for the pastoral beauty of the Hollows, and have been in love with the area since Day 1. And we both love old New England homes and barns and take great joy in renovating and caring for this one. It's a pleasure to share it with others.

Hidden gem. What a gift!

  • 5 of 5

Four moms and five kids came to stay with our two cellos, five violins, and two violas. This lovingly modernized historical farm house was the perfect place for us. Like Harry Potter's magically charmed tent, there was all that one would expect and more. Great views of the mountains, newts in the pond, JT on vinyl, Whistler on the book shelf, foosbal madness, easy commute to a swim at Peavine or a chai tea at Sandy's in Rochester, and a respectful little write up of the history of the original family who built the place. Clean and comfortable, charming and stylish. Plenty of space to gather for meals and games and music and also quiet and private enough bedroom space when rest and relaxation called. So grateful to the owners of this place--for seeing the value in preserving and maintaining this gem of a home, doing it so well and for opening it up to share with all of us who stumble upon it. Thanks to you and yours Erika!

Relaxing home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and children ages 12 and 6 just stayed here for a week and had a wonderful time. It is evident how much thought and consideration went into this property to make it welcoming for guests. Having young kids we wondered how no "tv" would go over and were pleasantly surprised, a few movies were watched but the kids had way more fun playing in the pond and even said they didn't miss it! We had everything we needed to keep us entertained when weather was rainy.

Location was perfect, only a few minutes to town for necessities, and loved the coffee shop and cafe. We loved only being a short distance to hiking trails and fishing and even took a day trip to Middlebury and Montpelier so the location was absolutely perfect! We hope to return someday and do it all over again!

Wonderful Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this pristine and precious property. The serene setting was perfect for our family retreat. We read books, listened to records (!), and generally relaxed. The game room was an exciting and an unexpected treat for multi-generational ping pong competitions. June in central Vermont is not to be missed. Thank you to our gracious hostess for this opportunity.

Warm and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

A cosy old house that oozes character, this place is as tranquil as it gets, with plenty of land and open views. It's an easy drive to Rochester, where there's a pretty good (if old-fashioned) supermarket, and is a great base for a family holiday.
