Sun, sea and lemon trees

  • 5 of 5

We (2 families) stayed for ten days in the beautiful Limone and Mandarino villas and it was a wonderful vacation.

The views form the terraces (both the main one and also the one from the first floor) were breathtaking, especially on sunrise. Add to that the sound of the waves and you could say you're pretty close to paradise. The house is quiet, with plenty of light (the living room of villa Limone has three large doors that open to the terrace on two sides of the room) and well equipped (including two barbecues which we quite used). The villas are placed in an idilic lemon and mandarin trees orchard. The access to the pebbled beach is easy.

The villas curator, Rosario, is very friendly and his advices about the restaurants and shopping options in the area were extremely useful! It's a very convenient location to visit Etna but we also added Taormina, Noto and Siracuse to our trips in the region.

All in one, a vacation to remember!

Just two more remarks: do not expect luxury but rustic and be prepared for the tinyest and yet the most active (only at sunset) mosquitoes :)

Lovely old country house

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. House is very comfortable, clean and well equipped (we rented both units Casa Limone and Casa Mandarino). The view is fantastic and the patios large so you can move around to avoid sun and wind. The care taker Mr. Rosario was great and went out of his way to help us get settled in the first day, he even guided us on his motorcycle to the nearest shops and to a supermarket which was 20 minutes away. The only slightly negative aspect, and why I am giving this 4 out of 5 stars, is the long drive in to the house on a very rough country lane.

A lovely secluded property: strongly recommended

  • 5 of 5

You have to drive for maybe half a kilometre through a lemon grove to reach this house, with views of Etna behind you. Delightful. But you must have a car.

The house itself is basic; if you want luxury, then probably look elsewhere. But it is clean and well-maintained, and was just right for us (two adults, two teenagers). We very much enjoyed breakfast on the balcony overlooking the sea - you have a good view along the coast perhaps as far as Taormina. You can get down to the beach very easily. The beach itself is rocky and good for an evening stroll, but we didn't swim.

The owner was extremely kind and helpful, even though we arrived four hours late.

The local village (about 10 minutes drive) has nice shops, including a bakery and fruit/veg shop, and there is a huge supermarket about 15/20 minutes drive away. After the first day, we just used the local shops, with very friendly staff.

We could happily have relaxed in the property for most of the week, but instead we made various excursions to temples and volcanoes.

In all, a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you and yes: the view along the coast is as far as Taormina. And sometimes you can see even the coast of Calabria, in front.

Juillet 2011 - Famille de 5 personnes

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Praiola
Car: necessary

Praiola is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. The place lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just 7 kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches).

Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 20 kilometres from Praiola. Next to is is Taormina, ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’, with the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek-Roman theatre is world famous for its stunning views.

Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Praiola and renown for their fish restaurants. At 2 Kms from the house is Carruba, a tiny village with a few shops and a square.

Other Activities: Excursions to Mount Etna, the biggest volcano of Europa or the lively city of Catania.
