About the property

Comfortable house in charming Cairanne. Spacious, stylish, private.

This is a lovely and very private old property with wonderful views looking over some of the fine vineyards of the Cotes de Rhone. It has central heating and a huge fireplace so it is comfortable at all times of year. The house sleeps six and has 3 bathrooms. The property is a good combination of great location, lots of outdoor space and comfortable, pretty interiors. The countryside around the house is dotted with great vineyards for wine tastings and the possibility of wonderful walks in the vineyards and in the local Dentelles mountains. The house is surrounded by hedges that ensure privacy. It has its own large swimming pool and four terraces, In summer there is sun until late in the evening, so you can sit by the pool while enjoying the sublime views in the evening sun. Thanks to high spec sunbeds, a hammock, an outdoor oven and a variety of sitting areas, you can live outdoors in high summer.

In Cairanne there is a well-stocked general store and a good restaurant as well as a cooperative selling excellent local wines. There is a market every day in the area, including some of the most famous in Provence. There is much to enjoy in the area as well as cultural festivals in Arles, Aix en Provence and Avignon, impressive Roman ruins in Orange and Vaison la Romaine, and great vineyards nearby. (Rasteau, Vacqueras, Gigondas). The countryside to the North in the Drome is magical to explore.

Where we are: The property is close to the major attractions of Provence in the Southern Cotes de Rhone region. Orange is 20 minutes away, Vaison la Romaine 15 minutes. L'Isle sur Sorgue 25 mins, Avignon (TGV) 30 mins, Nimes (Airport) 55 mins, St Remy de Provence 45 min, Marseille airport 75 mins.

The village: Cairanne is situated between Ste Cecile des Vignes and Vaison la Romaine. The house is in the old village on the hill (pop 80) while the new village (pop 850) is a five minute stroll from the house down the hill. The 'new' village has an attractive square, bakery, grocery store, a restaurant and cafe. The houses in the peaceful old village date mostly from the 18th century but the ramparts date back to the 12th century when the Knights of Templar built these fortifications. The Maison d'Emma was originally three small dwellings that have been knocked into one generously sized house with ample outside space.

The area: The region has many cultural attractions from the famous summer festivals at Avignon, Vaison la Romaine (choral), Orange (opera) and Aix en Provence as well as the gypsy festivals at Nimes and Arles. All the local villages have an annual 'Fete de vins', there are concerts in some of the vineyards and a local writers' festival. Although close to some major towns (and their wonderful markets and large supermarkets) Cairanne is in deep country. There are wonderful local walks in the vineyards or in the hills of the nearby Dentelles de Montmirail. Mont Ventoux is half an hour away.

About Emma Soames

I've always loved this area of France and when I saw this house, I was smitten before I'd even opened the front door. Over the past five years I have been improving it as well as greatly enjoying just spending time there.

Emma Soames purchased this house in 2008

Why Emma Soames chose Haut-Vaucluse

The house is in a great location in Northern Provence and Cairanne is just beginning to become fashionable thanks to its setting among the vineyards and its easy access to the big Romanesque Provencale towns as well as the Camargue and Nimes.

What makes this house unique

Just look at the reviews ! I have created a thoughtfully equipped holiday house with great beds, a huge fireplace, a well equipped kitchen and lots of sunloungers for high summer. Other times of year equally enchanting for walking and exploring and you can eat outside pretty much all year round if the weather is good.

Wonderful panoramic views, excellent beds and quality sheets.first class bathrooms.(except for ground floor bedroom).A spectacular pool, unheated, so early May weather(plus Mistral) too cool for swimming !

Charming old Provencal house , garden on several levels with many Iris and Roses in full bloom.

Quiet village with good value bistro, and friendly all purpose shop.

Vines everywhere and numerous opportunities for Degustation.

A Little Jewel

  • 5 of 5

This was an absolutely beautiful, restful place. Our Western Canadian family of 6, including my 4 year old granddaughter, enjoyed everything about it during our month-long stay. We felt very welcome everywhere we went in Cairanne or Cairana, as the locals call it. The views from the house were breathtaking and the skyscapes were ever-changing. This private hill-top house was our base for exploring the surrounding villages with our rented Renault van. Vaison-la-Romaine, Séguret, Isle Sur La Sorgue , further out, Gordes, Roussillon etc. are all must sees. The bigger towns Avignon, Orange, Aix -En- Provence and others are an easy drive away. I loved the quiet, unpretentious old character of this place and would love to return, even to just say "Bonjour, mes amis!"

Fabulous French home

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful - totally charming and completely comfortable. It is obviously a very old building but has been very well maintained and includes all the mod-cons necessary for making life easy on holiday! The bedrooms were all wonderfully done and very comfortable - lovely sheets! The kitchen is very well equipped as well.

As we stayed in winter we spent a lot of time relaxing in the sitting room in front of the enormous fireplace - it was very comfortable and the fire kept us all warm and cosy.

The property was clean, well-mainted and generally easy to use and live in, and the listing desctiption was accurate. We particularly like d the excellent value and really very good restuarnat int eh village.

The views are the piece de resistance though. Really spectacular - the sunsets especially so. I can only imagine what these are like in summer time and we are so keen to see them we will be coming back for a summer holiday very soon! Highly recommended.

A stunning house with the most beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

Although most people seem to flock to the South of France in the summer, I have always preferred going there in the late spring - May is perfect - when there are no crowds and the countryside is fresh and green and full of wild flowers. Which is just what I did earlier this year. Emma's delightful house is perched at the very top of a lovely medieval village with the most stunning views. The house itself could not be more comfortable. I had just come from staying at La Colombe d'Or hotel in St Paul de Vence which happens to be my favorite hotel in the entire world, but have to report that Emma's heavenly beds and crisp linens and downy pillows put the Colombe to shame. Never, ever have I slept so well. Being three very old village houses turned into one, its great charm is its layout, up and down and all around with not a depressing right angle in sight! The garden sprawls over several levels too, with little secret corners and terraces if you feel like hiding away. The living room has the most magnificent enormous 17th century stone fireplace, my bedroom opened onto another terrace and you can lie in the bath and look out over the gorgeous countryside. Needless to say the entire house was spotless, the garden beautifully maintained. If you feel like a little adventure I'd suggest going to another medieval village with the wonderful name of Le Poet-Laval where you will want to have lunch outside at the Chateau des Hospitaliers. Delicious food, local wine in the most romantic setting you could possibly imagine. If your are more of a culture vulture, then you need to head straight for Orange and its magnificent Roman theater which is still used for musical and theatrical events. There's also an amazing outdoor food market there.

I can't recommend this house more highly, it really lived up to my expectations - and then some. So great to be in a place that is slightly off the beaten track, no crowds, no noise, just pure unadulterated peace, quiet and beauty. Heaven!

Maison au charme absolu

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful house with stunning views. The house itself is full of character and completely charming but clean and well-appointed: all the usual mod-cons. The listing description is accurate re. location, layout and facilities. There is good local information provided at the house, and we loved the restaurant in the village which has delicious food at very good prices.

All the local villages are wonderfully unspoilt. We particularly liked the market at St Cecile (next door village) and the local Caves are a real treat for any wine lover. You do need a car (public transport is non-existent).

All in all a wonderful holiday in a fantastic house. We will definitely be back. Thank you very much!
