About the property

One of a kind, remodeled and furnished to exacting standards. An amazing home.

This totally remodeled Colonial home has everything you are looking for…and much, much more. The location is superb: on a quiet street and yet right around the corner from Santa Ana with its market, eateries, crafts, art galleries and weekly special events. The famous Paseo de Montejo is only two blocks away. The Canton Palace which houses Merida’s huge anthropology museum is nearby, and the Plaza Grande is an easy walk of 7 blocks.

This is one of the few three bedroom houses on Merida’s rental market, and here each has its own full bath. The floor plan of Casa Maclobia is designed to maximize the indoor/outdoor living Merida is famous for with views of pool, garden or rooftop from every room. This is the perfect house for a family or a group of friends, with lots of spaces to gather together for meals or conversation, but also with many cozy niches just right for one or two.

Everything has been lovingly thought out by the owner to maximize his guest’s enjoyment of this fabulous home. From the “man-cave” TV room to the more formal sitting area in front of the pool; from the peaceful garden to the yoga/meditation terrace; from the covered rooftop dining/entertainment space to the palapa-topped private master suite, there is something here for everyone.

Naturally all of the following are included:

First quality linens

Pool with fountain

Shady garden

Outdoor shower

Palapa bedroom

Master bath with shower and tub

High class living in the center of Merida

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to Merida, Mexico before, but our son had completed a summer exchange program in the City and told us how great the Centro area of Merida was for walking, restaurants and parks. We also were going have seven people from two different families on our trip so we needed a little space. Casa Maclobia turned out to not only meet all of our expectations, but greatly exceeded them.

There were plenty of sleeping spaces spread out throughout the house, giving everyone privacy and quiet when they wanted it. Our son even spent part of the week sleeping outside in a patio/garden area. The beds were comfortable and the bedding worked well with extras stashed around the house.

The kitchen was well stocked with cooking supplies and even some of the staples available for use (sugar/salt/spices/etc.). We only cooked at home for one dinner but we ate breakfast in the house every day. The dishwasher and full-sized fridge/freezer made everything easy and convenient.

The best thing about the house is the indoor/outdoor living setup. While the bedrooms and bathrooms were each enclosed, the other main rooms are covered, but open to the outside. For people from the frigid Midwest, being able to sit on the couch, or at the dinner table and look at the uninterrupted pool views and feel the warm air, this was the best arrangement possible. The house is designed beautifully and looks lovely either in the day or at night. Further, you can use the roof top level either for getting some sun in the day, or for taking in the city lights at night.

In terms of location, it is hard to do better. Parque Santa Ana is right around the corner with one of the best little restaurants in the city, Manjar Blanco. It is also right in the middle of an arts district with lots of nice art studios. The museums of the Paseo Montejo is only steps away, while the Plaza Independencia (the main downtown square) is an easy 10 to 15 minute walk. The streets are safe and easy to navigate.

Finally, the staff was extremely friendly and easy to work with. They spoke English and took care of all of our concerns.

Overall, we would heartily recommend staying in this house. We can’t wait to go back again.

Open air home just 15 minutes from Centro

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 LOVED staying here the month of April!

This home is unquestionably beautiful! I wish I had these beds in my own home and the bathrooms were gorgeous. I cook quite a bit and found that the kitchen had everything I needed to make any meal I wanted. Nice big counter tops with a HUGE island for prepping. Perhaps a better chefs knife (or knife sharpener) would be handy, but I'm guessing that most people that stay here don't cook as much as I do. We were a family of 6, so the fridge was bit small so we used the mini fridge up on the terrace level too. Really, those were minor things. Any issue that arose with the home, was dealt with promptly. The property managers were great.

Now, the following is not necessarily a negative but I wanted to make note of it, so people could consider it. The home is open air, so there is quite a bit of dirt/leaves that comes in and so it gets kind of yucky to walk barefoot through the living area and pool area. We typically washed our feet often. Maid service is twice a week, so that was very helpful. When the temperatures reached over 100 and I was cooking in the kitchen, it got hot and sweaty! If there is no cooking going on, it was fine with the fans going. If you love having air conditioning all summer, this house is not for you, as the main area (kitchen/dining/room off the pool area) are all open. There is air conditioning in the 3 bedrooms. The 2 bedrooms stayed cool during the day even though we only ran air conditioning at night time. The 3rd bedroom, upstairs, with the palapa roof had an air conditioning unit BUT it is open air, so I didn't run it. I think I may have run it twice when the room got too hot but as soon as it shuts off, the room gets hot. You are essentially blowing cold air in the room, but since you are essentially outside.... Also there were a few nights were I absolutely needed ear plugs because of different music coming from outside. The downstairs rooms were very quiet and you couldn't hear a thing.

The pool was great- very refreshing.

Can be difficult to find parking on the street, but it's possible.

While families can stay here, I was asked to increase my security deposit to $1000 because I had children and the owner has expensive items. I didn't have a problem with this, but it made me nervous about being there. For this reason I would look somewhere else if I were to return.

Electricity for 24 days was $188. I was conscientious about conserving energ
