When we decided to build out our basement apartment, we set out to make it something we'd like to stay in ourselves. We knew we wanted high end finishings, heated tile floor in bathroom, comfortable furniture, full size kitchen and appliances. We knew we wanted our family, friends and guests to feel at home. We succeeded. The apartment is spacious, bright and open.

You'll enjoy your own private entrance to the apartment including a nice terrace patio out front for your enjoyment.

The first thing you'll notice when you enter the apartment is how open it is and how much usable space is there for you. Next you will begin to notice the modern finishings and furnishings. The living area is large with lots a space to spread out and watch shows on the large flat screen cable TV. Prepare meals in the full-size kitchen or just sit and enjoy your morning coffee at the granite breakfast bar.

Entering the bedroom via pocket doors you'll find an wildly comfortable and adjustable queen size bed and able storage space in the dressers and walk-in closet. The bedroom also boasts a flat screen TV with cable.

The en suite bath is bright and fully appointed complete with heated floors, two shower heads, natural stone and ceramic inlaid tiles.

Of course, as with many basement apartments, the 7' ceiling heights are slightly lower than that of upper floors, but even at 6'3" this owner has plenty of headroom to spare.

NOTE ON NUMBER OF GUESTS: Though the listing states we can accommodate up to 3 guests, the sofa is not a sleeper sofa. Linens are provided to outfit the sofa for sleeping.

As your hosts, we'll provide you the best service possible with as much privacy as you'd like. We can certainly help you with any questions you have about the neighborhood, DC in general.

We're perfectly situation between two Red Line Metro Stations (Union Station and NOMA), each just a few blocks away. Also the new DC Streetcar running the length of H Street from Union Station to 26th Street is available free-of-charge (this will change in the coming year).

Why Darin & Carl chose Near Northeast

It's a beautiful place, centrally located and the hosts are great! Biased, yes.

The home is in a constant state of improvements. We embarked on transforming this space from a completely unfinished basement to the gem it is now.

What makes this apartment unique

Having your own entrance is typical in Capitol Hill, but having your own patio space is pretty rare.

Also, we didn't finish the unit "on the cheap." Rather, we took to the time to make it as comfortable as possible for our visiting family which we have many. So it's a home away from home for family and we hope you'll feel that way too.

We're in the middle of everything that DC has to offer...from the sites/sounds of the H Street Corridor to sightseeing along the National Mall to theatre events at The Kennedy Center or Howard Theatre. Really there's too much to do.

We prefer to take the Metro or Uber for attractions nearby. But there's really no reason to have a car while staying here.

Our stay was everything we hoped for and more!

Landlord was very welcoming and the accommodations were perfect. Well stocked kithen with everything you need to settle in and wake up with a hot cup of coffee. We even had a fridge stocked with necessities until we could visit the market. 5 min walk from Union Station and close to Capitol hall and museums. A must stay again!!

Comfortable and Accommodating

The 5th Street Retreat provided a very comfortable place to refresh and regroup after a long day of visiting the Capital, the National Mall, museums and other features of our nation's capital. It's about a 15 minute walk to Union Station, and with a little practice, we were able to "master" the Metro transportation system. Groceries, restaurants and coffee shops were within walking distance, and we prepared some meals for ourselves while dining out when we wanted. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating, and we enjoyed all aspects of our visit to DC.

Great Location/Well Appointed

This basement one bedroom is very well done. The space is ample, the furniture and bedding is comfortable, the bathroom and kitchen are very nice. The location is conveniently a short walk to Union Station as a jump point on the Metro to access all areas. We lived off the Whole Foods market right around the corner, but there are places to eat within walking distance. The owners, Carl and Darin, are great people, and super accommodating to make your stay as pleasant as possible. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again?!

Fantastic!

The 5th street retreat was just that, a lovely space to relax after a hard days sight seeing, comes with all cooking utensils, and a very comfortable bed. The hosts are very welcoming and checked in on us throughout our visit, would highly recommend!

Everything Outstanding

Wonderful basement apartment with absolutely great hosts, close to transportation, and convenient to shopping to stock food as needed (Whole Foods right nearby) and also coffee from Starbucks to a few local coffee houses very close as well. Apartment is extremely well appointed with everything you'll need, great high speed wifi, two big flatscreens, one in bedroom one in living room which will satisfy even the most avid tv watcher, which my wife and I are....and keep the peace when you want to watch different programs!

The apartment is so nice that you have to tear yourself away from it to go and fulfill the purpose of your trip, which in our case was a couple of family events and also a bit of typical tourist activity. We loved coming back to it after a long day, brewing up some hot tea and getting some great rest on the bed that was super comfortable and matched our home setup in terms of stiffness. Kitchen is great, with every feature you can think , though we did not do any serious cooking.

If we get back to DC, and it is available, we 'l definitely stay here again.

Loved our stay at Carl & Darin's place'

Apartment was roomy and very well furnished with everything you need for a few days or weeks. Loved the very nice linens & towels as well as the comfortable furniture in the living room. Too often rentals are furnished with a cheap, modern, uncomfortable sofa & chair, whereas Carl & Darin put a comfortable sofa & two very nice easy chairs in their place. Location was excellent, near transportation, grocery stores, and restaurants. We loved the nearby H Street trolley which we took to Union Station, where we caught the Circulator bus that takes you to the National Mall, etc. Uber is also very responsive. They got us a parking pass so we had little trouble parking near the apartment. We took our car to Old Alexandria, with it's many bars & restaurants, especially The Chart House. Both Carl & Darin were very helpful with suggestions and left goodies for us to eat & drink. My husband is 6'2" and didn't even notice the lower ceilings. Would recommend this to couples as well as family with one child. Thanks, Guys!!
