Secluded one bedroom in the Black Hills

Granny Flats is an off-grid home hand-crafted by a gifted artist in Spearfish, SD. Refresh your senses surrounded by natural materials, being warmed by a wood stove in the winter or cooled by the creek in the summer.

Granny Flats is within the city limits, with the bike path just across the park, but it is also well off the road so you can enjoy peace and some seclusion.

Granny Flats provides the modern creature comforts while minimizing our environmental footprint. The house boasts wifi, a king bed, large two-headed shower, big kitchen, and carport. It sits on 3-acres that is yours to enjoy, with a wood-fired sauna, freshwater creek with dipping pool and deck, outdoor cooking space, a hammock, and a trampoline. You can also look forward to fresh eggs and produce from the organic garden, if you are lucky enough to be here during the late summer and fall.

Toy haulers, trailers, or full-sized trucks are welcome, and there is plenty of room to park and turn around.

About the house:

The house is an load-bearing straw-bale structure, with an earthen floor. The solar system is 3 Kw with 12 deep cycle batteries. It has a greywater system for the sinks and a composting toilet.

Cappie grew up in Spearfish, traveled the world, and then returned to take over Grandpa Swisher's homestead in 2009. Rachel moved to Spearfish in 2008. Cappie owns a natural building company in Spearfish, Pangea Design Group. Rachel owns a business consulting company that specializes in project management.

Off-Grid yet comfortable and cozy. Perfect for a couple's getaway but still had enough room to host dinner for 13. Beautiful and unique design inside and out.

Amazing unique home

We only stayed one night and wish we could have stayed longer. The home is unique and the owner is considerate and very accommodating. Communication was amazing. This is a beautiful location and the home is perfect. It has a wonderful shower, full kitchen and a very nice king sized bed. Don't let the composting toilet scare you!! Dont stay in a hotel when you can stay there and re charge your batteries.

Comfortable, Sustainable, and Aesthetically Pleasing!

We visited family in Spearfish for Thanksgiving and thoroughly enjoyed our off-the-grid sanctuary. We loved the location in Granny Flats. It is a short walk to Black Hills State University and Main Street, but with privacy and a homestead feel near Spearfish Creek. This is a well-built straw bale house with artistic touches that promote a healthy living space. We will definitely stay here again!
