About Alex & Robin Ocheltree

University of Wyoming B.A. History 1976, Musician, Artist, Master Carpenter/cabinetmaker, welder, machinist, electrician..

"Jack of all trades, master of one, better than a master of none"

Married to Robin for 30 years! She also graduated from University of Wyoming, in 1980, with a B.S. in Speech pathology and audiology.

Alex & Robin Ocheltree purchased this chateau / country house in 1961

Why Alex & Robin Ocheltree chose Gila

My family found the L.C. in 1961 in near ruins. My father was a retired Grand Opera singer looking for that special place. My mother, Bonnie, was an artist and historian looking for an old colonial Spanish hacienda to restore and decorate. In the L.C. we found much more, for it had not only a Spanish colonial hacienda, but a Victorian ranch house, and the outbuildings of a complete old west ranch headquarters including a store, saloon, jail, sheriff's office, theatre, and chapel.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

There is simply no place like it. It defies description. It is enormous, rich in history, built and designed to entertain Tom Lyons wealthy friends while functioning as the heart of a million acre cattle empire. The Spanish Hacienda is simply the oldest European structure west of the Rio Grande other than the Spanish Missions of the same era.

Notes:
An excerpt from "THE CATTLEMAN'S EMPIRE" a publication of the National Park Service. "The L.C. completely overshadowed all other ranching operations in Southwest New Mexico. It was one of the truly great ranches of the West—at its height in the 1890's controlling a million-acre range carrying 60,000 head. Tom Lyons, baron of the upper Gila, carved a kingdom out of mountain, plain and desert, and left for posterity a ranch house and headquarters complex that overshadows all other surviving historic ranch establishments in the Southwest."

The Gate House is part of the Lyons & Campbell Ranch headquarters, a large historic complex which includes an old West Saloon, theatre, Jail, Pool and lanai, and the 27 room adobe mansion of Cattle Baron Tom Lyons. A New Mexico Historic Site, National Registry of Historic Places and in nomination for a National Historic Landmark. A Destination in itself, the L.C. Ranch Headquarters is reason enough to visit, or use it as a base to explore the surrounding area, including historic Pinos Altos, Silver City and the Gila-Cliff Dwellings. The beautiful and picturesque Gila Valley sits at the base of the Mighty Mogollon Mountains and its 11,000 foot peaks. Three million acres of National Forest surround us, with the million acre Gila Wilderness just to the north. Hiking, Biking, Bird-watching, river rafting or tubing, are all part of the attraction, along with gallery hopping in Silver City, or exploring the area on its scenic highways or off-roading in the nearby Burro Mountains.
