BEACH HEAVEN*

* No folks this is not a typo or a misprint! A wonderful family with four children who joined us for two weeks at Shore Haven House in 2003 returned for another two weeks in 2005 as the children insisted that they had to come back to "Shore Heaven" (the kids' secret name for their favourite holiday home).

Brookside cottage at "Shore Heaven" offers the opportunity for the vacation of a lifetime. Absorb the sights & sounds of the Atlantic ocean & the beach. It's a peaceful private sanctuary on the Atlantic ocean, with all modern conveniences, breathtaking views, a private beachfront where you can swim in the mellow salt water, explore tidal pools, surround yourself with the experience of the ocean sounds of surf, walk for miles on the sculpted sand beach, or enjoy pastoral fields, and wooded and brookside walkways.

Brookside beach front cottage is far from the hustle and bustle of city life; and yet it's still close to all that the city offers, if you choose.

WHAT A SPECTACULAR LOCATION!!

SO MANY ACTIVITIES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

The immediate area also offers many interesting activities. The beaches, villages and rich farmland of the spectacular “Noel Shore” are just moments away. Experience a step back in time with the warm hospitality, unique shops, antiques, artisans, crafts, farm markets, quilts and hand hooked rugs, preserves, quality "new-to-you" clothing, fishing wharves, restaurants (from down-home to gourmet dining), historic churches and museums of seaside villages such as Newport Landing, Sommerville, Noel, and Maitland or the pastoral beauty in the traditional Mennonite community in West Northfield.

Visitors are welcome at the many local attractions.

A great destination for a bike ride or a short drive, a fully serviced picnic park with stairs and a viewing platform is available close by at beautiful Burntcoat Head Park and Interpretation Center, site of the world's highest recorded tides. The highest, ever tide was recorded here in 1896 and reached the astounding height of 64.9 feet! Don't miss the excellent museum located in a restored lighthouse, a great place to learn more about the world's highest tides and local history.

Maitland Village, designated Nova Scotia's first Heritage Conservation District with nearly 50 beautiful 19th century homes is an historic shipbuilding village and the home of the world's largest sailing vessel which is chronicled at the Lawrence House museum. Maitland is also home to Riverview Herbs and Bing's Eatery. There are other local museums such as in Selma and at the authentic lighthouse in Walton.

Guests may wish to experience the thrill of the world’s highest tides, “up close and personal”, by going rafting on the tidal bore with the Shubenacadie River Runners in Maitland. Some of the many other local attractions include The Walton Lighthouse and park, (just down the road, original lighthouse restored) , the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park with its stunning new marshland and bird-viewing walk, Mastodon Ridge Museum, a fossil display and life-size replica of an 89,000 year old mastodon whose bones were found in this area, golf, eco-tourism and good local restaurants (including gourmet dining at the Flying Apron Cookery in Summerville). Horseback riding & riding lessons are available at nearby locations. Sea kayaking, guided expeditions including an eagle tour, and outfitters are also available close by in Maitland. Only 15 minutes away at Walton play golf all day on a links course by the sea, Minas View Links, for $20 Canadian. The links at Penn Hills is an excellent course designed by Les Furber, 30 minutes away on the banks of the spectacular Shubenacadie River.

There are good country inn/restaurants and family style restaurants in the nearby villages. We particularly recommend the food, the views and the charming ambiance of the Café at Newport Landing, lunch or dinner at Bing’s Eatery in Maitland and the Sunday Brunch at the Flying Apron in Summerville. There are also good restaurants in Windsor, the gateway to the Annapolis Valley, about 45 minutes away. Windsor has other attractions such as the world famous Mermaid Theatre, Haliburton House, a gorgeous restored historic house and home of "Sam Slick". At Wolfville, enjoy superb fine dining restaurants and the bounty of the Valley farms at the many farm markets and on the edge of town Grand Pre and the trail of Evangeline as well as winery tours. Travel a little further along the Annapolis Valley and enjoy the vistas of golf courses, orchards, farms, vineyards as well as winery tours, whale watching, and the unique lobster dinners on the wharf at Hall's Harbour.

Nova Scotia is rich in traditional music. In addition to concerts and festivals there are weekly jam sessions along this shore; a very fine one is held on Wednesdays at the Flying Apron and another at Bramber Village Hall on Thursdays as well as Friday evenings at near-by Minasville Hall.

All of this is only 1 hour from Halifax with the world's second deepest natural harbour, a cosmopolitan center, with a wide array of restaurants, world class museums and shopping.

Brookside Cottage by the Sea is so far from the hustle and bustle of city life and yet are still close to all that the city has to offer, if you choose.

Why Carol Sifton/Sandy Munroe chose Tennycape

Spectacular location! Our location on the Noel Shore is rightly known as the 'undiscovered jewel' of Nova Scotia, the area offers unparalleled ocean views, miles of all but deserted beaches, the awesome spectacle of the world’s highest tides and a unique and traditional experience of Nova Scotia. We are delighted to share this peaceful 60 acres of "heaven" with others who also want to walk gently on the earth and preserve its beauty and peace. All of our guest services emphasize and illustrate care for the environment.

So far from the hustle and bustle of city life and yet are still close to all that the city has to offer, if you choose.

What makes this cottage unique

Have the holiday of a lifetime, an Eco-Vacation-By-the-Sea, at Brookside Cottage by the Sea in Tennecape, Nova Scotia, Canada. Absorb the astounding views; listen to the roar of the surf from the world's highest tides; swim in the mellow salt waters of the Minas Basin; walk on the beach for miles in an area famous for fossils; explore the tidal pools as well as the woodlands and meadows; fish for sea bass; follow our Trout Pool Brook to the very special place where it burbles gently across a sandstone shelf & cascades in a beautiful little waterfall to the sea, watch the abundant wildlife (including deer-this year one of our does had twins!-, eagles, quail, pheasants, humming birds, osprey, owls, rabbits, raccoons and foxes), discover the old Acadian house foundation near Evangeline Brook.

We are directly on the ocean (Minas Basin), with miles of hard red sand/pebble beach that can be walked or jogged (or carry your mountain bike down and ride for miles and miles) and at low tide there is a captivating vast sweep of sculpted, walk-able tidal sands. There is private access to the beach along a path to the shore and down a ramp (with hand rails, BUT not for w/c access, sorry, vertical height of 8 or 9 feet). Guests can relax with such activities as long walks on the beach in an area famous for fossils and rock specimens (including amethyst crystals), and ocean swimming.

The beach, the sea, the woodlands, Evangeline and Trout Pool Brooks, the birds and animals and an amazing evening sky offer so many opportunities for being “re-created” and restored by the beauties of the sea and nature.

All of these many and varied activities are available without ever leaving Brookside Cottage by the Sea, fully equipped to be your ideal vacation home.

Quite cottage, well-stocked, friendly hosts.

  • 4 of 5

My partner, my parents and I had a lovely 2 week stay in Brookside cottage in early June. Despite there being 4 of us the cottage had more than enough space so we didn't feel camped on top of one another. Virtually all the amenities are there, lacking only laundry on site but there are available laundromats within a short drive from the cottage. The kitchen was a good size and well-stocked except for a pair of scissors (easily remedied) and lots of hot water was available for everyone to shower the same day. Any concerns or questions we had were answered quickly by the hosts and dealt with to our complete satisfaction. The property has lots of space to stretch your legs and the shore is only a short walk across the meadow. Several days we walked down the ramp to the ocean floor and wandered along the coast for a while. The one drawback is that the view of the Bay from the cottage is obscured by a stand of trees along the cliff, but that was balanced out by spotting deer walking along that treeline on several early mornings. We would definitely stay here again as the location is only a short drive (about an hour) from lots of attractions and other sites to see. I would definitely recommend Burncoat Head as one of the best places to start exploring locally.

Not what we expected.

  • 1 of 5

- Put window covering on bathroom window

- Microwave turntable did not work in the first house we stayed in

- Rework the furniture placement to make it more user friendly

- Strange flashing light in the back bedroom (hard to sleep)

- Some windows were a little hard to open and close

- Toaster oven would not turn off so we unplugged it (a regular toaster would be better)

- The location of the property(s) was far enough away from the ocean that we could not enjoy the view

- To enjoy the view seating near the ocean would be nice (benchs or picnic table) just on the flat area before you desend the hill and then the ramp

The Main House suggestions:

- The kitchen tap in the main house needs to be fixed

- Tile in the main bathroom in front of the sink needs to be glued down and grouted.

- The water temperature needs to be raised (shower not warm enough, kitchen sink water not hot enough)

- deck has seen better days, and the outside furniture needs replacing. Perhaps a few deck loungers.

I have never stayed were you have to strip your own beds and do all the dishes before leaving.

We felt uncomfortable staying at both your properties. It was not an enjoyable stay.

Owner's Response: We are SO very sorry that these guests did not enjoy their stay. After more than 15 seasons in business & hundreds of satisfied guests (please see other reviews & comments) this makes us both sad, as we do aim to please all guests, & frustrated. The thing is that these guests were with us for three weeks & since we were right there on the property & saw them many times, we would have been happy & able to remedy the concerns mentioned (including seating at the beach front), IF we had but known. We were available at all times in person, by phone or email. These guests were reminded on the phone, at the time of booking, that we needed to know of any concerns so that we could remedy them. This is our policy & we much prefer to do something when we are able rather than being taken by surprise after the fact by complaints in a review. We are more than happy to oblige & would have done, had we but known. As per other guest comments, the houses & property are exactly as advertised. Of course, there is nothing anyone can do IF the guest has chosen a location that is wrong for them. This is indeed a rural ocean-front spacious property with a clean & comfortable house & cottage with lots of privacy & places to walk. Thank for the suggestions. 2018 Guests to Shore Haven House will find that the following has been done: -the bathroom tiles & the kitchen taps have been repaired & new deck chairs have been added. Regarding the hot water, there never has been a problem, just a long run of pipes from the hot water tank, so it is necessary to run the water first until it is hot Brookside Cottage -has a blind in the bathroom & a regular toaster -the "blinking device" has been removed from the master bedroom & the microwave turntable works For both places there is a picnic table & a bench at the Beach Front. We are baffled by the comment about not being able to enjoy the view. Guests from all over the world find it spectacular, from both the house & the cottage; different strokes for different folks we guess.

Quiet cottage in a grand landscape

  • 5 of 5

This is a newly finished cottage, nestled among trees in the corner of a large field that slopes down towards the shore. There are lots of windows to let the cross breezes flow through. You're surrounded by trees, and from the deck you can look down through the woods to a brook. Even after the severe drought this year, there was still some water in the brook. It must really babble in the spring. There is a distant ocean view too, and you'll want to walk down the field to the private shoreline to experience it directly.

It really does feel like a retreat from the world. Many Nova Scotians are not familiar with the "Noel Shore", despite its proximity to Halifax, the Annapolis Valley and Truro. I live on the beautiful South Shore, but I'm captivated by the landscape of the Noel Shore with its rolling hills and deep clay soil that grows big trees.

The water is very different too, a gentler inland sea with huge tides. When the tide is out, you can walk forever on a Mars-like landscape that reveals itself twice a day. When the tide comes in at the end of a sunny day, the sand warms the water and it can make for nice swimming.

The kitchen is well-equipped; we cooked full meals there for the 3 of us. Buy your groceries before you get here; there is limited selection locally. There are excellent restaurants about a half-hour drive east and west, and good pizza to the south.

If you need internet, talk to the owners. If you're a heavy user and don't have a good data plan, the turbo hub is quite expensive. It's not for online gamers or watching movies, and there are other precautions to take (e.g. turning off automatic updates and photo synching from your phone) so you don't get a surprise.

This is a great base for exploring other parts of Nova Scotia, but plan to spend some time right there too, exploring the shore and relaxing among the trees.
