About the property

1 Bedroom, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 2

This small wooden eco cabin is perched high on a cliff with breathtaking views over the Caribbean sea and coastline. With everything you need, our cabin is built in the local style by local craftsmen amid wild coastal forest in a protected area rich in birds, plants and wildlife.

To furnish the cabin we have upcycled and recycled many objects and materials which gives it a unique character. As passionate environmentalists the cabin reflects our deep commitment to living with a minimum environmental footprint and gives you a chance to experience this for yourselves.

With an amazing view from the large terrace over the neighbouring coastline and the tops of the trees, you can see the birds and butterflies feeding at the same height as your sunlounger or hammock chair! The double doors open to create a completely unobstructed view of the sea and beaches below and the simple living space incorporates a standard double bed with mosquito net on a bamboo frame, kitchen area with gas hob and stove and a bathroom with WC and hand basin. On the lower deck and completely private is a half indoor/half outdoor shower opening directly onto the forest as well as a sheltered area for hanging towels or washing to dry.

The bed and kitchen cupboards and shelves are all made from recycled school benches and the kitchen drawers were made from old blackboards - you can even still see the chalk writing on them! An old car tyre serves as the kitchen sink while a hand cast cement basin adds a stylish touch to the completely wood-crafted bathroom. Kitchen utensils are suspended from a wooden pallet hanging from the rooftop so they are easy to reach while you are cooking. The cocktail table is made from a tree trunk from the forest below and the lights are LED lights salvaged from an educational establishment. Water is harvested rainwater, double filtered and completely clean - much cleaner than public water or bottled water with its leached chemicals.

Cement steps lead to your own private access through a small garden gate with a parking area on the other side of the garden fence. Being a no through road there is almost no traffic and our location is very quiet.

If you like fish, we can ring the local fishermen in the bay below and they will bring fresh fish straight from their nets. We also make home made icecream from local fruits at the Treehouse and provide a selection in a freezer for guests to help themselves whenever they want. Just help yourself and settle up with us for anything you have consumed before you leave.

We are creating a natural conservation area along the cliffside and on the land above the Treehouse and pesticides or insecticides are never used here. We have set up a system of around 20 fishpools which dramatically reduce the mosquito population in the most natural way possible - the fish eat the mosquito larvae and act as mosquito traps. Not fogging with neurotoxins, as many of our neighbours do, also means that we are rich in wildlife as we have many birds, frogs, lizards etc which are killed by fogging techniques.

Fifteen minutes walk down the private road will bring you to a small secluded cove where you can swim or snorkel among corals. In twenty minutes walk you will be down in Marigot Bay with its cafes, restaurants and marina life, bank, minimarket and ATM.

Although many of our guests walk, we recommend hiring a small 4x4 jeep unless you really like walking. We have a small jeep available which we only hire to our private guests or we can recommend a small family owned local car rental company with good cars and cheap rates.

We also rent our 41' yacht Airborne as a houseboat which can sleep two people and is moored next to the luxury hotel in Marigot Bay. If you stay on our yacht you can use the facilities of the marina and the hotel including infinity edge swimming pool, spa steam room and gym, toilets and showers in the marina village and bars and restaurants in the hotel. Check out our listing or contact us for more information.

About Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall

Pablo and I are passionate about the environment and protecting nature. We have worked for over 25 years for international development and environmental organisations and are now putting what we have learned into practice, sharing our lifestyle and our passions with our guests. We were married on the dock in the marina in Marigot Bay next to our boat and consider ourselves privileged to be able to live on this beautiful island with its wonderful people.

Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall chose Castries Quarter

We built the Hummingbird Hangout according to our principles of local design and construction techniques and have recycled many materials to reduce its environmental footprint. We have to say that we have fallen in love with this cabin with its solid wood, its amazing view of the sea with its dolphins, whales, fish and birds and its simple layout. We continue to add to it since we enjoy crafting its unique and individual character.

What makes this cabin unique

There is nowhere else like this cabin! To begin with the amazing view is unparallelled, the kitchen is hand crafted as is the bed and other accessories. Attention to detail is paramount and we are continually adding small touches to make this really a unique and incredible place!

Two thumbs up for the Hummingbird Hangout!

  • 5 of 5

The Hummingbird Hangout was the perfect place for us to stay. Sarah and Pablo were extremely accommodating and wonderful hosts. If we needed anything they were there to help, but also greatly respected our privacy. The hideaway itself gives you the sense of being in your own little paradise. It’s very private, the views are amazing, and nature is all around.

Furthermore, Sarah has a wealth of knowledge about the island, as well as many connections. Because of this we were able to have a more intimate experience with island life and spend time with locals. Without her insight we would have missed out on a lot of cool things. Even before we arrived on the island Sarah was busy answering any questions that we had. She was so prompt with her responses, it made it easy for us to get things in order and have a sense of the island before we arrived.

We would most definitely stay here again!
