Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 2

This small wooden eco cabin is perched high on a cliff with breathtaking views over the Caribbean sea and coastline. With everything you need, our cabin is built in the local style by local craftsmen amid wild coastal forest in a protected area rich in birds, plants and wildlife.

You can check out the story of "The Hummingbird Hangout" by looking for our booklet with this title in the amazon kindle store.

Built entirely of wood by local artisans, we have also upcycled many objects and materials to furnish the cabin which gives it a unique character. As passionate environmentalists the cabin reflects our deep commitment to minimalist living and gives you a chance to experience this for yourselves.

With an amazing view from the large terrace over the neighbouring coastline and the tops of the trees, you can see the birds and butterflies feeding at the same height as your sunlounger! The two sets of double doors open to create a completely open view and the modest but tasteful living space incorporates a standard double bed with mosquito net, kitchen area with gas hob and stove and a small bathroom with WC and hand basin.

On a second deck below the main terrace is a private shower accessed by a short flight of steps and this deck also has a drying area for washing or wet towels. All the water is our own harvested rainwater, double filtered, pure and safe to drink. The water to the shower is heated by passive solar heating through a special hose installed on the roof of the Hangout. The Hangout has its own access to the parking area through a small wooden gate in the fence of the property.

A family of three black labradors lives with us on the property so dog lovers are especially welcome! We also have a family of goats which help us to keep the grass down along the roadside!

We do not have a pool as we are surrounded by beautiful beaches. The snorkelling and swimming around us is so wonderful and the sea is so full of life that we prefer to swim there. If we get hot we enjoy a cooling shower on the cliff face surrounded by tropical birds and plants!

The Hummingbird Hangout belongs to the Treehouse which is the only house down a no through road so it is very safe and quiet. Pablo and I are committed environmentalists and our passion for nature drives everything we do. Unlike other guest houses we never use pesticides or insecticides but work with natural pest solutions. A network of 15 fishpools provide an environmental solution to prevent mosquitoes breeding as the fish eat any mosquito larvae and therefore drastically reduce the mosquito population - this is in direct contrast to the common local practice of fogging for mosquitos with a spray made of neurotoxins.

Using our experience, we provide advice to local hotels to help them reduce their impact on the environment and conserve resources such as energy and water. We have planted our garden to encourage birds and other wildlife onto our plot and we have left two thirds of our large property wild as a wildlife sanctuary. We are also planting many native plants in our plot which have been rescued from development areas in order to protect them from extinction.

We love using driftwood, corals, shells and other items collected from the beaches around the house. We are currently making a range of driftwood furniture which embodies our passion for this wonderful environment.

We have inherited a commercial ice cream maker and as Pablo loves ice cream we always have a selection of homemade ice creams available which we invite guests to share if they wish. We just ask a small fee to cover ingredient costs and work on an honesty box principle where you settle for what you have consumed when you leave. They have proved very popular!

We work with two local Saint Lucians and we have designed with them a series of land and sea tours which are not on any tourist "programme". These are focused on local experiences and off the beaten track adventures.

The local fishermen on the beach below our house are happy to make fishing outings and/or barbecues on their beautiful beach - they only do this for our guests.

A local Saint Lucian masseuse is happy to come to the house with her couch, towels, oils etc to provide guests with a home massage and we have a special agreement with the watersports shop in Marigot Bay for the hire of watersports equipment - a special package has been agreed for our guests. All of these experiences are arranged directly with local people, not tour agents, and are described in the information sheet which we send out to our guests once they have booked with us.

Also available for hire if you book it early enough is our spare car, a small 4x4 Suzuki Jimny which is ideal for the road conditions here. Let us know if you want more details.

Fifteen minutes walk down the private road will bring you to a small secluded cove where you can swim or snorkel among coral reefs. In twenty minutes you will be down in Marigot Bay with its cafes, restaurants and marina life, bank, minimarket and ATM.

About Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall

Pablo and I are passionate about the environment and protecting nature. We have worked for over 25 years for international development and environmental organisations and are now putting what we have learned into practice, sharing our lifestyle and our passions with our guests. We were married on the dock in the marina in Marigot Bay next to our boat and consider ourselves privileged to be able to live on this beautiful island with its wonderful people.

Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall chose Castries Quarter

We built the Hummingbird Hangout according to our principles of local design and construction techniques and have recycled many materials to reduce its environmental footprint. We have to say that we have fallen in love with this cabin with its solid wood, its amazing view of the sea with its dolphins, whales, fish and birds and its simple layout. We continue to add to it since we enjoy crafting its unique and individual character.

What makes this cabin unique

There is nowhere else like this cabin! To begin with the amazing view is unparallelled, the kitchen is hand crafted as is the bed and other accessories. Attention to detail is paramount and we are continually adding small touches to make this really a unique and incredible place!

Two thumbs up for the Hummingbird Hangout!

  • 5 of 5

The Hummingbird Hangout was the perfect place for us to stay. Sarah and Pablo were extremely accommodating and wonderful hosts. If we needed anything they were there to help, but also greatly respected our privacy. The hideaway itself gives you the sense of being in your own little paradise. It’s very private, the views are amazing, and nature is all around.

Furthermore, Sarah has a wealth of knowledge about the island, as well as many connections. Because of this we were able to have a more intimate experience with island life and spend time with locals. Without her insight we would have missed out on a lot of cool things. Even before we arrived on the island Sarah was busy answering any questions that we had. She was so prompt with her responses, it made it easy for us to get things in order and have a sense of the island before we arrived.

We would most definitely stay here again!
