About Sue McGrath

Hi my name is Sue MCgrath and I have been managing Blo Norton Hall since my boss Mr Lorimer purchased in 2009 where he refurbished and brought it to life. With such a beautiful property my job is very easy, we love to rent it out so you and your families can enjoy the house for the many different events you would like to hold with a large group of people. Its great for Anniversary celebrations, catching up with old friends, Wedding receptions as you can put a marque up in the garden, families with children of all ages as they love hunting around in the gardens playing hide n seek and finding the secret play area in the woods. My staff and I also love to stay here as well as work here, its a very special place.

Sue McGrath purchased this barn in 2009

Why Sue McGrath chose Bury St Edmunds

Blo Norton Hall is not modern, does not have great Wi-FI, you cant get a phone signal, the furniture is antique and the floors uneven but what it lacks in Hotel sophistication it makes up for with character and it has bundles of it! I love it for its quirkiness and when children arrive their faces light up, for they see how great hide and seek is going to be. Its very special to me and I am sure it will become to you, some of our guests have been returning year after year, it grows on you.

What makes this barn unique

The house is a coming together and a celebration of family events, you find yourselves talking because we do not have Hi tech equipment or X boxes, the phones don't work very well so you find communication becomes key, even the kids join in! We are not one of these places who hike up all the bank holiday rates, we have 3 rates and pass the discounts on to everyone, so you pay a low rate Jan - July, that's right no increase for Easter or May bank holidays, there's a summer rate and of course Christmas and New year. We believe that everyone should benefit especially those with young children. We hope you enjoy as much as I and my staff enjoy working and maintaining it.

Ideal for our Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

Virtually everything at the Hall and Duleep Singh Barn was as described in the details given on line. We had everything we could have wished for.

Lovely spacious cottage with a beautiful big garden. Perfect for a bank holiday getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this beautiful cottage. Easily enough space for the 6 of us and the gorgeous weather meant we could really make the most of the outside space, BBQ and the seaside that wasn't too far away. Such a quiet, beautiful location - would definitely recommend!

Nice accommodation but pity about the noisy RAF jets!

  • 2 of 5

Duleep Singh barn is comfortable and well-equipped (including a music system in the sitting room), and has nice views over open fields on one side. On the other side, the windows look out over the garden of the 2nd, larger barn (Virginia) so there can be some noise from it - as we discovered when a large family staying there played cricket on the lawn. However, this was nothing compared to the virtually continuous noise of the RAF jets flying over Blo Norton every morning (from nearby RAF bases). Sadly, this spoilt our enjoyment of sitting out in the garden. Additionally, on two of the six days we stayed, the RAF was conducting low flying manoeuvres directly overhead and the noise was intolerable! This is a pity as we enjoyed our stay in the barn the rest of the time. It has nice furniture and both the sitting room, kitchen and 2 bedrooms are all of a good size. One small thing, in our opinion the TV is a little too small for the size of sitting room and meant we had to huddle close to it to see anything.

The nearest beach is about a 1h drive away - and there is a lovely long sandy beach at Lowestoft which we would highly recommend. It's also about an hour's drive to get to the Norfolk Broads where you can hire a boat to take to the water.

Had it not been for the noise pollution from the RAF base, we would have given this a much higher rating as the property itself is lovely. It may be that we were just unlucky with the timing of our stay - and that the RAF jets are not so active other times of the year.

Owner's Response: I am rather speechless to respond to this as your reason for marking us down is something completely outside of our control to improve! I have to say this is the first complaint we have ever received for the RAF Jets in 8 years I have been managing these barns, the RAF do a fantastic job and have to fly some where and we are very fortunate to have the lads located close to us where by most guests enjoy watching them. However I am pleased you enjoyed the barns and we are working on a larger TV.

Beautiful character property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend at Blo Norton Hall. Everything was perfect, the hall is full of character and lots of fun to explore. The grounds are beautiful and gave us the opportunity to enjoy the weather.

We had a murder mystery evening and the hall played the perfect host to this.

I would highly recommend a visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, it means a lot to us here at Blo Norton as we don't ask for reviews, there is so much spam and surveys these days!! So when we get lovely feedback like this we know we are doing our jobs. Thanks again and hope to see you again. Blo Norton Team.

Property was excellent

  • 4 of 5

Stay was very good, except a bit of problem with few bedrooms being very cold. The place was in a very quite area and emergency supplies were about 10 mins drive.

Also shower were not great. Barn information was a bit misleading saying it sleeps 6 but really not enough beds. Facility for spare beds would be great for example folding beds/mattress etc.

I would recommend in having at least a couple of maps, like walking routes to get emergency supplies etc or nature walks/footpaths as we walked to Costcutter which was about 40 mins to get there and when we walked from the main road there was no path to walk down. A map would have helped.

All the other facility were fantastic. I have no complain and would recommend this place to all my friends and would visit again. Next time hopefully in summer☺️☺️

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback, we are always wanting to hear from our guests. Duleep singh Barn sleeps 4/6 in 2 bedrooms, the additional guest beds are kept in the main wardrobe of the master bedroom with all the additional sheets and quilts etc, I am sorry you did not find these. We supply with the arrival details walking maps to the local pubs and mark the nearest shops, but its always best as we are rural to arrange a delivery for your arrival. A copy of the local walking map to the Pubs etc is also kept in the barn as well as the OS walking maps, unfortunately we can not keep replacing as becomes an expensive exercise to replace those that the guests have borrowed and not returned, emergency contact details, supermarkets, things to do are all listed in the main information sent out at time of booking and a copy of this is kept in each of our properties. I will ask our houskeepers to investigate this and will make sure this is supplied. Thank you for letting us know. We look forward to seeing you back in the near future. Kind regards Sue and Blo Norton Team.

Wonderfully quiet location

  • 4 of 5

Duleep Singh Barn is a stylish conversion of a farm building, in a very quiet location with an attractive view across fields to the church. It's very warm and comfortable, and has been furnished with an eye for detail. The open-plan living space is large and well-lit, and the two bedrooms and two bathrooms are of a good size. The kitchen has the usual oddities associated with holiday properties - if you feel the urge to make melon balls or create fancy pats of butter you'll find the necessary gadgets, but there's no teapot or a mixing bowl and only one oven glove. The handbook of information is odd, too: it's a generic document intended to cover not just this property, but the other converted barn as well as the large manor house, and contains information that isn't relevant to Duleep Singh Barn while omitting information that would have been useful, such as where to find the central heating over-ride controls. But this is really nit-picking: we were very comfortable and enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, its much appreciated and glad you enjoyed the barn. I will investigate the whereabouts of the Tea pot and mixing bowls as these are supplied as standard and will be replaced if missing. The handbook, I take on board what you say and will be updated accordingly, however a lot of our parties are staying in all 3 properties and like to know what is going on in each one. We look forward to seeing you back some time.

The Village itself is surrounded by quiet lanes, ideal for walking, cycling and painting and is close to Redgrave and Lopham Fen. Blo Norton Hall is the perfect choice for a relaxed stay in the East Anglian Countryside.

Blo Norton is situated close to the picturesque Norfolk and Suffolk Borders making it ideal to explore all that both counties have to offer.

Blo Norton lies on the River Little Ouse which separates Suffolk from Norfolk.

The Hall reputedly provided the setting for Virginia Wolf’s short story The Journal of Miss Joan Martyn. In the story the main character, Rosamund Merridew, is a historian researching England's land-tenure system
