About Sue McGrath

Hi my name is Sue MCgrath and I have been managing Blo Norton Hall since my boss Mr Lorimer purchased in 2009 where he refurbished and brought it to life. With such a beautiful property my job is very easy, we love to rent it out so you and your families can enjoy the house for the many different events you would like to hold with a large group of people. Its great for Anniversary celebrations, catching up with old friends, Wedding receptions as you can put a marque up in the garden, families with children of all ages as they love hunting around in the gardens playing hide n seek and finding the secret play area in the woods. My staff and I also love to stay here as well as work here, its a very special place.

Sue McGrath purchased this chateau / country house in 2009

Why Sue McGrath chose Bury St Edmunds

Blo Norton Hall is not modern, does not have great Wi-FI, you cant get a phone signal, the furniture is antique and the floors uneven but what it lacks in Hotel sophistication it makes up for with character and it has bundles of it! I love it for its quirkiness and when children arrive their faces light up, for they see how great hide and seek is going to be. Its very special to me and I am sure it will become to you, some of our guests have been returning year after year, it grows on you.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The house is a coming together and a celebration of family events, you find yourselves talking because we do not have Hi tech equipment or X boxes, the phones don't work very well so you find communication becomes key, even the kids join in! We are not one of these places who hike up all the bank holiday rates, we have 3 rates and pass the discounts on to everyone, so you pay a low rate Jan - July, that's right no increase for Easter or May bank holidays, there's a summer rate and of course Christmas and New year. We believe that everyone should benefit especially those with young children. We hope you enjoy as much as I and my staff enjoy working and maintaining it.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for letting us hire beautiful Blo Norton Hall. we have all had a lovely weekend and the weather was so good to us till Monday- but we were going by then so it did not matter so much. We hired Emma to cater for us on Saturday night and that was wonderful-everyone enjoyed it even out picky little ones! Thank you

Amazing heritage property... the chance to live like a Lord for the week!

  • 4 of 5

Spacious hall and gardens with a traditional feel. Great for a large family party! And remote from the village if you like to get away from it all ☺

Ideal for our family gathering

Virtually everything at the Hall and Duleep Singh Barn was as described in the details given on line. We had everything we could have wished for.

Blo Norton Hall exceeded even my wildest dreams!

  • 5 of 5

Weeks later I'm still overflowing with joy from our stay at Blo Norton. We went for a long weekend with friends to celebrate my 30th birthday. The hall was utterly stunning and bursting with charm and history. My guests were all thoroughly impressed and very happy and comfortable for the 3 nights we stayed there. We cooked big group meals ourselves and the kitchen was well kitted out with everything we needed. The roaring fires in the dining room and two sitting rooms were an absolute highlight! Even in February it was glorious to ramble around the grounds and do some exploring.

The staff were all exceptionally helpful and friendly - could not have asked for an easier experience both checking in and out.

Our only slight issue was the wi-fi, which was all but impossible to get working. I wouldn't recommend depending on it, but for us it was nice to have an excuse to switch off and escape the outside world!

I'm already dreaming of the next chance I'll have to come back to Blo Norton again. Thank you so much for providing the setting for the dreamiest birthday I could possibly imagine - it's one I will truly never forget!

An amazing country house

  • 4 of 5

This house is even better than I had imagined. Very homely, warm, atmospheric, full of character, loads of space to hang out with all the family and eat together round a huge dining table. They had everything we needed including logs for the fire, lovely deep baths, two dishwashers, very well equipped kitchen, and they even decorated the house for Christmas, including two xmas trees. Nearly all the bedrooms has a lovely ensuite, and the decor is tasteful without being too precious. The location is good too as you can walk through the back garden straight into a large field, so good for country walks. I thought it might be cold and draughty but it isn't - the radiators are very efficient. Unfortunately one bedroom had terrible beds in it - three singles that were so uncomfortable that two of our family members had to sleep on sofas, which was a great shame. A few other minor issues included an unfriendly 'meet and greet' experience, and a grimy mess around the kitchen sinks, but this seemed insignificant as we had such a fantastic time.

Excellent property for a large group/family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a week's holiday at Blo Norton Hall for a family celebration (our party aged from 5yrs to 80yrs old). This is our second stay at the house, although the previous occasion was for a long weekend with friends and children. The house is huge and the photos don't sell the property enough. With the exception of the two smaller bedrooms on the ground floor, all the bedrooms are very big and all with their own bathrooms. The house is of course rustic, given it's age, but it is lovely, clean and comfortable and was perfect for our holiday. We had plenty of room to spread out and it was more than adequate for our party of 11 adults and 2 children. Everyone we dealt with from booking to check-in were helpful and quick to respond. There are lovely things to see in the area. We had a caterer in one evening to cook and serve a special celebratory meal and I cannot recommend her highly enough - Avril from Chef2dine4. The meal was amazing and she was very accommodating - it was as good as going out for a restaurant meal without the hassle of having to leave the house.

I would highly recommend Blo Norton Hall to any other visitors considering a stay in the area.

A stunning property! Perfect for our first NCT weekend away!

  • 5 of 5

Blo Norton Hall is an impressive period property full of charm. It made the perfect location for the first (of many, hopefully!) NCT weekend away! Plenty of space to accommodate 7 families; the children loved exploring the grounds as well as the hall. The huge, well stocked kitchen ensured that we were all fed and watered! Would definitely recommend Blo Norton Hall to others and hopefully we'll be back!

The Village itself is surrounded by quiet lanes, ideal for walking, cycling and painting and is close to Redgrave and Lopham Fen. Blo Norton Hall is the perfect choice for a relaxed stay in the East Anglian Countryside.

Blo Norton is situated close to the picturesque Norfolk and Suffolk Borders making it ideal to explore all that both counties have to offer.

Blo Norton lies on the River Little Ouse which separates Suffolk from Norfolk.

The Hall reputedly provided the setting for Virginia Wolf’s short story The Journal of Miss Joan Martyn. In the story the main character, Rosamund Merridew, is a historian researching England's land-tenure system
