About the property

750 sq ft with 1.5 bedroom, 1 bathroom/shower, full kitchen, deck

This welcoming cabin is situated on the property of historic Trail Breaker Kennel. Trail Breaker is the home of four time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher and her legendary sled dogs. The kennel is still home to 70 actively-racing Alaskan Huskies, many whom are veterans of the Iditarod. There is a small lake on the property, about 100 feet from the cabin. Outside the back door, a woodland trail leads to lovely walks alongside the Chena and Tanana rivers. Just over one mile from the post office and airport, and three miles from restaurants and tourist sites, this cabin is accessible while still being a secluded get-away in the interior of Alaska. The cabin has large windows facing North, which are designed for viewing the northern lights from the comfort of indoors. There is a deck on the northern side, as well. The kitchen is stocked: all utensils, dishware, bakeware, food storage, coffee pot, full-size refrigerator and oven. The living area has a flat screen TV and cozy seating areas. The main bedroom offers a queen size bed and seating area. The secondary bedroom has a full size bed. The bathroom includes a towel heater for extra comfort.

About David Monson

David Monson came to Alaska in 1977 to work as a lawyer for the Alaskan Railroad. After discovering the office life was not for him, he worked as a King Crab fisherman in the Aleutian Islands. In 1980 he discovered a love for sled dog racing and met his future wife, Susan Butcher. Together they ran the Iditarod and 1,000 mile Yukon Quest, along with many other races for over 25 years. After living in the Alaskan wilderness for many years, in 1990, David and Susan purchased the property on which Trail Breaker Cabin sits in Fairbanks, Alaska. The property boarders the Chena River and thousands of square miles of untouched Alaskan wilderness. After a battle with leukemia Susan passed away in August 2006. Her family, including two daughters, operate the kennel and continue the legacy of this historic place.

Why David Monson chose Fairbanks

The property is very close to the Fairbanks airport and shopping, but, thanks to the trees, the lake and the river, it feels peaceful and secluded. This was the first cabin the family built and called "home" on the property. Because of their expanding family, David and Susan built their current house. Even though they no longer live in this cabin, the family will always be sentimentally attached to this cabin, their first home in the big city of Fairbanks.

What makes this cabin unique

No other cabin in Fairbanks can offer the beauty and peace combined with the easy access to Fairbanks venues that this cabin offers. Sitting on the deck, gaze across the lake watching the wildlife Alaska offers and enjoy a morning cup of coffee. Watch the northern lights from the warmth of the indoors through the two large picture windows. A stay at this cabin would be the icing on the cake for your Alaskan experience

The BEST Ever!

  • 5 of 5

It was an awesome stay. Really fun. The dogs were so happy to see us. Super friendly. They left us a little birthday gift, because it was my mom's birthday and that was really nice and super thoughtful to walk in and see after a long day of traveling. --Reed (9 yrs old).

I'd have to agree with everything my son said and add two bits. David made special arrangements for Reed to visit with the dogs and Laura (2015 Iditarod Competitor), which was a highlight for him. David was also super accommodating when we had to cut our trip to the Arctic Circle short by one day because of weather. He graciously opened the cabin back up to us. All and all it was a great stay. Super warm and cozy and well equipped.

Don't be Put off By the Outside of the Property!

  • 5 of 5

When we first saw the property, we were taken aback a bit, as there is quite a bit of "junk" surrounding the cabin. Once we stepped inside, however, all misgivings disappeared. The cabin is PERFECT and lovely. Spotlessly clean and very well appointed. All of our needs and more were met. In fact, we wish we had not had so much sightseeing to do, as being in the cabin was a joy. David was in contact through texts several times, so you are never alone should you need something. We HIGHLY recommend this property and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

The highlight of our time in Fairbanks

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Trail Breaker Cabin was the highlight of our time in Fairbanks. David is a wonderfully gracious host. He and his staff went above and beyond to make our stay special. The cabin itself is beautiful, well maintained and included everything we needed. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone visiting Fairbanks.

What an extraordinary experience it was! So glad I found this cabin! The description was so exciting and the true stay was even way above expectations! The dogs, the chance to see David do the tour for that gigantic river boat right from that very property was amazing! The cabin was so cool, David and the staff were so friendly and generous. My husband loved taking pictures there and our daughter who is moving to Fairbanks soon, just had an experience of a lifetime with David and the dogs! Still feeling bad that our son couldn't be with us due to school but hope one day we'll get to take him there. Thank you, David and the whole Trail Breaker Cabin crew! Really appreciate the hard work in continuing the tradition and legacy. Best wishes!

Dont pass up the opportunity to stay here!

  • 5 of 5

Our search for the Northern lights brought us to Fairbanks, our luck brought us to Trail Breaker Cabin! There was plenty of room for me and my three adult children. The cabin has been thoughtfully planned and stocked for its visitors. My sons were able to set up their photography equipment on the deck to capture the Northern lights with plenty of room to spare. During our stay the average temp was -25 degrees outdoors but inside was nice and toasty and plenty of hot water for all of us to shower. DAVID was very accommodating and attentive making sure we were comfortable . He even allowed us to come visit with his dogs and gave us a tour of the kennels. The location is not far from the airport, but once on the property you feel like your a thousand miles away from the civilization. Definitely need to rent a car to get around and also see other points of interest.
