About the property

1 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Sleeps 3.

This cozy, detached 1br/1ba cottage is located in a quiet neighborhood in charming Washougal. We are a 20 min drive from PDX, 30 min from downtown Portland and at the gateway of the Columbia River Gorge. We are happy to host well behaved dogs who will have access to our large, fenced yard. Guests will enjoy their own full kitchen, bath with shower, queen size bed, and laundry. Cable TV and wifi are provided. There is also a twin sized sofa bed in the living room. Train whistles are outlawed within city limits but you will hear the frequent rumble of rolling stock as the BNSF Fallbridge sub runs directly behind the property.

The cottage is located behind the main house on a .3 acre lot on a quiet street. Outside, guests will have access to off street parking for one car (no RVs), a fenced back yard and charcoal grill. Inside you will find cable tv, wifi, coffee maker, microwave and window unit a/c in addition to basic amenities. There is a deluxe queen bed in the bedroom and a twin hide-a-bed couch in the living room. Insulated walls and double pane windows muffle the sound of trains which pass behind the property. Most guests report that they are not bothered by the train noise or get used to it quickly.

We ask that dogs traveling with you be supervised at all times. In the event you must leave your pet when you go out we are available for dog sitting duty for a small extra charge.

We are generally here most of the time as we both work from home. As frequent travelers, we understand the desire for space and will not infringe on guests' privacy unless absolutely necessary. On the other hand, we enjoy meeting people and would be glad to have a drink or share the bbq with you as the occasion arises. And we are always happy to answer questions or address any needs that may come up during your stay.

We like the small town atmosphere coupled with the close proximity to both Portlandia's weirdness and the beautiful serenity of the river and the Gorge. You can walk to downtown Washougal and find a brewpub (Amnesia), wood oven pizza, steak, etc. place (Hearth), sushi (The Sushi Joint), deli/ice cream shop (Smiley's), and a unique breakfast experience (Our Bar). We've been pleased to try out all these places in the short time we've lived here.

You'll need a car to get around here. We're a quick drive from PDX and the Gorge. There is plenty of street parking on D street and we offer one off street spot alongside the house next to the cottage (not RV accessible).

About Rayburn Killion

We recently moved here from Northern California to be closer to our brand new granddaughter. We have visited the greater Portlandia area many times over the last few years and were gratified to find this lovely place so close to our daughter and her family in Portland. We have always enjoyed traveling and have stayed at vacation rentals in various places -- some wonderful, some not so much. We strive to offer this cottage as a place that we would appreciate, as we hope you will.

Perfect introduction to Washington

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our pets moved from Georgia to Washington and needed a place to stay before our house was ready for move-in. The cottage was exactly what we needed and help ease our transition. Rayburn was perfectly communicative and made the entire process easy and stress free.

There is a train track RIGHT behind the cottage. The trains ran all night.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry this guest didn't read the description of the property before booking. If she had, she could have found accommodations more suitable to her needs and we wouldn't have received an unwarranted one star review. As it was, I promptly and politely refunded her for the night she didn't use.

Thanks Rayburn - we had a great stay!

The cottage had everything we needed and was a great jumping-off point for the Columbia River Gorge and Portland.

Great little house!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I truly enjoyed staying in a house in order to visit family. We liked having a kitchen and living room. It was clean and comfortable. The train was a little loud :-) but not unbearable. We enjoyed walking down to the Columbia river and shopping at the Pendelton store. The owners were so nice, brought us home grown vegetables. It was a lovely stay, I would highly recommend it! Thanks!!

Cozy Cottage Was Just As Advertised!

  • 4 of 5

Our short stay in Washougal was a great weekend that was made even better by having a wonderful and comfortable "home away from home". Ray was wonderful and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was a good one. He was very accommodating and gave us early access to the house.

The noise from the train tracks did not pose an issue nor disrupt our stay in anyway. The location of the home is very convenient and close to freeway access. Having the ability to bring our dog and access to the backyard was a great feature.

I would recommend that some of the kitchen appliances tools be upgraded (toaster, can opener, etc.) to better accommodate guests that would like to make use of the kitchen. Providing guests with a "house guide" that better explains some of features in the home and protocol for garbage and recycling would be a helpful touch. Other these few minor touches, I would easily rate this property at 5 stars.
