All Linens, Towels And Beach Towels Are Provided With This Remodeled Cottage

As of August 15th, 2016 we have completed our total renovation of the cottage we call "Why Not?" It took Tammy and I and our craftsman Michael Charelian 14 months to complete this resurrection. "Why Not?" is a 3 bedroom, with kids loft in bedroom #3, 2 full bath summer/winter cottage with the Mt. Gretna Charm but with the amenities of modernity. All linens and towels/beach towels are provided. "Why Not?" boasts central air-conditioning and central air heat. The cottage also has a propane lookalike wood stove for aesthetics and backup heat for those chilly fall/winter/spring days. "Why Not?" cottage is brand new as it was renovated down to it's bare bones and all the ugly 1970's removed. New structural wood was installed as well as new electrical/plumbing/walls/beadboard etc. New technology foam insulation was installed throughout the cottage as well. One bedroom has a king size bed (two twins placed together) with and en-suite roman shower bath. Bathroom #2 is also newly remodeled and has a new claw foot tub with a shower ring. Bedroom #2 has a queen size bed. Bedroom #3 has two twin beds with a kids loft that sleeps 2 small children or one teenage child or adult. The kitchen has all brand new stainless steel appliances including dishwasher/microwave/5 burner gas stove and side by side door/drawer fridge and bottom drawer freezer. Off the kitchen "Why Not?" boasts a laundry room with a stackable LG high efficiency washer/dryer and laundry sink. The cottage has a large wrap around porch with 4 ceiling fans. One side of the porch faces non-drivable Otterbein Street. The Mt. Gretna Tabernacle is visible 1/8 block away. If you want the Mt. Gretna Charm but have the luxury cozy comfort this is it. Come by August 6th 2016 as "Why Not?" will be on the "Mt. Gretna Tour of Homes" that benefit the Mt. Gretna music programs.

About Bob & Tammy Travitz

Tammy & I live just north of Hershey and have lived here all of our lives. Tammy just retired as a middle school math teacher and I'm winding down my career as a Delta Airlines pilot. Both Tammy and I used to come to Mt. Gretna as kids. Tammy's family came for the ice cream at the Jigger Shop, I came to sit at the Mt. Gretna Tabernacle for the Methodist revivals. Guess who has the better memories! When we had kids we'd bring them to Mt. Gretna to enjoy the Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach, the Jigger Shop, the musicals at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse and bicycle ride with them on the rails and trails that goes through Mt. Gretna. After they were off to college we were looking for something to do and came up with the idea of buying a cottage in Mt. Gretna to maybe retire here someday. After 2.5 years restoring our first cottage ("One Fine Landing") the restoration bug bit us and we subsequently now have 3 restorations under our belt, "One Fine Landing," While We're At It," and now "Why Not." We now are going to take a break and just enjoy using them ourselves and renting our cottage homes to folks who want to experience the charm of this village we call Mt. Gretna. However there is this cottage on 2nd street......

Bob & Tammy Travitz purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Bob & Tammy Travitz chose Mount Gretna Heights

Tammy & I purchased this property after doing two other cottage renovations ("While We're At It" & "One Fine Landing.") We kinda felt sorry for this cottage and we watched this cottage as it was for sale for a long period of time. When it finally went up for auction we made a successful bid. We looked at each other and said "What did we do" as we knew the cottage was in very poor condition. However it had a vacant lot that came with the property which allowed parking for both this cottage and the one next door "While We're At It." After 1.5 years of restoration and reconstruction we feel we have created a Mt. Gretna cottage/home with Gretna charm but with modern amenities for our guests to enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

It's in the heart of Mt. Gretna Pennsylvania where people can enjoy all types of music, plays, musicals, kids programs and wonderful local restaurants. Even though we have a great tree canopy that keeps the area cool, the cottage has central air for those occasional dog days of summer that you sometimes get here in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Beautiful, quaint, clean and wonderfully decorated home in Mt. Gretna

  • 5 of 5

Our family had an opportunity to stay at the "Why Not" this past weekend. Beautiful cottage. The home was immaculate. The home was filled with beautiful antiques, but with modern amenities. We had a chance to meet the owner's of the home (Bob & Tammy) who we were told prior to meeting them that they were "the nicest people in Mt. Gretna". They did not disappoint. Very nice people that wanted to ensure our comfort in their home. Mt. Gretna is a beautiful little town. We hope to have a return visit to Mt. Gretna and the "Why Not" in the very near future. Highly recommend this home for a weekend getaway or vacation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for that nice review. I'm glad you enjoyed our cottage home so much. It was nice meeting an chatting with you. I hope we can live up to the title of "nicest people in Mt. Gretna." We have a lot of "nicest people" here in Mt. Gretna and that is what makes this place so special. Again thanks for staying with us and we hope to see you and your family in the near future. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy

Vacation in Mt. Gretna

  • 5 of 5

Our selection of "Why Not" as our lodging during our Pennsylvania vacation was perfect. It was truly a comfortable home away from home. We were in a beautiful, quiet, woodland setting. The home had vintage charm with all modern conveniences. When we arrived, the home was immaculate and welcoming with a bottle of wine and homemade apple butter. We chose this location because it was within about one hour of all the places we wanted to visit; Hershey, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, and Philadelphia. All destinations were easily accessible from Mt. Gretna. We also enjoyed The Hideaway in the evenings for dinner and live music, a short stroll from the house. We hope to visit again during the summer months so we can enjoy the nearby lake.

Charming and quaint

  • 5 of 5

Couldn't be happier with Bob and Tammy and what they did with this cute cottage. If you're looking for a charming place set in period with Mt Gretna (1940's) then you'll love this cottage. I believe all your hard work is paying off, Bob and Tammy.

Owner's Response: Thanks for those nice comments. We enjoyed renovating our cottages and love having folks enjoy them and experience the charm here in Mt. Gretna. Yes, renovating these cottages if done right is hard work, especially if you do most of it yourself. Luckily we had Michael who did our woodwork and tile work. Tammy's a real go getter. She goes gets this and she goes gets that for Michael and me. Folks at Lowes and Home Depot fear her. It sometimes was a challenge to keep ahead of his work and we are very pleased with our finished product. It was a pleasure meeting you and chatting with you about the cottage and it's construction. It sounds like you had a full week here with your family enjoying all the attractions in the area. Have a great rest of the summer and we'll see you when you return to Mt. Gretna. Bob & Tammy

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

"Why Not?" is a lovely cottage and comfortable place to stay. Bob and Tammy did a careful job renovating this cottage so that it would retain the old Mt. Gretna charm while providing modern luxuries. The beds and linens are very comfortable. Our young kids loved the loft bed! Everyone loved the Roman shower. This cottage is located close to the Camp Meeting Tabernacle which hosts some evening concerts so you can hear the music from the cottage. If only Camp Meeting would discontinue the outside fire alarm siren that went off in the middle of the night 3 or 4 of the nights during our week stay waking up multiple members of our family each time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for that nice review. We love having kids in Mt. Gretna and enjoy seeing them having fun with all there is to do here. The kids loft in the bedroom is does get the kids excited. Parents commented that they really like it because it was easy to get the kids to go to bed at night. When concerts are at the Tabernacle you can hear the music from the porch in the background. It's far enough away that you can hear it but it doesn't impair porch conversations. Yes, that week we had the Mt. Gretna fire sirens go off. We're surrounded by state game lands and unfortunately prior to your arrival we had no rain for sometime and the forest was extremely dry. Small brush fires in the forest sometimes keeps our volunteers busy. When you have a community of 125 year old wood cottages we appreciate our volunteer firemen's services. The siren is controlled by Lebanon County and there is some talk of getting them to turn off the siren from 8 pm to 8 am since all fireman now get notified by electronic means. Since we had rain we've had no sirens lately. I'm glad you had a great time here in Mt. Gretna Campmeeting and hope you visit us again soon. Bob & Tammy

Owner's Response: It was nice meeting all of you and thanks for that nice review on this site and in our cottage booklet. Yes, we tell folks that its a brand new cottage home designed to have the charm of Mt. Gretna. It was remodeled badly and cheaply in the 1970's but it was fun bringing it back to life with the Mt. Gretna charm. It was an 18 month reconstruction project. I hope you enjoyed the slideshow of our construction timeline on the electronic picture frame on the desk. Thanks for staying with us and we hope you have a great rest of the summer.

Owner's Response: Thank you Julie for that nice review. It was nice meeting you and your family and we're glad you had such a good time. Yes, it's all about the porches here in Mt. Gretna. We love the location of "Why Not?" as it's close to the Mt. Gretna Tabernacle, you can relax with a glass of wine on the porch and listen to all the great music that it has to offer. We pride ourselves on clean fully equipped cottage homes but with that charm that is Mt. Gretna. Again thanks for staying with us and we hope to see you again in Mt. Gretna.
