About Bunny Fisher

Long time board member of the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City. Owner of three adorable pets. Spelman College and University of Iowa graduate.

Bunny Fisher purchased this chateau / country house in 2009

Why Bunny Fisher chose Westville

After having officed and peddled my wares in Chicago as a photographers rep for over twenty-five years, I longed for the quite and seclusion of the country which I found living in Northwest Indiana. I would make the slightly more than an hour's drive every evening eventually arriving at my destination which then was a home just off of Lake Michigan in Michiana Shores. The sense of relief I felt and decompression from the stresses of the day were immediately palpable the moment I hit the Portage Exit and headed East on Hwy 12. Unfortunately, in time that area became over crowded and congested by others who had discovered Michiana and the Middle Coast. Traffic thickened and home prices sky rocketed. Then the Great Recession hit. It was not pretty. The bubble burst but fortunately I sold my home and escaped to, yet, a more secluded area of LaPorte County.....Westville. Finally I found a place where I could exhale. I wanted a house set back from the road with a long driveway. I wanted land where I could garden. I wanted a single story home that separated me from the hustle and bustle of busy vacation communities which I found at "Chez Lapin." Naming the house and property was easy: rabbits everywhere and my lifelong nickname of Bunny. And so it was, "Chez Lapin."

Relax and enjoy the solitude. Replenish the soul at Chez Lapin.

Beautiful house and wonderful host!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this wonderful country getaway! Our party of 7 constituting 3 generations enjoyed the beautiful home and gave us a chance to enjoy the Indiana Dunes at leisure. The house is decorated very tastefully and we all enjoyed Bunnys collection of books. Bunny was a very thoughtful host and made sure we had everything and enjoyed our stay. We hope to go back soon!

Owner's Response: On occasion I am unable to greet arriving guests at check-in and I regret not having met them in person. I would have enjoyed meeting the "three generations" of Ramona's family who I am sure are delightful and respectful people as evidenced by their tidiness and great care of my home. I would not hesitate to have Ramona and her family as guests again and would look forward to helping them have a relaxing, enjoyable stay.

Very private, beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 and our dogs stayed here for 3 nights and 4 days while we played on the Indiana Dunes. Bunny was extremely accommodating and helpful. It's a very quick trip into Michigan City (12 mins) and not a whole lot more for the rest of the Dunes attractions. This home is at the end of a long driveway with a lot of full cedar trees giving you plenty of privacy and quiet. We highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Mary Beth and her family were a delight to host. Everyone was polite, thoughtful and respectful of my property and House Rules. They left my house in excellent condition. I fell in love with their lovely dogs and would be happy to host the entire group again.

Relaxed Country Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We came to Chez Lapin looking for a secluded place to relax for a long weekend and were not disappointed. The house was beautiful and well-maintained, and the yard was perfect. Plenty of space to walk on the property, and a great forest area just down the street for longer hikes. Bunny was welcoming and went out of her way to make our stay pleasant and memorable. We would--and will--come back in a heartbeat.

The property is located just off the Indiana 80/90 Toll Road and 8 miles from I94. The town of Westville is roughly 8-12 miles from Valparaiso, Chesterton, Michigan City and LaPorte, IN. It is also a short drive to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore State Park, numerous beaches, towns and villages along Lake Michigan, and a 45 minute drive to South Bend and Notre Dame University. Michigan City has a vibrant arts community and is home to Artspace, a mixed- use live/work development for artists to encourage creativity. Also home to the Lubeznik Center for the Arts with its galleries and exhibitions as well as its annual Art & Artisan Festival. Michigan City also hosts the Shelf Ice Beer Festival, the Great Lakes Grand Prix boat races, a Blues festival, the Lighthouse Jazz Festival and many more such outdoor summer/fall events. The restaurants in Michigan City have really taken off in the past 3 years largely in response the the city's redevelopment efforts and the revitalization of the North End Arts' District. Every type of ethnic cuisine from Mexican, Japanese, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean, and American can be found relatively close by. Valparaiso has great restaurants as well particularly in their downtown district. It's as if there were a Restaurant Row of various good eats, all centrally located. You could stroll from one place to another on a warm summer's night. New Buffalo, MI also highlights some good eateries. Each of the larger towns have a festival of one sort or another. Westville has its Pumpkin Festival in October. Valparaiso, home of Orville Redenbacher, has a Popcorn Festival along with a Chalk Art Festival in late summer. Wineries, breweries and distilleries have become the place to hang out and grab a great brew, glass of wine or a smooth tasting whiskey along with some good. Michigan City, Sawyer and Three Oaks, MI are the centers of this journey of wine and spirits. While you're in Three Oaks, check out the entertainment offerings at the Acorn Theater. Major bands and performers on tour appear in this small town gem. For theater there is the Dunes Summer Theater with a strong 2016 season of theatrical offerings. Of course the beaches and dunes are what the are is most famous for and with good reason. Many beaches from Michigan City to Sawyer are private but the public beaches in Michigan City's Washington Park and the Indiana Dunes State Part as well as New Buffalo's public beach are spectacular. The view of Chicago from the beach at sunset is magnificent. Fun activities also include parasailing (or paragliding), canoeing, sailing, jet skiing, and water skiing, golf, tennis, bowling and senior activities. There are also a number of summer camps for kids in the area. Winter sports include snowmobiling, ice skating and cross country skiing. Great shopping is also available with everything from the Lighthouse Place discount mall in Michigan City to numerous boutiques up and down highway 12. Everything from interior design, women's clothing, high end consignment shops, specialty food shops, beach toys, sail boats, antiques, garden shops and nurseries and more.
