Chateaux: Places to visit in the Loire Valley

It is in the Loire Valley that many of the most famous chateaux of France are to be found, and for many is a major reason to visit the area. But is not the only reason! There is very attractive countryside, plenty of interesting towns to explore, and a stretch of River Loire that is both beautiful and unspoiled (and a listed World Heritage Site),

Loire Valley Chateaux

The castle in the town of Angers deserves a visit,Chateau Plessis-Bourre. The popular town of Saumur for both the town itself and for the Château. The Abbey at Fontevraud (south-east of Saumur) is one of the most extensive complexes of its type to be found anywhere in Europe.

The quiet town of Baugé is also recommended. One of the most attractive villages in the region is found at Montsoreau - it is a classified 'most beautiful village' - and Asnieres-sur-Vegre is also a very pretty village on the side of a river.

The perfect getaway from it all

  • 5 of 5

This is the third consecutive year we have stayed at Chateau Vary and we love it so much we are already booked for next year.

The children love it as they are free to run around as they please, they went on some great bike rides too. The adults love it for the peace of it all and how it makes you feel after a few days. Can't wait for next August.

Another fantastic week at chateau vary!

  • 5 of 5

It's such a fabulous place to relax. The accommodation is great and the facilities on site are excellent with two swimming pools, children's play area, games equipment and a whole forest to explore. I have two year old twins and it was the perfect environment to let them explore and have fun! There were lots of shrieks and giggles. Paul and Benedicte are incredibly helpful and cheerful. Will definitely return!

Loire Valley Cottages - should be bottled!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time on this our 3rd visit to Loire Valley Cottages. The cottages offer the perfect blend of relaxation and just enough activity to enjoy the gorgeous delivered croissants guilt-free! The children love the freedom and variety of activities available; den-bullding in the woods, cycling around the village, swimming in the pools, badminton, trampolining and of course just hanging around with their new friends. We love and wholeheartedly recommend Loire Valley Cottages for anyone looking for a child-friendly holiday without the theme park chaos. Now i'm back in England and back to work i look back and search my memory and sensory bank to recapture the peace and tranquility enjoyed at Loire Valley Cottages. Thank you Benedicte and Paul!

Upper and Lower appartments, Chateau Vary

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic place for a family reunion with plenty to keep the whole family occupied. the 2 pools were great, and a wide variety of activities, from giant chess and a big forest for the older ones and a great sandy playground for the littlies. I didn't go off site all week! Very friendly folk and an excellent experience all round - ideal for a larger group if you take the whole of the main house. Other, smaller appartments in the stables also looked very good - more modern accomodation for a smaller group. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Relaxing Chateau Vary

  • 5 of 5

This is the third time we have visited Vary, this time with our extended family, and we will be back again at some time hopefully in the not too distant future, as it is one of the most relaxing holidays I have experienced.

What attracts us is the friendliness of the owners, the beauty of the chateau, and the walks around the relaxing and extensive grounds. Our teenage kids particularly liked both swimming pools (heated and open air), the various games in the grounds - volleyball/badminton/table tennis, and the onsite games facilitator.

I spent hours just sitting and reading with a cool beer, whilst the kids played and wore themselves out.

Vary is within easy reach of the full extent of the Loire Valley region and beyond but is always a lovely place to come back to at night to eat your meal and drink some wine on the Chateau veranda.

The owners put on a wine tasting and a get-to-know-the-other-visitors evening, which broke the ice, and lead to a friendly atmosphere the whole time we were there.

The property was clean and comfortable with loads of character, but we spent most of our time outdoors as the weather was brilliant, and the owners were always around if there were any difficulties (but never underneath your feet).

I would recommend this property - both the chateau and cottage - to anyone wanted to relax and discover the 'real' Loire.
