Cottages on estate with pool on the slopes of Mount Etna, just outside village - 1-room cottages (30-35 m2)

Updated: 23-Oct-2016
peaceful paradise of plants with 8 scattered cottages and a pool

This property consists of 3 hectares, with botanical garden, vineyard and swimming pool and is located at Mascalucia on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The owner transformed the property into a peaceful paradise, a park with the most beautiful Mediterranean plants and flowers. There are about 8 holiday homes of two kinds: large and small. Casetta Settanta and Casa Castagno are cottages suitable for a family of max 5 persons (including baby cot) and consist of 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a living room with 2 single beds and a little kitchen. Mandorli, Orazio, Blu, Stalla, Cuoco and Palmento are perfect for a couple with a small child.

They consist of a bedroom, bathroom, a kitchenette apart and a terrace with outdoor furniture. There is no separate living room.

All the cottages are in the park and distances 50m from the swimming pool (open from 1 of April until 31 of October). These cottage have a terrace with outdoor furniture. You can opt to pay for breakfast and dinner, which are served on the terrace of the house where the owners live.

On the property you can also find a jeu-de-boules yard, a playground for your children and a botanical garden. Very close to the property you can find a pizzeria and the shopping streets of Mascalucia.

Exploring eastern Sicily: The accommodation is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily and the volcano Etna. It is just five kilometres from the highway 10 km from Catania and 15 km from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Santa Maria la Scala and Santa Tecla are pleasant seaside villages near Acireale. Gardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches distances 40 km. And a bit further we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Syracuse and Noto are a 1 hour drive away.

Characterful cottage in a wonderful garden setting

  • 5 of 5

Mascalucia would probably not be an obvious choice for a holiday destination, but has all the amenities you need to eat and drink. We rented a car, but the town is not easy to find without a good map or satnav, and the accommodation even more difficult. The free maps with our Marco Polo Guide and from Europcar were quite inadequate for the area, but the purchase of a decent road map made life a lot easier.

The accommodation - pretty much what it said on the tin - was a charming and quite private cottage in the most wonderful estate garden, orientated towards providing shade and full of different trees and shrubs. It was clean and comfortable and broadly provided what was required for a self-catering/eating out stay, though sparse on kitchen utensils - Italian style - for serious cooking.

Our resident hosts were charming and accommodating, as indeed almost all Sicilians seem to be.

We particularly enjoyed visiting the lower slopes of Mount Etna, south side, and went there twice just to walk and to admire the terrain and the views.

Taormina, a few miles up the coast, was a really funky place which we also really enjoyed visiting.

We would recommend the accommodation to others, though its location might not suit all needs.

Mascalucia is an excellent base from which to explore the eastern part of Sicily. The villages of Etna, such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea and Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below! The “Playa”, an endless sandy beach is found 15 km further, south of Catania. Charming fishing villages, such as Aci Trezza and Santa Maria La Scala (Acireale) are also near.

Other Activities: Excursion to volcano Mount Etna, the highest active volcano of Europe

The host and his wife organize cooking courses and are glad to let you taste their homemade wine. Very close to the property you can find a pizzeria and the shopping streets of Mascalucia. On the estate the following products are sold: DOC Etnean red wine, which is really a source of pride for the owners; marmalade made from biological citrus fruits; orange-blossom honey; extra-virgin olive oil with a refined and fruity taste; tomato puree and vegetables in oil.
