About the property

Luxury apartment on the first floor of a traditional wooden Dutch house, located in a quiet street - recently described as one of Amsterdam's hidden gems in a national newspaper.

It's 2km walk/bike to the free ferry boat direct to Central Station, located at the heart of the old town. The house is close to the fashionable NDSM Werf in Amsterdam North with it many restaurants, and there are more traditional restaurants and bars within walking distance for a true Dutch experience.

The apartment has off-street parking for up to two cars. We're just 5 minutes from the highway by car, if you want to explore further or head to the beach.

There are two large bedrooms each with a private bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. One bedroom has access to a large roof terrace with a view over a river and Amsterdam's last remaining polder (great sunsets).

We can also rent bikes for Euro 5 per day during your stay. Within 5 minutes heading out of town you can bike on traffic free bike lanes and visit some picture postcard villages just above Amsterdam or the popular Zaanse Schans windmills. There's also a lovely beach on a large freshwater lake in 'Twiske about 10 minutes by bike.

About Scott Roane

I work as a web editor in The Hague, and I've lived in Amsterdam for 13 years. Prior to this I lived in Germany and the UK.

Scott Roane purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Scott Roane chose Amsterdam-Noord

After living in the center of Amsterdam for some years it simply became too busy and too noisy (I like my sleep). One day I accidentally took the wrong boat to the north and realised that the free boats also went to the west. That's when I found this house. In 10 minutes I can bike to the center, but I can sleep peacefully at night. Best of both worlds. We live in the apartment on the ground floor.

What makes this apartment unique

Peaceful, wonderful sunsets over the field at the rear of the house, and a beautiful neighbourhood. Great bars and restaurants close by at the 'hip' NDSM Werf.

Great apartment located 20 minute walk from the free ferry which takes you into central station. Was nice to come back to a quiet location after a busy day in the city. Scott was very good, providing us with maps to find supermarket and ferry. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to explore Amsterdam and the surrounding area. We stayed 4 days but needed to stay longer. So much to see and do.

Great location out of the fray, welcoming hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days in Amsterdam and were lucky enough to book this charming, well equipped unit in a fantastic location. We did not know when we booked, but there was a large street festival in Amsterdam and the crowds were significant in the canal areas. This unit is in an authentic, close in 'suburb' of Amsterdam, but actually within the city limits. Real Hollanders live and work here, so it is a wonderful change from staying in a tourist area in the canal district. A 20 minute leisurely walk got us to the free ferry to take us to the Central Station and all the activities in the canal district of Amsterdam. We were glad to get home to our quiet, comfortable unit at the end of the day! Our hosts were very welcoming, and were extremely informative with maps, suggestions for restaurants, and even escorted us on a bike ride one day to Zaanse Schans, an area of historic windmills and buildings. Do rent the bikes one day! It is a great way to see the city and surrouding area the way the Dutch do!

Our large apartment was located above the hosts which was convenient if we ever had a question. The apartment had two large bedrooms, two large full baths, with a kitchen and dining area in the middle. We had a grocery store close by in Landsmeer that was great, and there were many restaurants (several highly rated ones close to the ferry landing that you can catch on your way home from the canal district). We did not meet anyone in Amsterdam that did not speak English and I have to say that they are the most warm, welcoming and good tempered bunch that we have met in our two month trip through Central and Northern Europe. Everyone--from our hosts, neighbors, store clerks, waiters, and vendors at the beach were happy, open, accepting, and glad to talk about their homeland. It was a wonderful experience and a place we highly recommend to visit!

Very pleasant apartment in a nice neighborhood away from the city but close enough for easy access.

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Francesco were great hosts. They have a good book that is very helpful for local info. They got us oriented with bus passes and maps of the local area. It is a pleasant 15 minute walk to the bus and 20 to the free ferries to Central station in Amsterdam. With the bus passes the system is inexpensive. There were some good restaurants a short distance from the apartment that were less expensive than downtown. Francesco got us oriented on the bike trails and it was easy to go 20 miles in a day even though we are not bike riders . I highly recommend a phone connection and google maps when biking as there are lots of choices and it is easy to get headed the wrong way. Away from the tourist spots the locals were much more conversant and friendly and we met some very nice people. Used the taxi to and from the airport as we had extra luggage. Using the TCA taxi app to book cuts the cost by 30%. The 9292 app for public transportation is great for Amsterdam. It does require a phone service to use away from Wi-Fi. We did lots of tourist activities and found them all good. The bedrooms in the apartment were large and the kitchenette was comfortable for the 4 of us for the meals we cooked there. Access to the washer dryer was great as we were there 10 days. This apartment is great if you want to be away from the activity of the city with easy access and there is enough local to meet the people in the neighborhood. This was our first time in Amsterdam and we would stay here again.

Eine ideale Unterkunft für 2x2 Personen in einer schönen, ruhigen Gegend.

  • 5 of 5

Our house is located in the hip and happening Amsterdam North. It offers peace and quiet, but convenience to the historic center. It's located in an old village called Kadoelen, that has now been swallowed up by Amsterdam. It's walking distance to the NDSM Werf (Marina) which has a number of bars and restaurants. 2km the other direction and you'll be in the typical Dutch village of Landsmeer with many restaurants. There is a supermarket 5 minutes away from us and a nice locals bar, La Chambre, at the end of the street.

If you rent bikes, in just a few minutes you're out of the city into the beautiful Dutch countryside above Amsterdam. There are traffic-free bike paths through the fields to many famous Dutch villages and towns such as Broek in Waterland, Marken, Volendam, Edam and Durgedam.

Twiske nature reserve with its miles of bike paths, mountain bike trails, horse riding, diving, sailing and sandy beaches, including special childrens beaches, is just 2km. But you can also swim from the swimming platform in the river at the end of our street (just a few minutes walk).
