A Charming Village House in the centre of La Garde Freinet

2 bedroom house to sleep 4 newly refurbished with Roof Terrace

A beautifully restored and furnished 'Maison de Village' situated in the heart of this popular medieval hill village. Renovated to retain a wealth of original features, it has a spacious open-plan living room with TV, DVD and CD player with dining area has seating for 6 and fully equipped kitchen (Gas Cooker, Dish Washing, Microwave, Fridge /a separate utility room contains Washer/Dryer). On the next floor are 2 Double Bedrooms, with big windows, one with a double King size bed, the other with twin beds, (cots can be made available if you are travelling with infants). A stone tiled shower room with 2 basins and WC is also on this floor.

Stairs lead to a totally secluded Roof Terrace, to relax, sunbath and view the rooftops and the Maures mountains beyond. A gas barbecue and seating is provided. Meters from the house are a host of interesting shops bars and Restaurants. The popular village pool is nearby. Twice weekly markets and festivals.

Cute terrace house in main street of Garde Freinet

All the previous flattering reviews are still valid but it's time for a post-Brexit update. We stayed for all of August in this near perfect house in the centre of town. Well, the bedroom doors didn't always latch easily but I won't deduct a star for that - it's called value for money. The beds are very comfortable, the fridge, ovens and washing machine are just fine and you can dry things off on the terrace. Internet is fast and you can watch Team GB thrashing the French on the telly. Liz will arrange for Laetitia to meet you, show you where to park (more on this later), advise on the restaurants and beaches and will faire le ménage for a reasonable price - take it. All in all, the house has more than you need, plenty of character and locationx3, so go shopping and set off for the beach.

Ours was Plage de Pampelonne, Murenes, Cap 21, which has a good restaurant, comfy sun beds, shades and excellent service. Yes, you'll pay for it but what do you expect just off St Tropez? If there are queues, your GPS will divert you onto a very bendy route instead and your wife will insist that you brake before each one, which is annoying but the drive is great - only watch out for idiots on your side of the road, whose massive wing-mirror can destroy yours in an instant...should you opt for all-risk insurance up-grade? Yes.

La Feuille orientale restaurant up the street is well worth a visit if you like deliciously cooked cous-cous, and the next door pub: 'Jean's Tonic' (no, really) has talented musicians, an attentive landlord and good beer. La Presse, La Pharmacie and the post office are all staffed with affable folk, as is the best boulangèrie (the one with the massive queue), so you will soon know everyone in town! Even the local policeman, should you leave your car in the market square the evening before..Don't do that, as he will merely suggest that you go and get a cup of coffee,...no, he won't ask the stalls to move to let you out. Parking is much easier if you find a place down opposite the (très utile) Tourist office and stick to it. And if you are a good enough boules player to challenge the locals, do remember not to pack your match Obut's in your hand luggage at Nice Airport...

Alors, Liz's house is all you'll ever want for a holiday in Provence but not next August please; it's booked!

I did stay several month during winter period in this wonderful place.

All I can say : if you want to explore Provence, look for nothing else. Just contact Elizabeth. Make arrangement. Move in. And relax.

All levels of house ( which are 4, including terrace with magnificent view ) are impregnated with southern France charm, with a bit of a touch of English accuracy and thoroughness.

From over 20 pictures, posters, paintings on the walls, to kitchen silver and utensils, and all what is in between - you'll love this house and atmosphere within it.

Highly recommended !!

P.S. the only thing I'd love to have, is operable fireplace. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, it was not possible to use it. Though, that is least important thing, when you are in Provence, I guess.

Comfy house and perfect base for exploring

I'll echo what my fellow reviewers have said here. This house is

everything you'd want in a vacation rental. The kitchen is well

equipped, the bed comfortable, there's a strong shower with plenty of

hot water, and the setting is priceless: Throw open the windows at

breakfast and listen to happy sounds from the pedestrian street below

(not to mention the smells wafting from the stores selling soap and

lavender). You'll also find small touches, such as beach mats and

towels and a nice bag to use at the market.

Ditto for the town, beautiful, friendly and a perfect scale for

vacation. There are plenty of good restaurants (we especially liked My

Way and La Petite Fontaine), and the twice-weekly Provencal market is

literally out your door. Natural scenery is striking, with towering

hills and easy access to hiking trails. We loved being able to lean out the living room window to see where the action was at the outdoor cafes and if the grocery store was open. Yet the shutters are thick enough that they shut out the street noise when it was time to sleep.

La Garde Freinet is a great base for the beaches -- our faves were

Plage de Salins in St. Tropez and St. Clair in Le Lavandou -- and

coastal cities, but one word of warning: The mountain roads in either

direction from the village are not for the faint of heart (but great

fun if you like that kind of thing).

A wonderful vacation

Our stay here was simply wonderful. We started each morning with a walk to the town bakery for baguettes and croissants, which we brought back to the rooftop deck to eat with our cafe lattes. There were all the basic necessities in the town of La-Garde-Freinet including restaurants, fruit and vegetables stores, a bakery, a butcher and some smaller shops for gift buying. The downtown market was a lively event where we bought lavender soaps and delicious cheese. The house's location (the windows open onto a more traveled walkway of the town) and the relatively small size of La-Garde-Freinet, make you feel like a local rather than a tourist. One evening we brought a bottle of rosé wine and some cheese to the local pétanque court and watched a group of older, friendly men play pétanque and try to talk to us using exaggerated gestures and smiles.

We had a car, so we were easily able to get to nearby destinations including St. Tropez and Ste. Maxime, the Chartreuse de la Verne, the natural island of Port Cros and our favorite beach, Plage de la Briande. We were able to go to a beach every afternoon quite easily before returning to the home for dinner.

Overall, our stay in La-Garde-Freinet was the perfect mix of being far enough removed from the touristic hubs that you could feel the culture of the area, but was also near enough that these areas could be visited if you wanted. We will never forget our wonderful vacation in southern France.

Thank you Liz for providing such a marvelous place. We definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a romantic, quaint and relaxing vacation in southern France.

Enchanting home in village centre

We loved this house. You enter from street level into a passage area (loo/with washing machine off that) and climb some stairs up to the main living area which is open plan, bright and nicely decorated. Up one level are two nicely sized bedrooms and large bathroom with two basins, loo and the best shower ever. Climbing the spiral stairs again takes you to a small but fun rooftop balcony with grill etc. The whole home feels light and spacious and the original wooden ceilings are delightful. You really couldn't ask for anything more. Our only comment is that the fridge doesn't have a freezer compartment, which we would have found useful. Otherwise the kitchen is nicely equiped and has a kettle (vital in our family!). Being centrally located is fun, because you feel part of what is going on (you can hear sounds from the street below), but removed enough when needed. The smell of pastries and bread being baked in the morning is quite wonderful. La Garde Freinet is a nice little village and people are friendly. We enjoyed the local market and there is a small Spar that has all the basics. We would definitely recommend this home for a holiday as you can use it as a base to go to the beach and see the surrounding area and villages. Dealing with the owner was a pleasure too!

What a wonderful week!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week last July, and we had a wonderful time. La Garde Freinet, like most of the villages in the region is beautiful. What we really liked about it is how close it was to St Tropez, with all the beaches, glamour and madness but also allowed us to escape this and explore villages, eat at authentically and reasonably priced restaurants, and feel part of the French way of life.

We spent most of our days at the beach, we had a car, so it allowed us to go to the ‘free’ St Tropez beaches and then explore the surrounding villages in the evening for dinner.

Although there was only the two of us, the house would have been comfortable for two couples to share and we wouldn’t have felt on top of each other, it is spread across different floors and has a very spacious feeling. It is in the centre of village, so everything is on your doorstep, it is really nice to be able to pop out to the patisserie and have a coffee in the morning with the locals. The house has everything you could want, very clean and fresh while still feeling very French and it also stayed nice and cool in the evenings. Parking was never a problem either.

We had such a lovely week, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

La Garde Freinet is a beautiful medieval village nestled in the Maures Mountains, far enough from the coast to escape the crowds but less than 15 km. from the Cote D'azur and the beaches of St Tropez, Ste Maxime and .the renowned stunning coastline of The Cote D.Azure with all its many attractions. The village is very much alive all the year round as it has a local population which ensures an authentic French way of life with excellent restaurants, bars and shops. For those wanting to explore further a field, visits to the historic cities of Aix en Provence and Marseilles are very worthwhile. Ferry trips can be made to Iles D,'Hyres. (Porquerolles) and a visit to the magnificent Gorge du Verdon should not me missed. The countryside abounds with ancient villages, and there are hundreds of Vineyards nearly all of which will be delighted to allow tastings. If the weather is bad and it rarely is there are many interesting things to do and places to visit.

The house is in the centre of the village so you have the feling of being totally envoved it its every day routine . The windows open on to the pedestrianised main street and as this period of architecture offers long elegant windows there is lots of light. As we love to cook the open plan kitchen ,living area comes well equipped but we many excellent restaurants and bars just at your door step you may not find the need.
