About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage with private pool at Domme - sleeps 6

La Falaise is an unusual cottage built into the cliff just outside the fortifications of the medieval village of Domme - officially classified as 'One of the most Beautiful Villages of France'. It has its own private pool on a rocky terrace with a small garden. Being on the side of the hill, the views are extensive.

Inside, the living room, with its rock wall, has a wood burning stove, satellite TV, DVD/video players and a large library of books and DVDs. The kitchen, separated from the living room by a Gothic rood screen, is fully equipped with a fan assisted oven, a 5 burner gas hob, fridge/freezer, microwave and all the utensils needed to prepare elaborate meals. (But the large range of restaurants in Domme are only 5 minutes' walk away!)

Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which can be made en suite with the main bedroom and dressing room. The second bedroom has a small balcony affording views across the valley.

Rates: Our rates include normal end-of-stay cleaning and all linens except pool towels.

A beautiful and clean villa in a wonderful location. Excellent facilities (and toys!) provided and a pool that was perfect for our young family. I would recommend La Falaise to everyone!

The friendliest, kindest owner ever!

  • 5 of 5

We spent ten nights at La Falaise and our only disappointment was that we hadn't booked longer. The owner Andrea could not have been more friendly or helpful, even inviting us for an evening of drinks and food.

The house is in a fantastic location, with outstanding views, and very peaceful. The bed linen was high quality and a 'dream' to sleep in! (Sorry!). This was typical of the attention to detail throughout the house. We were touched by the welcome pack, to a standard we've never encountered in 17 years of French travel.

If you have young children there are books, games, felt tips, small desk and chair and more. It feels like their heart and soul has gone into this, especially when you see the photos of the extensive work they've done to it. It feels very welcoming and homely. I have never seen my husband as relaxed as he was on this holiday and so I thank you for that!

The pool area was fantastic for us because it had sunny areas for our grown up daughters to catch the sun but shady areas for us pale ones to hide! As a result my husband spent more time in the pool than ever before, which meant more family time. The views from the pool area are amazing and I would sit at the table provided just reading and staring agog, extremely relaxing.

On leaving, the cleaner (a lovely friendly English lady) came to meet us and took us over to view the other house in Domme. This was above and beyond for her, in what was going to be a very busy day. As expected that house too was outstanding. Unfortunately we've since discovered both of our girls will be in America next summer and so we can't return next year. But we will most definitely be back!

The owners were going through very difficult personal circumstances during and after our visit, yet they continued to be helpful, responsive and caring. Thank you for a memorable, relaxing holiday.

Beautiful, well maintained property

  • 5 of 5

The Dordogne is my favourite area of France and this was my first visit and stay in Domme. Domme is breathtaking, an old walled town with commanding views of the rolling landscape that surround the Dordogne. Domme itself has an array of good restaurants that you can walk to in the vending to dine and it has all the amenities that yiu will need including the local bakery where you can grab fresh bead and croissants for breakfast. While Domme is wonderful, the property itself compliments the town wonderfully. The property is built into the hillside which keeps it cool during the long warm days and it is maintained to a high standard so that should you want to eat in then you have everything that you need including a supermarket which is a 5 minute drive away. The property has satellite TV so you can tune into British TV or you have French TV should you prefer. Wifi is also in the property which helps you plan your days in and around the area. If you prefer to eat out then it's a 5 minute walk up the hill and into Domme where you won't be disappointed. The pool to the property is in a beautiful location and you look down into the valley from your elevated location, it has all the furniture that you'll need to spend lazy days around the pool. I can't recommend this property highly enough.

Lovely Dordogne hillside country cottage

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at La Falaise very tired following a 2 day drive from the UK and on arrival we were not disappointed at all!

The cottage is immaculate and contains all of the mod cons you could need whilst retaining the traditional style and character of a French country gite. It is nicely secluded within the cliffside trees but still offers stunning South facing panoramic views of the Dordogne fields and hills from its pool garden.

The pool and garden area are very clean and with enough chairs, table, sunbeds etc. for all the family (there were 5 of us) and is a great a place to relax and and enjoys the views. The pool is alarmed (loud alarm), however, is not visible from the cottage itself so we did not let our children go in the pool on their own.

In the local area there are plenty of attractions. We enjoyed kayaking down the river from nearby Cenac, horse riding, hiring bikes from the nearby Bikebus at Castelnaud (great service from Joel and Pierre) and exploring the local area. There are plenty of prehistoric caves which are worth a visit also.

Domme itself is a 10 minute walk up the hill and there are plenty of local restaurants with a couple of other options thrown in (pizza and Thai). We ate out in Domme most nights during our 2 week stay except for a couple of times when we just fancied staying at the cottage and having a BBQ.

Overall, we found La Falaise a great holiday base to explore the region or just relax by the pool and do nothing. During the Summer, the owner (Andrea) lives a short distance down the same small private road and was readily available if we required anything during our stay, not that we did.

Thanks again Andrea for your generous hospitality and for making us so welcome and feel settled so quickly at La Falaise.

5 stars for this quirky cottage

  • 5 of 5

we spent a very hot week staying at this quirky cottage built into the cliff. La Falaise (the cliff in french) was well furnished, clean, and had very comfortable beds with quality linen. We had a super welcome pack including a bottle of champagne. The cottage has everything you need and more. The super pool was very welcome during our stay as the temperatures were in the high 30's. The pool has plenty of pool side furniture and some very welcome shady trees. It was clean and well kept. It is within a 10 minute uphill walk to the medieval town of Domme, which meant the car could be left when visiting one of the many restaurants and sights.

We found the owner Andrea very hospitable and welcoming and any problems were soon resolved.

We had an excellent time there and would definitely consider staying there again if we were to holiday in the area again.

Perfect location for a lovely holiday

  • 4 of 5

Location - Idyllic! La Falaise is perfectly situated a few minutes walk from the beautiful village of Domme, and a short drive from many wonderful places to visit along the River Dordogne. It is also a 2 minute drive (or 15 minute walk) from the local town of Cenac, with a number of amenities, including a supermarket, two artisan boulangeries, and local canoe hire (highly recommended).

Accommodation - La Falaise is a quirky property with lots of character. The cliff wall itself forms one of the interior walls downstairs. There is plenty of space, and all the facilities you need to make an extended stay comfortable The property was clean and had plenty of the things that similar properties sometimes lack (such as adequate cutlery and glasses). We stayed for two weeks, so the washing machine and big fridge / freezer were great things to have. There was also no shortage of reading material, as the owners have thoughtfully provided an extensive English "library" (fiction and non-fiction, including many titles providing insight into the local region). There were also toys and colouring pencils in the room used by our daughter - much to her delight and the welcome pack saved us a visit to the supermarket on our first day.

Pool - La Falaise has its own pool, which was a good size, and with plenty of space around the pool to sunbathe (with a table and plenty of chairs, and plenty of sunbeds), with a choice of sun and shade. The pool was clean and private, and the pool area has great views down into Cenac and beyond. The pool is set off a little way from the property itself, but no more than a few seconds walk. Close enough to not cause any difficulties carrying things back and forth, but don't expect to be able to keep an eye on unsupervised children from the property itself.

Friendliness - The owners were staying in their larger property further up the drive during our stay, and were incredibly friendly and helpful, whilst at the same time ensuring they maintained our privacy. They were on hand to provide any guidance or assistance we needed though, including lending us a thermometer when our daughter came down with a temperature.

We had a lovely 2 week stay and only our desire to visit other parts of France would prevent us from returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a kind review. It's good to hear that you enjoyed the facilities of La Falaise (as well as its character!). I'm very pleased we were able to provide a small amount of help when your daughter fell ill (and pleased to hear that she recovered, of course). We look forward to seeing you again in the future. You'll be mad to miss this!

La Falaise is a unique cottage close to the lovely walled city of Domme. It is well equipped (WiFi excellent) and, being built into the cliff it has the wow factor.

Bedrooms are well appointed and comfortable (Fans being a nice touch), bathrooms are clean and the Kitchen has copious amounts of utensils etc. Comparable to other houses we have rented in the area it rates very highly in this respect.

You have a shared drive (With the owner), but it is not an inconvenience as she is very welcoming and friendly. If you are lucky, she will share some stories from the renovation - which puts into perspective what a great job she has done.

The pool is down stairs and is unheated which is OK in the hot days. There are enough sunbeds etc.

Location is the best we have had, the views are spectacular and you are a short walk from Domme which has a number of good restaurants and a vibrant market on Thursdays. It is also 30 mins from Sarlat which we love.

My advice, if you are looking for somewhere in the region and are a party of 4/6 then this is the place for you.

This is the most exciting area of the Dordogne - where the river passes through steep cliffs and past spectacular castles. Canoeing (close by Domme) is a wonderful experience as is visiting the markets, castles, châteaux, caves and prehistoric sites of the area. Domme itself has its own cave system. The Perigord Noir is also known for its food - particularly in the autumn - and Domme has a range of restaurants from the simple to the star rated. As Henry Miller said of Domme: 'Just to glimpse the black, mysterious river at Domme from the beautiful bluff is something to be grateful for all one's life'.

Other Activities: Canoeing, caves, châteaux, castles. Treetop adventure courses.
