'Monkeytime' is one of 7 townhouses in a luxurious, gated community called Costa Vista which clings dramatically to the coral ridge about 300 metres inland from Fitts Esplanade. Built on 3 levels and gently fanned by cooling breezes, it has 1334 sq.ft. of internal space, plus a 550 sq.ft. roof terrace, and further balconies on ground and first floors. Views of the Caribbean Sea and the incomparable Platinum Coast are truly breathtaking. The accommodation has high quality kitchen equipment, tasteful furnishings, two fully-tiled bathrooms, air-conditioning in all rooms, comfortable beds (1 double plus en suite, 2 twins plus day bed for child) and plenty of storage space. There is an extra foldaway bed on request. Monkeytime is surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation and there are shady, lawned areas around the pool and gazebo. There is ample car parking. Jordans supermarket is opposite the beach. The property is not suitable for wheelchair users. Parents with toddlers should exercise special care on balconies and stone steps. There is a manager on site.
Getting to Barbados and Chilling Out: Barbados can be easily reached by direct flights from the U.K. (London Gatwick or Manchester, 7-8 hours), Germany (Frankfurt), the U.S. (Miami, New York) and Canada (Toronto). Taxi Transfers from the airport cost around BDS$60 (US$30). Alternatively you can arrange car hire pick up directly from and to the airport or delivered direct to Monkeytime. Once you arrive you will want to chill out and relax. The beach is just five minutes walk downhill. It is an undeveloped beach used by locals and tourists alike and has toilets and shower facilities and not much else, apart from sun, sea and sand, and glorious skies! When you are feeling relaxed you might want to take a drink at Il Tempio which is right on the beach. This is also an excellent restaurant, a little pricey, but well worth it. You can walk along the beach for miles in either direction. To the left you will come to Escape Hotel. To the right you come to Crystal Cove Hotel. Both these hotels have enclosed areas for swimming.
Venturing Further Afield: When you want to go further afield, you can either hire a car or take one of the yellow or blue buses which continually ply the coast road at 2$ per journey. At the bottom of the hill, left takes you to Bridgetown and right to Holetown and Speightstown. The waterfront at Bridgetown is very pleasant. There are local arts and crafts at Pelican Village at the deepwater Harbour end, and you can have a lazy meal or drink in the shade at the Waterfront Cafe across the footbridge at the inner basin. The cheapest and most characterful shopping is on Swan Street, much cheaper than Broad Street. Holetown has a Chattel Village with tourist and local goods for sale. There are also banks, shopping malls, and many bars and restaurants. It is close to some of the most expensive and exclusive residences on the island at Sandy Lane and the Royal Westmoreland. Here is a list of places to visit: Barbados Wildlife Reserve; Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary; Earthworks (Pottery and Treetop Cafe); Crane Beach.
Ideas for Eating out and Staying in: These are our favourites for eating out: beach front restaurants: The Fishpot, The Crane Hotel, Southern Palms Hotel, Il Tempio, The Lonestar, Champers; Other: the Waterfront Cafe, Brown Sugar (Bajan cuisine); Chris's Place (Rum Shop and Food), Sugar Hill Tennis Village (great swimming pool).
But if what you really want to do is relax, don't go chasing around the island in the heat of the day. Just enjoy the apartment and grounds of Monkeytime. The best time to get up is about 6 a.m. when the bats are still around and you can watch the ocean liners approaching the docks in Bridegetown. This is also a great time to go down to the beach for a walk. And if you do go out, try to be back by 5.30 to watch the sun going down from the rooftop terrace, cocktail in hand. You can't beat it! (Monkeytime refers to the daily crossing by a troupe of green monkeys travelling along the ridge from south to north, anything from 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m, and back again in the evening. Keep a look-out!)
I stayed at Monkeytime with four of my best friends from university for a week in March, and we could not have asked for a better time. The apartment is in a fantastic location, a great spot from which to discover the real Barbados and meet super local people, whilst also enjoying the beauty of the West Coast. The view from the roof terrace is unreal, and we ate breakfast and dinner up there everyday. Turn all the house lights out at night a take a look at the stars, too - it'll be like nothing you've ever seen.
We enjoyed swimming in the pool whilst simultaneously gazing at the sea, and spotting humming birds feeding on the beautiful flowers surrounding us. We fed King Birds from the apartment balcony, and saw the Barbados Green Monkeys from the apartment on three separate occasions! So special to see so many animals in the wild. The apartment is really well equipped, from the sun beds, to beach inflatables, to games, DVDs, and ample crockery/fridge space - there are even Martini glasses! And being able to walk down to Fitts Village beach in a mere 5 minutes is an absolute dream. As is being able to just nip to the local supermarket on foot in the same amount of time when you run out of rum.
Big recommendations from us (all of which are walkable or less than 15 mins in a car/bus ride) are: swimming at Heron Bay, a Discover BIM Island Tours boat trip to see turtles and a shipwreck (talk to the friendly groundskeeper Andy about this!), happy hour at Il Tempio, the Cliff, the quiz at Carizma on the Hill, and Paynes Bay fish market. And to the south, the Mount Gay distillery, Oistins fish fry, and Crane Beach (a little further afield!)
We lived like Kings, and we could not be more grateful!! THANK YOU!
Was greeted by the owners’ lovely housekeeper who was quite charming. But the place needs some maintenance. The master bedroom Ac wasn’t working. Although they got someone in the next day to check it, he want able to do a full service so the Ac just cooled but wasn’t really cold. The douvets on the beds were stained so presentation could have been nicer. But the owners seemed lovely and we were quite entertained by the monkeys. There is a beautiful view of the sea from the rooftop patio. No chairs by the pool so we would have to walk with chairs from the townhouse up the stairs. The bannister was broken around the pool so that could be dangerous. But all in all we had a lovely vacation. Thanks
This was a wonderful holiday. The villa is just a short walk from the beach, transport and amenities. Views were stunning especially from the roof terrace. Communication with owner and housekeeper smooth and helpful. Immaculately clean. Everything had been thought through meticulously. Surroundings were very peaceful away from the busy coast road. The substantial pool was very refreshing and the views were to die for. We had it to ourselves most of the time. Shady gazebo very relaxing. Wifi and TV helped us keep in touch with rest of world. We loved watching the wildlife including monkeys, geckos, bats, King birds, humming birds, fireflies etc. Watching the majestic ships coming and going was a privilege. This is a real gem and we shall return soon!
This is a wonderful place to stay. The place was nice and clean with 2 bedrooms and a big livingroom and a kitchen. There was 2 bathrooms with showers. The house had a wifi and washing machine.
There was a very nice pool that we visited 2-3 times a day. Supermarket was down the hill 0,5 mile away next to highway from where you can go practically everywhere in the island. Accross the road from the supermarket is a Caribbean sea where you can swim or rent a jetskis or go fishing.
In the house there was a nice kitchen which had all the necessary items. There was a nice terrace on the 3rd floor with nice sea view. If you want to have nice and quiet vacation i totally recommend this place. For bonus you can see every day in the mornings monkeys that wander by.
Wonderful stay in a lovely home. Everything was as described with lots of helpful information regarding the area. The property was spotlessly clean , very well equipped and maintained . We thoroughly enjoyed the monkeys who visited quite often. We rented a car for the 2wks. & explored the whole island including the east coast which provided a dramatic & exhilarating contrast to the west side.
Loved Barbados because there was so much to see & do - even went to a polo game ( first time) - the commentary alone was worth the price of admission! The National Trust open house tours were fascinating with a tour, tea & talk.
Would highly recommend Monkeytime but think a car is a plus.
Best beach - Enterprise ( Miami) Good brunch - Sunday. Sunbury Plantation.
Best lunch with a view - Round House ( East Coast ) & Earthworks Pottery.
Thank you Graham & Dianne for all your attention to detail & for providing such a comfortable home.

We are very impressed with the house and the facilities, comprehensive equipment included. We used the roof top terrace and balcony a lot. The house on three levels is modern and spacious in an excellent location with useful shopping and Bus stop nearby.
The Beach at Fitts Village is quiet and sandy, best to take a picnic to.
The local bus was good for Bridgetown and nearby places, we used a hire car form Coconut Hire for the rest of the island.
Monkeytime is a superb base to visit Barbados and tour from, we enjoyed ourselves immensely, we found it more relaxing than a hotel.

Fitts Village is halfway between the bustling port of Bridgetown and the chic, tourist centre of Holetown. There is a public car park and access to the beach, a quaint bandstand, gardens, public toilets and shower. Formerly a fishing vilage it is one of a string of settlements stretching all the way along the Platinum Coast. There is a supermarket (Jordans), several restaurants (Il Tempio, Calabaza), an internet cafe and a pharmacy. The sandy beach runs for miles in both directions, with many trees offering shade, and facilities at Escape Hotel and Crystal Cove Hotel within walking distance. Other West Coast beaches are Paynes Bay, Discovery Bay, Gibbs, Mullins etc. Further afield are St. Lawrence Gap, Crane Beach, Bathsheba and North Point. Activities include catamaran trips, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling, jet-ski, tours of the island, caves, wildlife parks, visiting colonial buildings, rum distilleries and much more. And then there's celebrity spotting along the beach at Sandy Lane!
Other Activities: snorkelling, jetskiing, swimming with turtles
