A truly Exceptional Home
This is a truly exceptional home and Maire is a tremendous host. We spent a few days here between Christmas and New Year and were made feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. The attention to detail in the house is second to none and there were so many thoughtful touches, such as the provision of basic food supplies which was so appreciated as we arrived on a Bank Holiday (not to mention the chocolates and whiskey!). The house itself is truly magnificent and lovingly furnished with period pieces. There are many interesting books to read which kept my elderly mother endlessly entertained. There is a sitting room, drawing room and dining room so lots of space for a group to disperse into. Each bedroom is ensuite and is supplied with bathrobes. I loved the location which is an easy walk both to the downtown and to the seafront in Salthill. Maire was the perfect blend of being available but not intrusive. My only regret is that we could not stay longer.

Historic, Spacious, Well-Loved, Homely
We were so thrilled with our stay at Nile Lodge. Maire is a wonderful host, generous with her time and knowledge. My partner's family comes from Galway and we visit often. This is the first time we have stayed, other than with family, as we brought his children and grand-children for a visit. This was such a perfect property for 3 generations. His relatives were absolutely knocked out with having the opportunity to visit and Maire was kindness itself when I asked if 20+ relative could come over for a get-together. The gardens are very special too. We stay in beautiful hotels on holidays at home and abroad but the quirkiness, charm and very well stocked Nile Lodge is extra special. We trust future visitors will treat this wonderful house with the respect it so richly deserves. Thank you, Maire

A step-back in time to an age of civility
Open the front door and one is immediately transported back to a more graceful time when life was lived at a far more gentile pace and those with money could enjoy a charmed existence with servants to cater to the family's every need. Indeed, for a fleeting second, I quite expected a butler to step forward and help me off with my top coat while ushering me into the drawing room with its roaring fire and comfy couch while he arranged for my bags to be brought in from the horse-drawn carriage outside. Reality returned as I dragged our two overly heavy suitcases from the boot of the car up the steps and over the threshold into the long entrance hall of Nile Lodge off which are located the drawing room, formal dining room and two of the three bedrooms, The interior still retains much of the splendour of its earlier years with a blend of faux Regency, Victorian and early 20th Century furniture throughout the house. This is not to suggest that such old worldliness extends to the bathrooms which I hasten to re-assure readers feature modern day fixtures and fittings. The 'loo' in the third bedroom at the back of the house is somewhat small and only one bedroom has a bathtub ; however these were small inconveniences that didn't overly concern us especially when the beds were so comfortable. The kitchen has an AGA cooker which all of us remembered from our youth but none of us were confident enough to put to use except to warm plates and to keep coffee and tea pots warm ; instead we used the perfectly adequate stove and ubiquitous micro wave. Naturally as with everything else in Nile House the kitchen was extremely well equipped with more than enough glasses, knives and forks and cooking utensils to satisfy our every need Maire, the owner, was genuinely interested in making sure that our stay was as good as she could make it being present in the house when we arrived and a couple of times during the week to make sure everything was going fine which of course it was. Being from the area she had an encyclopaedic knowledge of what Galway had to offer and on our first night even managed to get us a table at a Michelin rated restaurant and a couple of days later giving us the names of some trainers whose horses she though would do well at Galway Races. Perhaps the most unexpected benefit was Nile Lodge's location which is within ten minutes walk of the best restaurants in Galway as well as a number of the most popular diddly-diddly bar

Exquisite Property, Extraordinary Host
This magnificent home is set on a acre+ of beautifully manicured lawns and gardens. It has all the peacefulness and quietude of a country home, yet it is located in the heart of Galway. It is a short walk to endless restaurants, shops, attractions and Galway Bay. Never have we stayed in a more perfectly situated home. The house itself is lovely with spacious rooms, wonderful king-size beds, working fireplaces, a well-equipped kitchen and all the comforts of home. There were fresh flowers in nearly every room and the housekeepers kept us well-stocked with fresh towels and linens. Our host, Maire, was simply beyond compare. In all of our many, many years of renting houses in the US and abroad, we have never had a host who was more attentive, more helpful or more thoughtful. And what lovely person she is. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable experience for youself, your family or a group of friends in Galway, this is your place.

I took over the care of this historic house in 1995. I have a great interest of Irish history and culture I have enjoyed hugely looking after this beautiful house and grounds.
I very much enjoyed researching the lives of the previous owners of Nile Lodge, especially the Captain and Commander in Nelsons fleet , William Hutchinson of Nelsons fleet who was its first occupant in 1807.
The famous Rev Peter Daly, was an equally colorful Galway character and in the 1770s was rector of the beautiful St Nicholas Cathedral in the city center.
I love walking the old streets of this city and looking at the pieces of medieval architecture, which can be seen in the beautiful old doorways of Galway.
I also enjoy exploring the nearby countryside and love finding special places to explore
A brisk walk or jog on the nearby seaside promenade which is the longest in Europe is so good for fitness.
