Charming Apartment in XVIth century villa with walled garden

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
Old furnitured apartment in country village 15 km from Pisa and Lucca

Casa Gentili is ideally situated off the main road, near the river Serchio in the countryside, though just 15 minutes’ drive from the towns of Pisa and Lucca with their many attractions, restaurants and excellent shopping. The villa has thick, old walls offering guests cool respite from the hot summers.

Two bedrooms apartment is on the villa ground floor. Spacious and comfortable en-suite rooms are provided with antique furniture and homely furnishings.

In keeping with the family tradition and the style of the building a relaxing atmosphere is always guaranteed by the 5000 sq m garden around the property.

The building: Casa Gentili is a typical 'casa da cittadino' dating back to the XVIth century, used at that time by the landowner who normally lived in town to manage the farm hands working in the country.

Designed as a place to work, despite the prestigious façade, it is characterized by its plainness that distinguishes it from other neighbouring villas around Pisa and Lucca, the main goal being to offer pleasure to people spending time there.

Ranieri Gentili bought it in 1911, settling his family there and starting up the company named 'Pastificio Gentili' , among the first to produce industrially made pasta.

In 1995 the building was appointed 'edificio di interesse storico', that is, a building of historical interest, by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Heritage

The family: Representatives of three different generations of the Gentili family are living on site and take care of the house and the garden, all of whom are committed to making this a better place to live and continuing with the family tradition.

The Family is looking forward to sharing this with anyone who loves the country side, old buildings and gardening.

The Garden: is very private and mainly laid to lawn covering about 5000 square meters to include main garden.

Comfortable garden furniture and peaceful surroundings, ensure relaxation to all! The garden has orange trees, figs, nuts, cherries at your disposal depending on the harvesting season and a variety of evergreen and perennial shrubs which make this a wonderfully private and spacious area to enjoy outdoor living.

Table soccer, badminton, bicycles available as well.

Beautiful, authentic Tuscan retreat

  • 4 of 5

Marco is a lovely host and we were made to feel very welcome. The facilities at his villa are very comfortable and there is plenty to do for relaxing in hammocks, reading or playing badminton in his beautiful gardens. Come and visit him for a slice of local Tuscan life.

Owner's Response: People designed the property back in time, would have loved to know it's still worth a stay after centuryes. I'm trying to keep the building and the walled garden as genuine as possible, to benefit future generations. Thanks for appreciating this. Marco

Family holiday - April 2011

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a holiday in Tuscany. My wife and I with our three daughters (15, 13, 11) stayed for 6 nights at Casa Gentili which we selected from many others advertised on the net due to its location, price and appearance of charm and character. We were I'm pleased to say blessed with excellent weather for the whole period. That aside, the accommodation surpassed our expectations. We were delighted to find the garden was even more impressive that in the pictures and was the recurrent venue for both breakfast and our early evenings as we lounged on the steamers over a glass or two of local wine or thrashed a shuttlecock across the net as the sun went down. Inside we found the combination of old and interesting furniture together with clean, modern and functional kitchen and bathroom facilities to be very much to our taste and rather inspiring surroundings with which to begin and end our day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Florence, the local coastline, beaches, mountains and hamlets. Having our helpful yet unobtrusive host; Marco on hand to provide recommendations on where to eat, which beach to visit etc. was a bonus as was his general good humor and interesting conversation.

As long as you don't want a pool and have the use of a car you won't be disappointed!

Our stay in Casa Gentili apartment

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks in this charming property and mostly enjoyed the place as it is perfectly located for sightseeing and visits of some towns like Pisa, Lucca, Firenze...It was our first time in Tuscany and we are a family of 4, including two teenagers, so we alternately visited historic places and had lazy days in the gorgeous garden of the villa or on the nice family beach nearby (about 20 minutes' drive). Staying at the apartment was very pleasant, it is spacious and very comfortable and even without a TV, we could survive! I wouldn't like to reveal too much about the property but we were immediately charmed by it as it is not just a place you rent but Marco Gentili's family house ...and story. Thanks to Marco's kindness and precious tips, we also felt as if we were invited as guests, and not just foreign tourists. We could taste the local homemade food, spend time talking with Marco and even played unforgettable badminton matches!!! All in all, if you take time to get to know people, if you are keen on 'entering' a culture differently and keeping relationships in a more authentic and human way, this is your place. Experience the living!

Casa Gentile, Avane

  • 5 of 5

Having enjoyed in June 2009 the best holiday for many years in the very comfortable, spacious and elegant apartment at Casa Gentili my family and I decided to return for another four weeks in September. Again we enjoyed the stunning and peaceful garden with it's outdoor eating facilites, hammock and array of deckchairs and sunbeds, not forgetting the continuous supply of fruits from the various trees (figs, pears, sharon fruit, cherries, walnuts etc!) Avane, is a small village which is well served with basic food shops, a restaurant and bar and is situated in beautiful countryside with excellent walking and cycling opportunities. Lucca and Pisa are literally on the doorstep and the coast is a 20 minute drive away - we enjoyed many long days on the beach. We appreciated enormously the warm hospitality of the Gentili family and have already booked two more visits for the summer of 2010!
