Restored stone cottages among vines & bananas in prime Funchal tourist zone - Casa das Vinhas

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
1 bedrm, sleeps 2, easy walk to sea, shops, restaurants & Reid's Palace, Madeira

These three charmingly restored gems sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquility is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel.

Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor’s accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment.

A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Each cottage is self- contained with 1 bedroom/bathroom and an outlook of tropical fruit trees and plants. 2 have patios shaded by vines in warmer months and 2 are entirely ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile. The resident owners speak English and Portuguese. The properties are adult only and do not accept children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00 and is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include children).’

WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE: Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters.

Just down the road you have the oldest and possibly most prestigious hotel on the island, Belmond Reid's Palace, where they serve the famous afternoon 'Tea at Reid's' on the terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean. (Pre-booking necessary.) Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shows and concerts.

You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area.

The nearest small supermarket is less than 5 minutes' walk.

Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.

ABOUT QUINTA VISTA ALEGRE: The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira Garden” about his garden and the island.

The “Vista cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted from the old Billiard House and Stables and Factors accommodation.

The holiday cottages have all the Lodging Alojamento Local licences nº151/2009

Truly is an oasis in central Funchal

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to Madeira before and booked Casa das Vinhas after much deliberation. We were not disappointed. The cottage is clean, the bed comfortable, the living accomodation is bright and the kitchen well equipped with very good cooking facilities, should you wish to cook. There is even a barbecue.

The outdoor area is very spacious and the swimming pool is more than adequate. My husband and I had the full use of the pool to ourselves, very peaceful.

We loved seeing the owners dogs, who were very friendly on occasion, and Frank and Buffy are very welcoming, helpful and discreet.

It is a short walk down a hill to turn either left into the centre of Funchal and the port area, or right to the hotel strip, the first one on the main road is Reids Hotel, where you can book for a posh tea. There is a super market down the hill too.

Turn towards the centre and you get an excellent meal at Kontiki's, steak on the stone, and a good pint at No2 Pub.

Overall, an excellent base with peace and quiet, being amongst it all. We had a fab holiday. But, like all holidays in the heat, remember to take the sprays/creams in case you are bitten.

We hope to return to this beautiful oasis, Pauline and Brian

Owner's Response: We are so glad, Pauline and Brian, that your holiday was such a success and glad that we managed to meet you on our return. The pool is very secluded and quiet which our guests appreciate and it is also a sun trap! As the pool is 12 x 6 meters one can really swim properly. Many of our guests call Quinta Stanford and oasis. We are so lucky having so much space in such a central area. We look forward to welcoming you back. Frank & Buffy Zino

Serendipity.

  • 5 of 5

Serendipity is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of our recent stay here. Frank and Buffy have created a wonderful retreat within the grounds of their stunning property. The cottage we stayed in was very well equipped, stylishly appointent and wonderfully clean with thoughtful touches. The pool area was a particular favourite bordered with many flowers and vines. Plenty of space to sit out for breakfast and the mandatory G and T in the evening. You never felt you were in the middle of a buzzing city. When you did want to ventre out of the gated property there it was, the vibrant friendly city of funchal. Great eating places a short walk away, a great bakery just down the hill for your daily bread and the must have custard tarts. All this was topped by the caring approach of Buffy and Frank. There when you needed them and not when you didnt. Fabulous. A rare and special find. Would love to keep this place a secret but that would be really mean to deprive everyone of something that is unique. A special place one had the good fortune to come across. Go there while you can , not going to stay a secret for long. The last word. Serendipity.

Lovely stay in Madeira

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa das Vinhas for one week and really enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was perfectly located for easy walking into Funchal centre and a variety of excellent restaurants, it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and was very peaceful. We would recommend this accommodation.

Owner's Response: Glad the weather cheered up during your stay! Yes, we are lucky having such a large green area of "Quinta" in such a central position among so many amenities. We hope that your comments encourage future guests and that we may welcome you back again. Frank and Buffy

Superb

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for 5 nights in late October. the cottage was well equipped and comfortably furnished, with an outdoor dining area amongst the banana trees. The pool was clean and just the right temperature for cooling off, with plenty of loungers available.

The cottage is ideally located, with many restaurants within a 5 minute walk,as well as two supermarkets.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner, having been collected from the airport by Carlos. The bottle of Madeira was a welcome touch and the kitchen was already supplied with tea bags.

Relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay in Casa das Vinhas. Top quality accommodation, styled really nicely and comfortably. Large pool with lounge chairs, sunny outside seating area to dine in, well located in between Funchal city/Port area and the tourist zone/Lido. We managed well without a car but you need to be able to manage a steep walk home. We weren't really disturbed by the road but it was hot sleeping at night without any air conditioning. Only 2 other cottages so it never felt over-crowded. Well stocked facilities which made a great home from home for our stay.

Owner's Response: Many people manage well without a car as we are indeed central and public transport is excellent throughout the island. Having a 12m x 6m pool with a maximum of 4 other guests does stop overcrowding and is a good way to cool off in the heat!
