About the property

Arran and Barra

Arran and Barra are in a modern apartment development within very easy walking distance of the beach, shops, and restaurants. Within the development is a soft surface children play area with swings, a slide and other play equipment. The apartments are comprehensively equipped including a full range of kitchen equipment, bed linen and towels, with a small safe for the storage of valuables during your stay. The apartments are an ideal base for a golfing holiday playing Porto Santo Golfe which hosted the EURO PGA Madeira Open from 2009 to 2011.

Beach: There is much more to Porto Santo than its beach, but it is an impressive feature. Stretching over 5 miles along the south east coastline, from the port in the north, to Calheta in the South, the beach is one long strand of beautiful golden sands. Even during the summer months there is enough room for everyone, and you will always be able to find a quiet spot if that is your preference. The torquoise seas are shallow and safe for swimming. There are a number of beach bars and cafes dotted along the beach line for convenient refreshments.

Health Spas: The golden sands of Porto Santo have proven health benefits, and a number of hotels (all within 5 - 15 minutes walk from the apartment) have spas offering a wide range of health and well-being treatments, and which are open to non-residents. At the Thalassotherapy Centre at Vila Baleira Hotel you can enjoy seawater treatments in a variety of pools and tubs, and also a wide range of massage and beauty treatments. The Magic Garden Spa at the Pestana Porto Santo Hotel has a complete selection of facilities and treatments for your well being. The spa offers a sauna, steam bath, Turkish bath, power showers, jacuzzi and an indoor pool with a circuit of different jet streams, as well as a wide range of massages and exotic treatments. A new spa has just been completed at Hotel Porto Santo. As well as a full range of saunas, pools and a Turkish bath they also offer sand treatments involving full body submersion in baths of warmed therapeutic Porto Santo sand.

Flights: There are direct flights to Porto Santo from Gatwick and Manchester in the UK from May to October. There are also many flights from the UK to Madeira and up to 4 connecting flights from Madeira to Porto Santo each day. Easyjet offers daily flights from London Gatwick, and TAP and Thomson also fly from Gatwick. There are also several flights from regional airports, including Thomson from Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, East Midlands, Cardiff, Luton, Bournemouth and Exeter. Thomas Cook and First Choice also fly from Manchester, and Easyjet from Bristol. The flights from Madeira to Porto Santo (15 minutes) are operated by SATA. The Porto Santo Line also operates a daily passenger and car ferry (the Lobo Marinho) to and from Madeira. The passage time is approximately two and a half hours. The ferry usually leaves the port in Funchal, Madeira at 8am, and departs Porto Santo at 6pm for the return passage.

We spent some lovely days here! Most of the time we stayed at the beach bathing or walking to Calheta and Vila Baleira. Weather was fine and we enjoyed our stay here!

A treat to stay in a spotlessly clean apartment.

  • 5 of 5

Porto Santo is a lovely gem of an Island. It welcomes you with a pristine Blue flag beach of golden sand and warm hearted people who are just so chilled.

The apartment was a real treat, very clean with such attention to detail for the required needs of guests. There is even a beach bag, sun hats and a wind shelter to mention just a few of those special extras to enjoy should you wish. It is also fully equiped i.e washing machine, large fridge and freezer, cooker, dowstairs toilet and shower, (full bathroom upstairs) all fitted to a very high standard. The two upstairs bedrooms having fitted robes with full length mirrors were spacious, having a lovely view of Pico de Ana Ferreira (283m), a conical volcanic peak.

Ok too good to be true!, the apartment is tastefully situated in a block of four, there are more blocks of the same construction, not a problem for us. If I have to make a gripe then the only thing was that there were no pillowcases on any of the beds, again not a problem as had brought our own. The owner had sent full details of how to contact the housekeeper but we chose not to.

GETTING THERE

We arrived via the Porto Santo ferry :- an excellent service, this time we paid 22 euros extra for two adults to travel first class and our four year old was free, well worth it as you are provided with breakfast. WOULD NOT recommend first class for your maiden sail as the vessel has so much to offer.

WHAT DID WE DO

Long lunches :-

Gel burger, with outside tables spawling on to the main square beneath palm trees.

Mar e Sol, just 400m from the apartment, this place has a very good location with terrace right on the beach front. The Maderian owner with a Londen accent is very happy to spend time with you.

Played on the beach most days.Walked to many interesting places. one to try for the fit and able is Camacha and Fonte da Areia, although you can take a bus to Camacha, and the trail takes you steeply down to a wave-battered beach, a totally different contrast to the other side.

There are so many things to tell you about Porto Santo but you need to expreience for yourself it's spectacular qualities in every form.

I would like to thank the owners of this property who made it so easy to book, and provided excellent accomodation.

We will return with out doubt, Obribgado.

Porto Santo - a dream

  • 5 of 5

Excellent in terms of accomodation and location related to the rental rates. Very proper and clean. Nice view to the West, because there were no further buildings. Calm area, because we were the only ones there at that time. Very nice support by the owner and the housekeeper.

Others:

Perfect island for calming down if wanted. Well equipped supermarket close to the appartment, fresh fish daily available in supermarked Vila Baleira close to the gas station. Used the kitchen rather than visiting restaurants. Next year we might return if possible

In love with Porto Santo

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Porto Santo and really enjoyed the apartment.

The location is perfect, close to a small supermarket and in walking distance to the beach. We especially loved the bikes, which took us all around the island, so we could get to know all parts of Porto Santo. The views, especially on the west coast of the island, are really breathtaking.

Although we did a lot of cooking by ourselfs, Casa da Alvo is a real gem close to the apartment. The owners are super sweet and the food is excellent!

A special thanks to André, who not only provided transfer from and to the airport but also gave us a lot of information about Porto Santo and was always only a phone call away.

Thank you Graham for having us!

Schöne Ferienwohung in guter Lage

  • 5 of 5

Super Badeurlaub!

  • 5 of 5

Absolut empfehlenswert!

Owner's Response: For our UK readers this is the Google Translate version. We hope it is accurate! "Beautiful, well-maintained and clean apartment with excellent service. The transfer from the port to the apartment and back was organized at no extra cost, we had at any time a contact person and felt well looked after. The island is fantastic for a beach holiday with young children (ours are 4 and 7). Highly Recommended!" Thanks for this great review. Graham & Anne

Schöne, neue Wohnung mit allem was man braucht

  • 5 of 5

Super. Man braucht gar kein Auto.

Porto Santo ist eine kleine nette Insel mit freundlichen Menschen. Es gibt auch nicht so viele Touristen. Und die kommen fast nur aus Portugal.

Location

Nearest Airport
5 Kilometres
Porto Santo
Nearest Ferry
5 Kilometres
Porto Santo
Car: not necessary

About 25 miles North East of Madeira, the island of Porto Santo is only about 8 miles long by 4 miles wide, and dominated by a 5 mile golden sandy beach along its south eastern coastline. Average daily temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, only occasionally dropping below 16 or 17 in the winter, or rising higher than 28 or 30 during the summer.

The apartment is located in a very convenient area with shops, bank, bars, restaurants, tennis club and the beach within 5 minutes walk. All of the many other facilities of Porto Santo are within easy reach, including the golf course which is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi ride away.

The main town of Vila Baleira offers shops, museums, churches and a small market, and is a leisurely 20 minute walk away, or an even more relaxing stroll along the beach. There are numerous walking opportunities around the island, with many interesting geological features to explore.

Other Activities: karting, health spas

Golf: The Porto Santo Golf Course, designed by Seve Ballesteros, was opened in 2004 and hosted the Madeira Open, a round of the European PGA Championship, from 2009 to 2011. The 18 hole course is a par 72, comprising six par 3's, six par 4's, and six par 5's, with championship, medal, yellow and ladies tees.

The first nine holes are American in style, with a number of lakes and other water features, and a stunning outlook over the south coast bay and beach. The back nine extends up to the high cliffs of the northern coastline and combines undulating fairways, typical of British links courses, with even more spectacular scenery.

Amongst the most impressive holes are the 13th, 14th and 15th, running along the cliff top and giving players magnificent views over the jagged shoreline far below.

The 14th is probably the course's signature hole. It is a dog leg right across the cliffs, with a tempting shot direct to the green for big hitters. Or perhaps it's the 10th, another par-5 where you may decide to manage the water hazards by playing a nine iron second shot before a long iron approach to the green.

As well as the championship course, there is a 9 hole par-3 course, a driving range, putting green, chipping area, and a magnificent clubhouse with a pro shop, bars, restaurant, jacuzzi and sauna facilities.

9 hole, 18 hole and multiple round tickets are available, as well as club, trolley and buggy hire.
