Whether a romantic rendez-vous, a family gathering, or a reunion of friends, just imagine spending time in your own house in the heart of an enchanting and lively medieval village, surrounded by gorgeous fields, limestone cliffs, and a magnificent river, where you can take just a short walk to artist studios, gourmet restaurants, and wonderful shops, yet live in the delightful and sun-lit privacy of your own home, perfectly located for day trips or hikes or bicycling, to castles, vineyards, markets, museums and more, and perfect for cooking your fresh market goods in the spacious fully-equipped kitchen at night.

Between the Dordogne and Provence, on a cliff overlooking a magnificent river valley, lies the lively, medieval village of St. Cirq Lapopie, a place Richard the Lion-hearted once failed to conquer.

And between ancient 13th Century walls, in the heart of this charming village alive with history, lies our newly renovated, fully-equipped, five bedroom, four bathroom home: Coeur de Lion.

A once in a lifetime vacation: there is plenty of room for a family or two, or for a reunion or large group of friends, but the design of the house, with its master bedroom, bath, and study just above the open living space, makes this a cozy, intimate place for even a single couple.

As you stroll through the village's medieval gate and gaze at the ancient red-roofed houses, many garlanded with flowers, you'll imagine that time has stood still.

But when you walk through the old oak door of our home, all the contemporary trappings are there-- from the fully-applianced gourmet kitchen to the luxurious king beds to the two-person porcelain tubs.

Designated an historic site and yet alive with modern life, St. Cirq Lapopie has been a mecca for artists and writers throughout the past century. The town has unique shops, many fine restaurants, art studios, a museum, a cathedral, and more. There's a sandy beach too. You don't have to stray far.

Yet just beyond the village environs lie castles and markets, cave paintings and cathedrals, museums and vineyards, and the lush countryside. You can bicycle for traffic-free miles along the majestic Lot river. Or canoe for hours along the banks of the river from town to town. Or fish or golf. Or simply walk to the local castle or a nearby cafe or the neighboring patisserie.

Whether your prefer lazing or action, window gazing or window shopping, dining out or cooking in, day trips or just a stroll to the corner, there is no end of enticing choices in our friendly, inviting village.

*Richard the Lion-Heart (Coeur de Lion, the name of our house) was repelled by village archers from invading St. Cirq Lapopie in the 12th Century! (There's an archer's window in the house.) More recently, St. Cirq Lapopie was designated 'Premier' among 'the most beautiful villages in France.'

* Ranked 'Premier' among France's 'Most Beautiful Villages' (and under consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

About Charles Morgan

We are a family of five, from Brookline, Massachusetts, and we came to St. Cirq Lapopie for my wife's ---th birthday, knowing only about the town from a few lines in a tourist book and an online website. It is in southwestern France, so we knew it would be wonderful. But what we came upon surprised us all, and took our breath away: a real medieval village, a step back in time, intimate and self-contained, full of life, full of restaurants and shops, friendly denizens, and amazing views.

And as if that weren't enough, the village is situated in the heart of an extraordinarily beautiful river valley, full of markets, and castles, and vineyards, and caves, and more going on than we could take in during our two week stay.

Coincidentally, this wonderful property, much in need of restoration, went up for sale the last days of our visit.... and, on a whim, but a thoughtful, purposeful whim, we bought it. And with the guidance of friends and the help of some extraordinary local workmen, under the leadership of the very talented builder, Ivan de Jong, we began a surprisingly smooth and successful renovation: a building centuries old, now with the trappings of contemporary living.

Charles Morgan purchased this house in 2011

Why Charles Morgan chose Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

In addition to the great pleasure of having a house in such a special village, this particular house, a characteristic stone house with its familiar red-tiled roof, was built about the 13th Century and has the charm of history (for example, an archer's window from which we imagine arrows were rained down upon King Richard the Lion-hearted in his foiled attempt to conquer this little city), as well as some lovely views, architectural details, and a location just up the street from the ancient arch which draws one into the village. It is just off the main streets, so a quick walk to restaurants and shops, yet in the morning and evenings it is quiet enough on the street to pull out chairs and watch the sky with a glass of wine or hors d'oeuvres in hand. In addition it is situated just below the house of the founder of surrealism, Andre Breton, and has a lovely public garden behind it, just off the beaten path, as well as its own private garden a short walk away.

What makes this house unique

There is nothing like living in a medieval village in a fully renovated medieval home, with beauty and history at every turn, not only within the town, but within the house as well. The light, the location, the living space, make this a very special place for a vacation with family, for a family reunion, for a couples getaway, or a gathering of friends. The layout, while designed to sleep up to 10 people, with five bedrooms and three and 1/2 bathrooms, has an openness and comfort that even a single couple or small family can enjoy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From E.M. (Vermont) April 2013,

Just a note to tell you that we looked in on the renovations during the week we stayed in St. Cirq Lapopie this past April, and the work looked fantastic. We took a tour and we all agreed: the house is ideal in size, and ideally located. The open living space as you enter through that old oak door is beautiful-- not only good light and great views, but a warm, classy, AND comfortable place to hang out with cocktails or beer and/or crackers and chèvre, for good conversations about the days events. And, of course, we know something about the days events! Even in the first part of April, the village and the valley are gorgeous. We walked all over the countryside, rode bicycles along the river, and visited neighboring markets. We didn't even get to the caves (next time, for sure). And we found some favorite restaurants in town, as well as the new boulangerie which we visited many mornings, just up the street. Croissants and pain au chocolat to equal the best of Paris, in our humble opinions.

We really wished we could have stayed in Coeur de Lion-- it is just a marvelous space, and it is clear that the renovation work is of a high order. Thank you for telling us about St. Cirq Lapopie, motivating us to visit (we are really glad we didn't just grab the usual country house with a pool-- instead, we had a real French experience). And next time, and there will be a next time, we will be staying at your house. Vive Coeur de Lion!

3 weeks, 3 generations! A fabulous trip!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent three weeks in this wonderful house, and loved every minute! Seven of us -- three generations -- including two children ages five and 2 1/2. (It's important that young children be stair-safe in this house, since there are quite a few stairs.) The 13th-century house itself is beautifully-restored and very comfortable. There's a great kitchen stocked with absolutely everything our two master-chefs needed; the beds are comfortable; there are several bathrooms with good showers and a couple of soaking tubs as well; two "living rooms" where evening hang-outs happened. The windows, the views....I could go on and on.....

St-Cirq-Lapopie is a medieval cliff-village quite beyond description. Your first view just kind of takes your breath away! It was a delightful village to wander, and we ate at most of the restaurants that Charlie recommended. (Ice cream at Bar LaPopie is indeed special!)

Also had a couple of wonderful meals in nearby towns: La Roue in Cabrerets, and the fabulous trout at a restaurant in Vers called La Truite Doree (located at the old hotel). We also enjoyed an evening at l'Olio just across the river in Tour de Faure -- very good pizza, great views of St Cirq up on the cliff, and a nice spot for the kids to run around while we enjoyed the cool evening!

We loved the Sunday morning market in Limogne, and of course the market in Cahors.

Great day-trip was a drive up to Figeac, taking the Lot River route on the way up, and the Cele River route on the way back -- such beautiful countryside, small beautiful stone villages, etc. And on the Cele River road, there's a wonderful quirky art installation a few minutes outside of Cabrerets just beyond the tunnel. The artist has spent 40 years creating wonderful art constructions in his house at the base of the cliff, and calls it something like the "Museum of the Unusual" (in French, of course). He's an unusual guy -- kind of hermit-like -- and very particular about "no photos" unless you pay the 2 or 3 Euro entrance fee. (So I wouldn't advise a quick roadside photo-snap!)

We rented our own 7-person boat for a few hours in Bouzies and cruised the Lot River and navigated one of the locks.

We visited the Chateau de Ceneviere nearby -- a real highlight.

One special treat: a full day in the Dordogne region (around Les Eyzies) with a guide, visiting pre-historic cave art with a woman who wrote the book (literally) Christine Desdemaines. Eng.-speaking. Not cheap but worth it.

This home and village are amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This home and village are amazing!

We went for a family vacation ( two kids: 9 and 6, and four adults) in France this summer. While our trip started with Paris, St. Cirq Lapopie was the perfect complement to four days in the City.

The scenery in St Cirq is breathtaking; nothing like we have ever seen; the Medieval Village, the shear cliffs, the meandering Lot River. The house (Couer de Lion) is beautiful, very comfortable and conveniently located in the Village. The kitchen is very well appointed; fantastic for cooking and an evening at home. The five bedrooms provided everything we needed and expected. The owner is extremely helpful (provided lots of suggestions and very prompt in responding to any inquiries). The location allows for an easy walk to the shops, restaurants and the Lot River.

The Village has an array of unique and interesting shops from the small woodworking shop (with a kind older man and his dog) to the Cooking shop near the top of the hill. The restaurants were fabulous. Each restaurant we went to was great – amazing duck and fantastic wine! The prices were much more reasonable than Paris with wonderful food and a much more relaxed atmosphere. All of the people we encountered in this lovely town were kind and patient to us with our limited knowledge of French!

In Saint Cirq, there is a never-ending list of options: cave drawings (Peche Merle), canoeing (kalapca), swimming, biking, horseback riding, castles, vineyards. You could literally stay for weeks. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience St Cirq and Coeur Lion.

In Paris, we did the Louvre (parismuse ), learned to make macarons (la cuisine paris), went to the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, took a boat tour on Seine and walked all around this beautiful city.

Enchanting Vacation

A Wonderful Place to Have A Most Enchanting Vacation

My husband and I wanted a deeper experience of France than we’d had on any of our earlier trips - we wanted to live like locals. To achieve that dream we sought a unique and idyllic setting in the south of France. Our extensive research revealed Coeur de Lion, a beautiful 13th century house in the historic perched village of St. Cirq Lapopie, high above the River Lot. We later learned that St. Cirq has officially been designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The owner created Coeur de Lion from the remnants of a 13th Century stone structure on the tiny street which winds it's way uphill from the arch, the only remaining remnant of the medieval fortress wall, to the top of the village, high above the river. The views from the house are stunning, either overlooking the hillside and the Lot river or down the winding street to the ancient gate.

As enchanting as St. Cirq is, it is also ideally located for exploring the whole Lot Valley and neighboring areas that are rife with beautiful chateaux, other perched villages, castles, scenic overlooks, historic churches, cathedrals. We visited Rocamadour, Conques, Belcastel, Albi, Lacapelle Livron, Soulliac, Sarlat, Cahors, Peche Merle, an elaborate and fascinating grotto, and travelled the wine road of Cahors.

We used the chef's kitchen to make wonderful meals for ourselves and visitors. And when we didn't feel like cooking, we dined in style at the restaurants in St. Cirq and the surrounding area. The food and wine in the Lot valley is varied and excellent. Just one story - we drove to Cajarc to attend the Festival de Safran and had a lovely lunch at L'Allee de Vigne. Each course of the four course lunch in this charming restaurant, including dessert, used the saffron theme of the day and it was a delightful afternoon.

If you are looking for an experience of French life - please follow our lead - you will make memories for a lifetime.

A gem of a house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I didn't have any idea what to expect when we made plans with two other couples to stay at Coeur de Lion, except that we had been sent (by the owner) comprehensive instructions about every aspect of the house, including the name of a nice English-speaking neighbor who could offer help and suggestions, as well as a full gamut of ideas of things to enjoy in and around St Cirq Delapopie. What a delightful surprise to drive through the ancient gate of the town and discover a beautifully renovated, spacious and comfortable home! The rooms and bathrooms are all in excellent shape, and the living area and kitchen area is perfect for a game of cards, reading, and a couple of home-cooked meals. Everywhere we went, the merchants and restaurant owners knew "Charlie." As well-traveled as we both are, we couldn't believe that a spot like this one had never appeared on our radar. We had such fun biking through the countryside, canoeing down a beautiful river, picnicking under the trees, discovering the lovely little shops of St Cirq Lapopie, marketing in nearby Cahors, and relaxing at the end of the day with a glass of wine in the wonderful private garden, overlooking a stunning vista. In short, a fantastic place to bring friends and family. We couldn't have been happier with our stay and will always cherish the memories of such a lovely trip.

Great trip, great house, great kitchen!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have just returned from a magical trip in Europe which included an incredible week at Coeur du Lion in St Cirq Lapopie. My husband and I have two kids, ages 8 and 10, and we shared the very large and comfortable house with another family of three (2 adults and 1 child). I was so delighted as we drove up to the town to see that it is as beautiful as all the photos I had seen, and even more thrilled when we opened the door to the house to see that it too was as wonderful as Charles' website photos.

The house is so well appointed. The beds comfortable, bathrooms lovely and what we loved the most was the kitchen and to cook in it. We ate every meal in, and when we were out on a day trip, brought bread, cheese and meats with us for a picnic. We shopped mostly at the local markets and filled in when we needed at the store at the bottom of the hill (town called Tour de la Faure) or at larger stores on our way back from day trips like a Carrefour in Cahors. The market we loved the most was in Limogne. The butcher in that town whose store was right alongside the market had fabulous duck rillettess and more. There is wine to buy in town, but to be honest there was much less expensive and delicious Rose at the store in Tour de la Faure. Stock up on a lot and sit on the patio at the end of the day with bread and cheese. It's incredible.

We loved our stay, our walks along the river, exploring castles and walking through town. Our favorite time to wander through town was in the evening after our homemade dinners. The town gets lit up and it's quieter then during the day and you feel like you've been transported back in time.

A magic experience in a world out of a picture book!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our vacation at Coeur de Lion in St Cirq was a magical experience.

The description of the house and town was far exceeded by the actuality of the amazing experience.

Waking up in a medieval village surrounded by ancient preserved houses, gardens in full flower and spectacular views swept us away. Waking up each morning to a jog through the woods at the top of the hill or on the river down below, followed by fresh croissants at the village bakery and then long meandering bike rides through the beautiful countryside.

We found funky old museums, wonderful little villages on our rides, to sit and sip a coffee while admiring the life around us while chatting with the proprietor.

We visited many small villages, some with a few cottages and others climbing up the hillsides, such as Cordes Sur Ciel.

Exploring alley-ways, we found quiet cafes with views out over the countryside.

Lunch in Cahors at Cotes du Sud was a surprise gourmet treat.

We dropped by a couple of local wineries and were surprised by the hospitality of the vintners.

Great place for a family reunion!
