About the property

2 bedroom house with private garden

Rue Marsis is a delightful stone cottage with views from the hill top of Gourdon over the Dordogne countryside. Decorated in a contemporary French style and only a moments walk from all that Gourdon has to offer, this cottage provides the perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in the French culture. Tucked away in one of Gourdon's medieval streets, the cottage enjoys the peace and quiet of a small hamlet whilst restaurants, cafes, banks and shops are a short hop away down on the boulevard that rings the historic heart of this idylic town. If you wish to eat in there is a well equipped kitchen and a charming terrace with views out over the Dordogne.

The cottage is ideal for couples or families looking to explore the region. It is essential to visit our website at petitgite.com to see the great range of activities and sightseeing that the region offers.

Gourdon is a friendly town with a population of 5000. In summer there is an open-air heated swimming pool, which includes a childrens pool. The town also has a 2 screen cinema with some films showing in the original English. As well as the large Saturday market there are additional markets throughout the summer, selling local farm produce and hand-made crafts.

The town hosts several events throughout the year from flea markets to music recitals and medieval reinactments.

It is possible to travel to Gourdon by train. The nearby lake has a playground and it is possible to swim, with lifeguards in the summer. Gourdon is surrounded by spectacular countryside and there are some good walks to do. We keep a small cool box, thermos and picnic things at the cottage to help with your days out.

Within an hour radius of Gourdon there are a very large number of places to visit. There are a good deal of medieval bastide towns, châteaux, vineyards, prehistoric sites, caves, gardens and museums. On our website at petitgite.com we have a page dedicated to children friendly days out, with links to other websites.

To get here there are 5 possible airports (Brive-Dordogne, Bergerac, Limoges, Toulouse and Rodez) as well as the train (Paris-Toulouse line) so getting here is easy. The town is just 20 minutes west of the main A20 motorway. We would be happy to advise on your travel plans if you let us know where you will be coming from.

Ideal base for the Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

Situated in the old town we couldn't believe how quiet yet convenient the cottage was. There are a choice of eateries within 3 mins walk so ideal when you don't intend to cook. Cottage itself had all the required equipment and was newly decorated. There are two flights of stairs top to bottom so not if you are not mobile. UK TV and good WFI made it home from home.

A fantastic location, perfect if you want to visit the Dordogne and the Lot regions of France.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment which is fantastically located for all of the sights in the Lot and Dordogne regions.

The apartment was extremely clean, tastefully furnished and very well appointed for either a long or short stay.

It is easy to see why this apartment receives so many complimentary reviews.

The owners were always available to assist and help out with any information required

The only negative in the apartment is that it is very noisy below when someone is walking around the the top levels of the apartment.

The floor boards are laid straight onto the beams (no solid base) so they creak a lot and you can see daylight through them.

This is the only negative/annoyance that we had with the apartment but it would certainly not prevent us from staying in this apartment if we return to Gourdon.

Our stay in Gourdon

  • 5 of 5

We arrived for our eleven night stay to a cheery welcome from property owner Georgina.

The cottage consisting of three floors was clean, bright and well presented is situated near the top of the town with views over the surrounding countryside.

The kitchen is well equipped with full size oven/grill and four ring hob plus all the usual utensils and the added touch of a welcome pack of bread, cheese, wine, jam etc.

The hot water and heating is very effective as is the wifi which is pretty fast.

The tv has both English and French decoders.

Out side there is a small garden with table , chairs and sun loungers.

We found it the ideal base for exploring the many castles , chateaux and medieval towns nearby , and have no hesitation in recommending this property.

Lovely cottage in a quiet area of Gourdon.

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at 5 rue Marsis, a 4 bed cottage in the older part of Gourdon. One thing I did miss was not having an information pack. We knew there was a small shop and boulangerie that opened on a Sunday morning but had no idea where it was. I would have also have liked some information on places of interest and most importantly emergency contact numbers ie doctors, dentists, hospital and ambulance service. The owner, Georgina Murray, was very helpful and a delight to deal with.

Stylish accomodation, great location

  • 5 of 5

Rue Marsis is close to one of the medieval gates in Gourdons beautiful walled town. The town itself is a gem - honey coloured winding streets, ancient houses. The property itself is small, and stylish with virtually everything you might need. Accomodation is arranged over 3 floors, and has a lovely shady private outdoor space. You can walk to a lovely swimming lake from the door in 20 minutes, and the countryside and little villages are just gorgeous. The week we stayed temperatures were in the 30's, which did make the bedrooms (under the roof) very hot.

A lovely stay in in a medieval town

  • 4 of 5

We spent a week here with our 2 teenage daughters and found it an ideal spot and property with which to explore the Dordogne and surrounding areas. The property itself is situated close to the top of the old town, where stunning views can be seen from the Table D'Orientation at the very top of the town. Despite being a busy small town, the medieval part is extremely quiet, yet closely located to shops and restaurants. The property was well equipped and has a small shaded garden area which is nice for eating outside

A 25 minute drive gets you to the Dordogne river itself where there are numerous river beaches to relax and take a break from sightseeing. We would recommend the Grottes de Cougnac which are only a 5 minute drive from Gourdon and have both actual cave paintings, and interesting stalactite formations.

All in all, a very pleasant week and we would certainly return if we came back to the area

Gourdon is in the heart of the Lot and near to the Dordogne, offering countless opportunities for exploration. Rocamadour, just 40 minutes' drive away, is one of the must-see gems of this area and deservedly the second most visited religious site in France. Cahors, the departmental capital that sits on the river Lot, has winding medieval streets and one of the best markets in the region. Downstream, the river is also home to the vineyards that produce the Cahors appellation wines, renowned for their depth and body. Sarlat is a 35 minute drive and is a must-see town, with 2 weekly markets. The region has a remarkable number of prehistoric sites, medieval towns, châteaux and gardens, all set in breathtaking scenery. Gourdon's lido opens June - Sept and the local lake offers swimming and walking. Bike hire is available and there are tennis courts too. 15-30 min away it is possible to canoe on the Dordogne or to play golf at Souillac or to go horse riding. To find out more on being here, visit our website at petitgite.com.
