Historic Seafront, Magnificent Views of Grand Harbour, Valletta

This flat with balcony and huge roof terrace is «hanging» high above water edge at the seafront of the north side of Senglea Point and has absolutely stunning views of Valletta, Fort St. Angelo, Vittoriosa, the Yacht Marina and the majestic approach to The Grand Harbour with all its sailboats, fishing boats, super yachts and cruise-ships. Senglea is one of The Three Cities built by the Knights of St.John from 1524 onwards. Picturesque Senglea has charming narrow streets and lots of steps. The seafront has nice restaurants and cafés and you find local shops for all your needs. A small walk or a water-taxi (dasha) take you across the creek from Senglea (Isla) to historic Vittoriosa (Birgu) with its fine museums, elegant bars and restaurants etc.. Or you can take the frequent ferry on a short trip across the Grand Harbour to Valletta, the historic capital of Malta. An exciting ride with a modern lift is included in the fare, and brings you swiftly from the sea shore to the top of Upper Barracca Gardens, from where you can enjoy an exceptional view of the whole of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. From Senglea the local bus take you directly to Marsa Sports club for golf or tennis or into the capital Valletta for a bit of shopping, or you can take the bus to south of the Island to a beach or walk a few metres to Senglea point which is favoured by local swimmers. The apartment is equipped with WI-FI.

I was born 1947, and trained as graphic designer in London, worked as designer, writer and film critic in Norway. Stayed with my family in Italy and South Africa for some years and then took early retirement. I am now enjoying traveling and working with book projects and real estate development.

Why Morten Russell Wedén chose Malta

The apartment sits high above the water overlooking the lovely Grand Harbor and historic Valletta plus old fortresses and castles and churches all around. I knew the area for some years, and was tipped by friends when it was for sale. I bought directly from owner and has not regretted it one second. The apartment has been upgraded with a new, modern bathroom, fridge/freezer, washing machine etc., and it has now everything you would want from a holiday home. When I first saw the apartment, I immediately connected to it. I felt it was my 'home from home'. It is always like that with homes; it’s either love at first sight or there is no connection at all. This apartment is a perfect shelter, a place where you can relax completely. You can lose yourself completely by just watching the view from the balcony. No need for TV here.

What makes this apartment unique

I have mentioned the almost overwhelming view, but the little town of Senglea in itself is like and old fashioned fairytale with its narrow streets and tiny shops. The locals are extremely friendly, and since Senglea apparently is a weel kept secret, there are hardly any tourists here at all. This is a remnant of old-time Malta. Let us hope it will last...

We had a lovely holiday in Malta staying in your apartment. It was perfect for us. The cafés down on the waterfront were damn good with the ilL Hajjne , I think, being superb by any standard.

The main attraction of the flat is where it is situated, which is quite unique. We guarantee long hours on the seafront balcony overlooking the Grand Harbour day and night. The flat itself has an ordinary, good standard – nothing too fancy – apart from its location. Cosy sitting/dining room with seafront balcony, master bedroom with balcony out on quiet pedestrian street and second bedroom with window to the same. The flat is on first floor (on one side) in a three levels house, but built on old fortress foundations, so that on the seafront the flat appears to be on the 7th floor. There is a very large common roof terrace with an olive tree, plants and flowers where one can take the sun all day long. There is also clothes lines for hanging the washing, either under roof (on rainy days) or on the other side towards the pedestrian street in the sun. Stunning views you couldn't find a better location for exploring Malta

Spacious, comfortable and homely .... Decor is Shabby/Chic" ....amusing and witty. Lovely new bathroom though bedrooms are a little tired - more shabby than chic. Kitchen could be better organised and better equipped- a cafetière/ coffee jug ?

Sitting/dining room is pleasant though The lighting is in adequate for reading in the evening

Great location away from most tourists, a chance to mix with the locals.

Had our 5th visit to the island, so it was good to be in an area we hadn`t stayed before.

The last day of our holiday was "Regatta Day", on the waterfront which we could view from the roof terrace.

The apartment is rustic, but has all you need . In an area with a lot of steps, but them that is Malta.

Local shops & eateries all within a few hundred yds.

The stunning views is what it is all about.

We stayed in the appartment for 2 weeks.

Why do we give this appartment 4 stars ?

Is i because of the appartment itself ? No, it is rather old with old furnitures. But there is a nice doubblebed and at nice bathroom with a shower.

What makes this appartment so special is the place, where the appartment is situated. Right in the center of the old part of Valletta/Senglea.

It is quiet and the views of the harbour magnificent.

There is a little ferry just 7 minutes walk away, and that ferry will take you to Valletta in just 5-10 minutes, and then you are right in the center of it all. Or you can walk to the bus center i just 5 minutes and jump on a bus.

We enjoyed our stay.

Real taste of Malta

After this visit we love Malta and for sure will come back! The flat is ideally situated – in the old, quiet part with really amazing view of Valetta and Harbour and has its unique spirit. So evenings in the living room were very nice and relaxing. Renovated bathroom also nice and comfortable. The quality of bedrooms rather low, furniture old and not useful at all. For us it wasn’t a big issue, because living room with its view compensated all the inconvenience, but small improvements in bedrooms could make a stay more comfortable.

It's all about the view!

Can only concur with earlier compliments... some of the furniture, especially the wardrobes, looks as if it was collected from ancient relatives, and the kitchen will never make it to a luxury fittings brochure... but it all works, and the shower room is brand new.

The main point though is that, at least in our opinion, this flat is in just about the best spot in Malta, and the balcony off the large living room brings the views of that best spot right indoors with you. This was our third visit to Malta, the Three Cities were already our favorite and in fact this visit was partly to look at properties for sale in the area. The trouble was that none of the ones we saw compared with this flat!

So we are now planning to rent it again next year..

Owner's Response: You are most welcome back! I totally agree with everything you said. I have always thought that visiting Malta – and in particular Senglea – is like being admitted into a time capsule from the 1950s and 1960s. And the flat reflects that in fact in its peculiar imperfect way. This feeling is slowly fading with the passing of the old yellow buses, the vintage cars and the Maltese Pounds – but looking out onto the Grand Harbour the whole long history of the place feels very real indeed. Yes, it is easy to fall in love with the place – and it is enough love there to go around!

Fantastic location, despite a few downsides

There are lot of very good things about this apartment:

First is the view from the living room balcony looking across Grand Harbour (50 feet above water level!) and viewing the whole of Valletta. In six weeks here we never tired of looking at it, and taking an interest in the ships that come in and out the harbour. Second is the location, in a quiet ‘real life Malta’ street in Senglea/Isla. Apart from odd day trippers looking around the ‘three cities’, you hardly see another non-Maltese person in the vicinity. All the local folk were very friendly and helpful, and there are many lovely pedestrian-only streets and stairways to walk around, including the one this apartment is located in. Third, it is pretty spacious for four people (not sure about six), with the added advantage of a shared roof space two floors up (usable even some of the time in the winter). Fourth, it has pretty much all your need: nice modern shower room (always hot water), OK kitchen with modern washing machine and fridge freezer, heaters in every room for the winter months (even the shower room). Fifth, it is well located for Valletta (either half hour bus or 10 minute ferry) and for much of the southern half of the island; longer journey up to the north (ferry terminal for Gozo nearly two hours via Valletta by bus). Sixth, the beds were comfortable, and even in the colder winter we have just had, the duvets were very warm.

There are downsides:

Although one bedroom is spacious with balcony etc., the other is only half the size, and beds for three people take up nearly all the floor space. It is also not nicely equipped, feeling more like a utility room. Second, although the living room is large, there is barely comfortable seating for four people, so we spent half our time seated around the dining table. Third, the kitchen felt ‘tired’ and composed of a rather motley collection of bits and pieces.

You may or may not like the décor and ‘feel’ of the place. To us it felt like someone’s granny had just moved out, most things dating from about 50 years ago. The owner (in previous feedback) has acknowledged that this is not a ‘luxury’ apartment (a fact reflected in the price), despite what the nice photos might lead you to believe, and we think that’s right. The whole place feels a little idiosyncratic.

But you will forgive this place a lot, for the sake of the good points. Initially disappointed, we really liked the place by the time we left. We would come back.
