Giacomina and Giuseppina are two romantic, self-catering, studio flats in the converted stone barn, with independent entrances to the raised ground floor. Entrance, kitchenette & bathroom with window, under the sleeping gallery & on into the double-height living room with huge picture window which looks onto woodland and mountains beyond. Free-sat TV & DVD player. There is a double Sofa-Bed in the living space for use by a fourth and fifth person. Open-tread stairs up to the sleeping gallery above, which has a single bed and a large double bed that can be converted into two singles if desired. Ideal for a couple but will sleep a family of 5. The conversion has retained the ancient wooden roof but fully insulated it. The original stone is visible internally, in zones where insulation has not been added. Heating and hot water are provided by the 'sustainable energy' biomass boiler in the main house, but each dwelling has thermostatiic control.
Conveniently located 10km from the 'Rioveggio' exit of the A1 motorway, backbone to Italy, between Bologna and Florence, 6Stanco is situated at the beginning of the Apennine mountain range on the southern slope of Monte Stanco, with stunning mountain views towards Tuscany. Set in the intimate village of 'Stanco', 6Stanco is a group of stone buildings surrounding a courtyard, originally the main landowner's home, private chapel, barn and haywain, residence of their farm workers and harvesters. Refurbished in 2011, the converted chestnut-drying barn, Olimpia, is a three-bedroomed independant villa, beside the garden and the 5x11m pool, completed in 2013. Giacomina and Giuseppina are the two mirror-image, studio flats on the raised ground floor of the converted haywain and cattle stalls, each with its own balconied entrance. We can accommodate groups of friends or extended families for unforgettable holidays! We live most of the year in the restored main stone house; also a Bed & Breakfast with three double rooms available.
The lower level of the Haywain is the 60sq.m Course Room; adjacent to the main sun terrace. There is Horse riding at our local Pegasus Riding Stables and trekking for seasoned riders. At 600m.a.s.l. no air-conditioning is necessary here and the mountain panorama is breathtaking.

About Ruth Hodkinson
We probably watched too many 'buy a ruin and do it up ' television programmes, but that's what we chose to do, left the big city and now we live most of the year in the community of this small mountain village.
Ruth, an architect by profession, was born and educated in London, UK. Andrea is Bolognese and is a Restaurant food company director. We have two daughters and a son. We like good food, wine and when not travelling, at least planning and discussing the next trip!
Ruth Hodkinson purchased this barn in 2005
Why Ruth Hodkinson chose Bologna
Beautiful, stylish, comfortable and well-equipped stone buildings. New, modern convenience but with architectural character where you can relax and enjoy yourselves. Situated in a safe, peaceful village with friendly locals and very helpful hosts next door! New swimming pool and plenty of space for al fresco dining, sun bathing or just reading a book in the garden. Only 12 minutes to the closest motorway exit which is between Bologna and Florence so very well-located for daytrips all over Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, even as far as Venice. The perfect combination of cultural visits to a variety of important Art Cities, or more low-key trips locally, by day, then coming back to your beautiful 6Stanco apartment each evening to cooler, balmier temperatures, after a sometimes stiflingly-hot, inner-city visit in mid-summer, with no need for air-con here, breath-taking sunsets across the Reno valley, less noise than the bustling towns and cities and easy parking! Unforgettably fantastic holidays!
What makes this barn unique
Our complimentary, weekly, summer dinners under the ancient grapevine in the company of the other interesting guests. Animated by master funster, Andrea. Relaxing in a private homestead and garden, not a huge impersonal complex, with the new pool in 2013. Regional cookery, English, Yoga, Painting, Massage, Horse-riding and Ceramics courses can be offered: We run English language courses in June and September, Ceramics is available if requested at time of booking and Johann runs a Painting Course every September. The local 'Nel Castagneto' restaurant runs a regional cookery demonstration course each week, usually a Tuesday afternoon, throughout the summer. Hatha Yoga and Massage can be organized in the summer if requested at the time of your booking. Our shared, inside- knowledge of the best places to visit in this relatively un-tourist-trodden area, plus what to avoid when you day-trip further afield.
IMPORTANT: Rental rates are for use of the apartment by TWO people on the sleeping gallery. €15 nightly supplement for first and second child, €10 nightly supplement for a third child, up to full capacity of a family of FIVE will be added to the rental rate. 50% of the total rental tariff is required as a non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. Your balance is then to be settled 10 days before arrival if booking online or on the day of arrival, if settling your balance by debit/credit card here via our POS machine. Saturday is the changeover day in the summer. Optional final cleaning service of Euro30 to be paid once here. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for holiday quotes of more than a week.

A week in a mountain paradise
Our week at the Olympia Villa at 6Stanco was one we'll never forget. Ruth welcome our party ,which consisted of two couples with a small child each, with plenty of information of the local area and a cake! The accommodation is situated in a picturesque mountain town with views all around. The villa suited us perfectly with a well equipped kitchen and our courtyard acted as the perfect play area for the two children. (19 & 16 months old) The pool was a great place to unwind and with the mountain air cooling in the evening, there was never any trouble sleeping in the very comfortable beds.
All in all I cannot say enough about 6Stanco, I hope to return one day.

August stay in 6Stanco
This place is wonderful. The three of us had a split holiday here, spending four nights in the B and B (wonderful rooms, delicious al fresco breakfasts), then we spent a night in Rome, followed by three nights back at 6Stanco in Giacomina. We were made to feel so welcome, not just by Ruth and Andrea, but by the entire community. The facilities here are of a very high standard. There are wonderful restaurants nearby (Nel Castangeto serves delicious local cuisine and is run by the most delightful English speaking local lady). The weather was perfect - sunny and warm, but due to the altitude, not too hot. The new pool is perfect for families. We got lucky with our week of stay - it was the annual village "Fete" week and there were lots of additional things going on, but I'd recommend a visit there any time.
The hosts could not have been more accommodating and the setting is simply idylic.
Stunning setting and top quality accommodation.
We were most impressed at the standard of 6 Stanco. The owner made us feel very welcome. The kids loved the pool and each evening was just lovely sitting out relaxing after our meal. If you are looking for a holiday of just relaxation in a picture postcard setting then look no further.
My friend and I had a wonderful time in 6Stanco in June. Beautiful surroundings, a friendly village a litle bit down the hill, impeccable and comfortable accomodation and above all, very hospitable hosts. There's plenty to do in the surroundings, but the accomodation was also very convenient for those who favour lazy afternoons by the pool... A very agreeable and highly recommended experience!
One week in June ( a couple from Finland)

6Stanco: convenient, stylish and very welcoming
We (Dutch family, 1 child) had a wonderful time @6Stanco end of july 2011. The Giuseppina apartment is very clean and well furnished. Enough space for a small family (we even had 2 extra lodgers on our last night on the upper sleeping gallery). New and luxury sanitary facilities. The sleeping sofa in the living room functions extremely well both as sofa AND as bed. The owners Ruth and Andrea have create a very welcoming atmosphere and are very helpful. The joint dinner on Thursday evening was very enjoyable.
Grizzana Morandi is a nice small village and a good operating base for trips to Bologna, Ravenna + Adriatic coast and Tuscany. Lots of challenging climbs for cyclists in the direct surroundings.
We have enjoyed our stay in Grizzana Morandi !

Activity and Interests
Between Bologna and Florence there are now two motorways to choose from. Our exit 'Rioveggio', lies on the Firenze - Rioveggio PANORAMICO branch not the new DIRETTISSIMA Firenze -Badia branch - which you should avoid.
The village of Stanco, GPS coordinates: n44d 14,790; e11d 08,200: is at an altitude of 600m and lies on the southern slope of Monte Stanco, offering wonderful panoramic views towards Tuscany and spectacular terrain for hiking or cycling. Only a ten minute walk away is the pretty medieval village of Stanco di Sotto, followed by the Pegasus Riding stables which offers great pony-treks or walks in the paddock for beginners. The town of Grizzana is on the boundary of the Regional Historical Park of Monte Sole, also home to wild boar, red deer, fallow deer & hare. There are specific Hunting seasons.
The museum-house of the painter, Giorgio Morandi, exhibiting some paintings in his summer studio, is at the ‘Fienili del Campiaro’ on the outskirts of Grizzana where there is also the restaurant of the same name. Grizzana also boasts the restaurant 'Il Crinale' and Trattoria at Bar Pina for lunch everyday.
Immediately to the south of Stanco are Montovolo & Monte Vigese in the Provincial Park of Montovolo. At Riola ponte, not to be missed is the newly renovated and opened, fascinating, eclectic castle of ROCCHETTA MATTEI. On the way to Monteacuto Ragazza, a 5 minute drive then 10 minute walk, is the site where Etruscan bronze statuettes were recovered, now housed in the Archaeological museum of Bologna. A 25 minute drive away lies the intact, medieval village of Scola with ancient Cypress tree, en route to the Church Sanctuary at the top of Montovolo. Beyond lies the Regional Park of Lakes Suviana and Brasimone, good for picnics and splashing around, then the Regional Park of Corno alle Scale. Good 'outlet shopping' three exits south on the A1 motorway at Barberino di Mugello, in Tuscany.
Other Activities: Montepizzo adventure park - climbing-ropes-pulley agility course up in the trees. Vidiciatico leisure pool with beautiful view. Guglielmo Marconi laboratory & museum
Golf: 'Molino del Pero' 18- hole Golf Course at Monzuno, approximately 25km from 6Stanco and about 35 minutes by car.
Ski: 'Corno alle scale' ski resort lies just above Vidiciatico, in the Bologna area, deeper into the Apennine range. It takes almost an hour to reach by car from 6stanco but is a beautiful journey with postcard views. You can buy day passes at the booths on the slopes and rent equipment too.
Marzabotto: 30mins drive to Misa, the Etruscan site, now with small intimate museum of Etruscan and Greek artefacts and temple ruins on the acropolis and tombs in the necropolis.
Riola di Vergato. Sole Architectural work in Italy of Alvar Aalto's Church. Modern but spiritual. The Rocchetta Mattei; 19th century castle / Neo-Medieval folly with references to the Alhambra plus some Russian minarets thrown in, on the original site of a medieval defence tower.
Labante: Spring water and waterfall which has over time deposited an amazing rock formation and grottoes
Local towns worth visiting: Castiglione dei Pepoli, Porretta Terme and Castel di Casio. A lot of the architectural heritage of Vergato and Sasso Marconi was lost during the second World War.
