Monna is an ancient Tuscan farmhouse sitting in a completely unspoilt valley in the Massa Marittima Forests less than an hour away from Siena, Pisa and the wonderful Thyrrenean coast, making it a perfect base for exploring the 3 provinces. At the same time Monna offers its guests a perfect base for a truly relaxing holiday thanks to a most charming swimming pool, great breeze throughout the summer and very welcoming live-in hosts. Monna offers its guests 2 independent apartments, a 15x8 mt swimming pool, a large open air BBQ area for your parties and a playground for your children. The house is particularly indicated for families with children and extended family reunions.

COLLINE METALLIFERE: Coming to the COLLINE METALLIFERE is taking a journey back in time through geysers, intriguing ghost copper mines, Etruscan fortresses, thermal spas and perfectly preserved medieval hamlets vibrant with community life.

The name originates from the geological composition of the rocks which are rich in metals. Records dating back to Etruscan times witness the deep relationship this people has had with the land and its nature.

The love and respect for the natural composition of this land, together with the wit and ingenuity have led to a perfect balance between exploiting the land and preserving its beauty.

Sustained by copper and alum mining first, geothermal energy production and farming now, the Colline Metallifere have remained an undiscovered pearl in one of the most visited regions of Europe.

Its beauty lies mainly in the varied landscape which spans from gentle hills to rugged valleys dotted with crags and geysers, cattle grazing free amidst sunflower and corn fields.

CASTELNUOVO: Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina is a small village in the Colline Metallifere, sitting on the offshoots of the Maremma overlooking the Tirrenean sea and the Isle of Elba. Its origins date back to the Lombard period (VII c), witnessed by a number of fortresses - still standing in the area - which the Lombards built when opening new roads in search for minerals between Volterra and Massa Marittima. The area around Castelnuovo is rich in archaeological sites of the neolithic, etruscan, barbaric and medieval periods. The landscape is characterized by gentle hills, except the Devil’s Yard reaching 875 mts. Besided the River Cecina, the region is crossed by the Cornia stream that springs here and by tributaries of the Cecina, the Pavone and the Possera being the most important ones. The woods are thick and the vegetation ranges from the Mediterranean scrub – pine trees, junipers, English oaks, strawberry trees – to the typical Appennine vegetation with turkey oaks, hornbeam, ashes, chestnuts.

Schönes Haus mit schönem Ausblick

  • 5 of 5

Relaxing stay in the Tuscan countryside

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our holidays at Monna! We had the opportunity to stay in both apartments. The first week we stayed in the bigger apartment together with my parents in law. The other two weeks we rented the smaller apartment to find accomodation for my wife, our kids and myself.

Everything has positive and negative sides. On the negative side, we only need comment the driving distances. As the apartments are situated in the middle of the Tuscan countryside, getting anywhere takes quite a while.

All other aspects of our stay were very good. We enjoyed the peace of the countryside, it allowed us to really rest our minds. Our kids liked strolling around the former farmhouse, spotting animals and picking blackberries. They enjoyed the walking tours in the vicinity, discovering small villages and the thermal springs that are famous for this area. But most of all, our kids enjoyed the large and clean swimming pool.

Furthermore, we found everything we needed during our holidays. The apartments are equipped economically, but all we needed was available. More important: The apartments were very clean and the owners were very nice.

Overall, we would definitely recommend this facility to everybody who would like to make a relaxing stay in the countryside.

Heaven for childern and adults

  • 5 of 5

We 'd had a fabulous evening meal at Monna, sitting under the oak tree looking out across the valley and counting shooting stars. All we could hear were the odd grunts and snuffles of wild boar - or cingali - down in the woods. We struck up a conversation in wonderful "Englitalian" with Marcello as he was locking up his shed. The children were fascinated by the wild boar and Marcello offered to try spotting them, having explained about the hunting and local meats. He got his torch and we all walked down the path as he shone the beam around the bushes and woods and across the fields trying to pick them out. The Englitalian conversation , complete with many hand gestures and expressions, moved on to thermal springs and agricutural as we crept around the grounds. Well, we didnt see any cingali ! But it was a great evening that we will all always remember - simple, homely, with new friends and in a beautiful setting.

Oh, and in the morning, the pool was surrounded by cingali hoof marks - so it wasn't a dream!
