About the property

Sleeps 2 within easy reach of the Adriatic coast & the Sibillini mountains

Il Pascolo is a recently renovated farmhouse typical of the area (now with all modern conveniences), situated between the hill towns of San Ginesio and Colmurano. It is set in a peaceful and pleasantly rolling landscape, enjoying relaxing panoramic views. Its location gives you the opportunity to experience the many and varied delights of the area, from the high mountains and plains of the Sibillini National Park, through the many fortified hill towns, to the beaches of the Adriatic coast.

The spacious self catering apartment has its own entrance via a traditional external staircase and consists of hallway, large double bedroom, open plan lounge/kitchen/diner and shower room. The accommodation is ideal for couples. Situated as it is on the first floor, the views from the apartment are glorious.

Guests are invited to share with us and enjoy the newly landscaped and planted one acre garden and our 9m x 4.5m pool.

The apartment has its own private patio/pergola, the perfect place to enjoy a morning cafe or evening glass of wine, dine al fresco, or simply contemplate the stunning panorama with the ribbon road winding away to the west and the incredible sunset views.

We are both keen gardeners and happy to provide our guests with whatever herbs and fresh vegetables are in season in our orto.

There is ample parking.

You can see more of the house and area on Jos' facebook page by searching Casagatti.

About David Cooper

Formerly an Art and Design lecturer in further and higher education.

I now live, paint and garden both here in Italy and in rural West Wales with my partner Jocelyne ( Jos ) who still works part-time as a tribunal judge in the UK.

David Cooper purchased this apartment in 2005

Why David Cooper chose Macerata

Jos and I discovered the property back in 2004 when we were staying with friends nearby. At the time it was a ruin, used only as a sheepshed by our neighbour who made and continues to make wonderful Pecorino cheese. We were immediately attracted to this changing rural landscape with its uninterrupted 360 degree view and, most importantly for us, stunning sunset views to the west.

We were both excited by the idea of a major renovation project and our intention was to have this as a future home for ourselves, inviting friends and family to enjoy it with us. The lifestyle here in the hills of Le Marche is relaxed and easy but we are also in easy reach of the Adriatic coast and the Sibillini National Park. Inevitably there were ups and downs along the way but we have never regretted our choice and the rewards living in Contrada Casagatti brings. Jos loves growing fruit and veg in a Mediterranean climate (a far cry from the rain of West Wales) and walking in the Sibillini mountains. Dave finds stimulation for his art work just walking out of the door..

We would be delighted to share our Italian home with you..

What makes this apartment unique

We have carefully retained the original character of the building with its unique and traditional features, keeping as much of the original timber and stonework as possible.

The sensitively designed landscaping of the garden and pool aims to blend the house harmoniously with its surroundings and make the most of the wonderful 360 degree views. You can enjoy the panorama whether swimming in the pool or relaxing next to it, dining on your private patio or within the privacy of your own apartment.

Our Fantastic Italian experience!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time here in August with our 2 children. Off the beaten track, peaceful and beautiful location - just how we like it. Accomodation as already mentioned was, clean, comfortable and well equipped. The surrounding villages (often hidden in the hills) provided plenty for us to explore.

Very helpful and knowledgable owners.

Favourite restaurants - the one with an incredible view at S Angela in Pontano and Pippo & Gabriella.

Favourite places included the castle at Caldorola, the Medieval celebrations in San Genesio, swimming in Lake Fiastra and driving/walking in the spectacular national park surrounding it.

The highlight of our days was coming back to Il Pascolo to cool off in the pool, relax in front of the amazing view with a glass of local Verdiccio. A car is a must, but if you love freedom to roam in unspoilt beautiful Italian countryside and all it has to offer, with a very comfortable base, I would definitely recommend it.

Lovely refurbished (& re-strengthened) old farmhouse in beautiful countryside.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful 11 day stay in September with warm sunny weather which allowed us to fully enjoy the good-size swimming pool & garden. The accomodation comprises a comfortable spacious one (double) bed first floor flat with great views in all directions. The kitchen area is very well equipped & we cooked many evening meals there.

The property is very well situated between two lovely old hill-top towns and there are many other interesting towns & villages within a 25 k radius. We found plenty of places to visit & things to do. There are many decent restaurants within around 12 k. In addition there are the beautiful Sibillini mountains to explore 45 minutes away.

The only slight negative we have regarding the property & our stay is the long quite steep unmade road to the house which needs to be driven with care.

But all in all we would thoroughtly recommend the property & the wonderfully helpful owners to other travellers and we certainly hope to return before too long.

It's been five times now that we stayed at Il Pascolo in the hills around San Ginesio.

It's the perfect holiday apartment : the house is well equipped and from your private pergola you enjoy the most wonderful views as the house is situated in the midst of the hills. With Macerata nearby and the beaches and mountainside within reasonable driving distance there's really everything to please the most exacting holiday makers. Warmly recommended.

Owner's Response: Our guests have returned again and again, a strong friendship has evolved which we feel is a valuable and very pleasurable extension to our home in Italy.

Our first holiday in Le Marche could not have been more delightful and magical than in this “little paradise”. We had a fantastic week in splendid “isolation” in this cosy apartment, with an overwhelming surrounding, breathtaking views, the perfect swimming pool and the warm hospitality of our host, David. Surely to be repeated, if it depends on us!

We enjoyed two beautiful sun soaked serenely quiet weeks in this beautiful part of the world.

The apartment was exactly what we needed, a capacious bedroom with double aspect and the equally voluminous lounge, kitchen diner with double aspect were very comfortable. The bathroom was perfect too.

We spent many nights under our private pergola enjoying a BBQ of local meat and watching the stunning sunsets whilst having a glass of excellent wine.

The pool and surrounding area was a joy and the water temperature (between 22-26 degrees) was enjoyed throughout the 2 weeks and a welcome respite from the 30+ degrees of the days.

The views of the surrounding hills and the Sibilini mountains in the distance were sublime. The views changed throughout the day with the shadows and 800 photographs are testament to the beauty of Le Marche.

The whole area and especially the mountains takes your breath away, the numerous hill top towns are well worth exploring. The Sibilnis are within 30 minutes drive with lots of hiking opportunities from gentle walks to hikes for the more advanced and adventurous. After a long and twisting drive the sight of the Piano Grande is quite surreal and starkly beautiful - well worth the trip. The local lakes with their facilities are well worth a visit too. The beaches of the Adriatic are worth a day trip. We especially enjoyed the town of Sirolo and its beaches.

The people are very friendly and the waiters and waitresses helped when our (very) bad Italian wasn't up to par.

Dave is a perfect host, he is very generous with his time, his knowledge and his tomatoes.

We enjoyed this holiday so much and urge anyone looking for a relaxing time to enjoy Le Marche this fabulous apartment and Daves hospitality.

Perfect Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in July 2011 and had an amazing time. This place was just perfect for a week of complete relaxation, the apartment is very comfortable and spacious (there were 3 of us but can easily sleep 4), the pool is so beautiful and just the thing you need to cool down in the heat but the most incredible thing is the views, the VIEWS from every window, from the pool and from the private pergola, where we relaxed with a glass of wine and dinner watching the sunset every night pinching ourselves because it felt too beautiful to be real!

The location is great, remote but still close to a number of small hilltop towns where you can eat at amazingly cheap delicious restaurants and if you are lucky catch a local festival or two...

FInally, the place that really makes this place stand out is Dave the owner, from the bottle of cold wine in our fridge when we arrived to the going out with us to the local festival, his hospitality means that any ask is easily accommodated and makes this a truly memorable place to holiday!

The apartment at Il Pascolo is very well placed to explore the natural, cultural and culinary diversity of the region. The Sibillini National Park, just a few miles from our apartment, provides year round activities, from skiing in winter snows, to walking, cycling and horse riding. There is a wonderful succession of wildflowers in the mountains from early spring to summer and the strips of colour in June on the high plain of the Piano Grande when the lentils and other crops come into flower in June are a sight not to miss. You can swim in the clear waters of Lake Fiastra or take a relaxing traffic free drive to experience the best views in central Italy with a new hilltop town to explore every few miles.

A great day out combines the wonders of the Frasassi caves, the largest underground vault in Europe, with wining and dining in the town of Matelica, renowned for its Verdicchio wine.

Longer days out might be a trip to one of the beautiful towns of Ascoli Piceno, Urbino, Perugia or across the Appenines into some of the jewels of Umbria such as Spello, Spoleto or Assissi.

Macerata hosts its open air opera season at the Sferisterio . The Abbadia di Fiastra and the remains of the Roman town of Urbs Salvia are both close by.

The coastline offers variety from the beautiful cliff edged Conero Peninsula and picturesque Sirolo and Numana to the clean well managed sunbathing beaches with their fish restaurants and bars.

Designer shopping outlets from local manufacturers add a further dimension.

Restaurants offering locally produced food and wine are within easy reach, as are markets, shops and supermarkets.

Not to mention the many festas, at least weekly through the spring and summer months. Our nearest town of Colmurano has a busking festival over four days in July when the small piazzas are filled with music and dance from international performance artists. Both San Ginesio and Sarnano have annual medieval festas featuring archery and jousting tournaments. The festa at Loro Piceno in September celebrates the locally produced vino cotto. These are just a few examples. And at every festa you can expect to dine al fresco in the piazzas on long trestles set up for the occasion.

Or why not join the locals for an evening or late night ice cream?

We are happy to advise on what is happening in the area at any particular time, places to go, routes to follow etc. Please don't hesitate to ask.
