About this property

Restored stone house in country, fully equipped, beautiful views

A French holiday/vacation in a restored 19th Century farm house at Camphinie in South West France. This stylish comfortable home sleeps 6 to 8 people and lends itself to fabulous family outdoor entertaining and leisurely meals with family and friends with two spectacular terraces offering panoramic views over the French countryside.
Between the Dordogne and Lot Valleys of Les Causses National Heritage region close to the historic villages of St Cirque Lapopee, Rocamadour, Sarlat, LaBastide Murat and Gourdon to name a few. A region steeped in history with many activities such as boating on the Dordogne River, cycling, forest walks and markets at the ancient roman town of Cahors in the Lot Valley. Easy motor access from Toulouse Blagnac Airport.
On an acre of land and completely independent but 0,5km to the ancient village of Soulomes, this 19th Century 150m2 stone house was restored in 2007 to create a fully equipped, self-catering, furnished and comfortable space and at the same time retain the original form of the farmhouse.
The house is built on 3 levels on a steep slope and consists of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms/WC's and a study/library which can serve as a 4th bedroom. Each bedroom contains a large double bed (160cm) that can be split to form 2 single beds. An open plan kitchen and large 8 seater dining room table and sitting room face onto the large original working fireplace. An 80m2 outside terrace provides striking views over the surrounding countryside and spectacular sunsets. Camphinie is tranquil and beautiful and the many activities, walks, sport, culture and history, food and wine and interests in the surrounding country, villages and towns all combine to make this the perfect holiday destination.
It is a wonderful family holiday venue, and would also suit groups of friends who either want a quiet and restful vacation in beautiful surroundings or it is great for active holidays with many varied activities in the area and places to explore.
Being on a acre of land, with a beautiful meadow there is plenty of space for ball games and sports and recreation.
The terrace overlooks a deep valley with views extending for many km;s which means that it is ideal for evening barbecues or leisurely cocktails in beautiful surroundings.
The house is tastefully decorated with several items of furniture and artworks that were carefully selected. The kitchen is well equipped with a large comfortable dining room table as well as a large 'banquet' table on the terrace outside.

Pastoral paradise
This tastefully appointed house was very accurately depicted on the website and spotlessly clean. It is the perfect place for a very peaceful family holiday in a beautiful, undulating rural setting. The golden sunshine on the pretty terraces, endless views and wonderful walks were particularly memorable. We also loved our visit to Saint--Cirque-Lapopie in the picturesque Lot valley. All in all, a most enjoyable stay!

Fantastic house in an absolutely stunning setting!
We have just spent two weeks in this lovely house. We had five adults staying here and there was plenty of room. The layout of the house gives lots of privacy with the bedrooms all being on separate floors and two of them en-suite. There was everything you needed to be able to cook each night (which we did). Bed linen and towels were all provided and beds were made for arrival. The setting of the house is stunning and extremely peaceful. Woken up each morning by sheep or the birds singing!! It was fantastic to sit out on the veranda until 10pm in the evening looking at the views and watching the beautiful sunset. The owners were very helpful from the day we booked right through till the day we left. Always available by phone or email although we did not need to contact them during our stay as you are told everything prior to arrival. Neighbours were available if we needed any help. I would highly recommend this property for your holiday especially if you love the Dordogne/Lot area as it is so central for everything.

Perfect Country Holiday
We enjoyed a wonderful stay in this very well equipped and charming home. It is close to the nearby town of La Bastide Murat, complete with bakeries for hand made croissants and bread and charcuteries for pasture reared meats. The house is beautifully furnished and very comfortable with a sunny terrace and a stunning views over the surrounding hills and fields. Perfect for lazy afternoon lunches stretching through to sunsets that will take your breath away. The customer service was excellent and the property exceeded all our expectations, and I would defiantly recommend it! There are many nearby towns and villages and if you go during the summer you can enjoy driving down the leafy lanes to the nearby Fetes and Brocantes.

Dream Home
Our holiday at Camphinie was one of the best we've ever had. The house is elegantly designed, making the most of the original stone walls and beams, complemented with exquisite contemporary details. At Camphinie we immediately felt at home and settled into a routine of walking or cycling to the village for fresh bread and croissants in the morning followed by a walk, picnic or a visit to one of the markets or extraordinary towns in the area for the day. On many of the days we merely stayed at the house to enjoy the beautiful views and read and enjoy some of the delicious local food and wine. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, stylish and comfortable furnishings and wonderful clean linen. Camphinie was a real treat and we will definitely be going back.

About the host

My wife is an interior decorator and I am a commercial property consultant. We have 2 daughters, one an architect and the other an artist. We live and work in Johannesburg, South Africa and since 1991 we have been annually visiting this part of France, always with friends and parents because we enjoy the quiet countryside and the many villages within easy reach. My brother, who is a headmaster at a well known school in Scotland, his wife Michelle, daughter and son have a house very similar to ours close by called Nougayrol, and it was to this house that we visited frequently before acquiring our own, Camphinie. As a family we enjoy going on interesting holidays whether to the wilderness of southern Africa, ('bushveld'), or to quiet and remote coastal regions or walking in the mountains. We are English speaking and do speak a bit of French, we have got to know our neighbours who farm the fields surrounding the house, and we enjoy meeting our friends at Soulomes and Labastide Murat.

Why they chose this property

We especially love this part of South West France for its quiet rural setting and its historic heritage. We have had many wonderful family holidays here with visits to local markets, acquiring excellent food ingredients and preparing wonderful meals into the long Summer evenings.
In August 2006 on one of our regular visits to my brother's family at Nougayrol, Soulomes, we started looking at houses for ourselves close by. We met with the Mayor of Soulomes, a great character of the area, and it was through him that we were directed to Camphinie. Built in the 1850's and similar to many farmhouses in the area, the house immediately attracted us for its beauty and position and especially its magnificent views, it was in good structural condition with thick stone walls and ancient solid oak beams supporting a very sound roof, but it only had 1 of everything, 1 toilet, 1 light switch, 1 electric plug and 1 door. In 2007 a young architect and craftsman friend, James Mudge (see his website www.jamesmudge.co.za), agreed to move in and restore the house for us and make it capable of becoming a holiday house. James was taken by the place and did an amazing job, not just restoring the house, but also adding accommodation, and creating a place of beauty out of ancient materials. It took him a year and many visits on Paula and my part all the way from South Africa. Our house, Camphinie now has the character and look of the many and interesting villages in the Region. In the Summer there is a lot going on, each village takes its turn to host a market, which we like to explore, there are so many small villages, and for our daughters and their friends there is always a bar or party nearby. The house comprises 3 levels with wooden staircases between. It is built on a steep slope in an acre of garden which comprises dry stone walls, fruit trees and and pleasant and private meadow.

What makes this property unique

The house was carefully restored with the objective that it would be rented out. So all the fittings are of a good quality, Rosiere stove and AEG dishwasher, large fridge, large fireplace. While it is a great holiday destination, it is also ideal for a long stay because it is quiet and would suit someone wanting to escape the rush and busy side of city life, or for someone on sabbatical wishing to research the heritage of the area, or a writer requiring quiet time.
