About the property

A recently upgraded 5 bedroom family villa with private pool and sea views

A beautiful home in a stunning, secluded location. This recently refurbished detached property is nestled in the hills rising up from the coast in the exclusive region of Nadadouro in Foz Do Arelho on Portugal’s Silver Coast with magnificent views of Obidos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The gentle roar of the distant breaking waves provides a natural accompaniment to evening meals on the terrace. This lovely 5-bedroom villa provides the perfect base from which to relax, explore Portugal’s splendid silver coast, partake in a range of exhilarating water-sport activities or play a round of golf on some of the most exciting and new developments in Europe. The villa and surrounding area is perfect for families or groups of friends looking for a luxurious holiday at any time of year.

Surfing: The beaches along the Silver Coast provide some of the best surfing conditions in the world and the owner can arrange tailor made surfing trips with tuition and equipment, if required.

Watersports: The Villa lies 500 m from the local sailing club which can provide equipment and lessons for kite surfing, sailing, windsurfing, wake boarding and canoeing.

Families: The beaches are suitable for small children and families because not all face the Atlantic ocean. In Foz Do Arelho, there is a free children's club on the beach in July and August.

About David Edwin

Myself and my wife live in Edinburgh with 2 small boys aged 9 and 7. We bought our home in Foz Do Arelho because it was close to some breathtaking beaches, there are range of activities for the kids to do, it is less commercialised than the Algarve and the house was in a fantastic location. We spend 3 or 4 weeks at the villa every year and enjoy it more and more. The boys are now accomplished surfers

David Edwin purchased this villa in 2008

The property was spacious well equipped and very comfortable, very clean and well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

This was a lovely home to stay in. When we arrived following an early flight we were welcomed with fresh rolls, cheese, milk which was very much appreciated. We really enjoyed our stay here. We were two families sharing and there was ample room and everything we could have needed for a comfortable stay. This house is very well equipped for eating at home, great barbecue and lots of outdoor seating with sheltered options if it gets a bit windy. It's also beautifully located with great views over the lagoon and easy access to Foz and all it has to offer. Even the fact that there was construction work underway in a nearby property didn't take from our stay here as the builders were very considerate and the owner gave us some great tips about where to go and to eat. Highly recommend the Snack Bar near Obidos, it's a gem. The sailing school, which is in walking distance of the property , rents kayaks etc, great way to spend a couple of hours out on the lagoon. Super friendly staff and great little cafe. There is lots to see and do in the area but if it all gets a bit much relaxing by the pool is a very pleasant option. I would highly recommend this property.

  • 5 of 5

Well maintained property perfect for our 'all ages 'holiday - grandparents daughters and their families ages ranging 11- 75.good cooking facilities ,dishwasher and barbecue also dishwasher and washing machine which were in constant use.Lots of eating places at reasonable prices nearby.Pool was great after busy day at beach whist grandparents relaxed on the wonderful loungers before a game of table tennis in the basement .all in all had wonderful relaxing time in this still underdeveloped area.

Nice villa with lovely views

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice villa with plenty of space, reasonably well equipped although some of the furniture indoors is a little tired. Great barbecue area. The views across the lagoon are spectacular and we spent many relaxing hours by the pool or on the huge veranda. Lots to do in the area and lovely swimming in the lagoon at the beach down in Foz. The villa is in a residential area up the hill from the lagoon - the location shown on the map on the Homeaway website does not match where the villa actually is, and there are no restaurants or bars within walking distance. Very peaceful holiday though.

Nice house, but lacking in some areas (would give it 3.5 stars, but that isn't available)

  • 3 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our holiday. The house was good in most aspects, but there was a lack of attention to detail. The pool is small and quite shallow compared to the impression given by the photos. It is not really suitable for anything other than a dip and messing around in.

We were disappointed at the lack of information provided at the house. Most places have a folder with recommendations of restaurants and places to go. This place only had tourist information leaflets. We would have ended up missing some places if it hadn't been for the instructor from the surf school and checking out the web sites of other local holiday homes that had more information about place to go and things to do.

It was also unclear as to who managed the house and who to contact if something went wrong. The woman we were given the details of seemed to think she was only to be contacted during standard working hours otherwise there was a charge. The owner said this wasn't true. Thankfully there was no reason to contact anyone, so we never found out. However, there were some problems with the house when we arrived - outdoor BBQ was dirty, washing line was broken (had to use a rickety clothes horse and buy our own pegs), filter cover at bottom of pool was broken and safe was locked and unusable. We reported these to the owner and woman, but none were fixed whilst we were there. I was told I could buy pegs and I would be reimbursed, but there seemed little point in claiming for a couple of Euros.

We had no problems with broken sun loungers or the tennis table equipment (was this because we were there early in the season? - though that should make no difference as you pay the same regardless of whether it is July or August). However, there are only 8 dining chairs, so not enough for the 10 people the house sleeps. Plus the fridge was too small for us (5 adults). Not enough room for drinks and food unless you were always eating out and just wanted to keep a small supply.

The area around the house is pleasant and the view from the balcony is great for sitting out and having a drink in the evening. It is too far to walk to restaurants etc., so you need to drive. We hired bikes, but it is quite hilly so you need to be reasonably fit. Foz is a nice place with some decent restaurants along the beach and one or two in the town. We would highly recommend the Surfing School as they obviously love what they do and are very helpful.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments and I'm glad you had an enjoyable holiday. I would respond to some of your comments as follows: 1. We have used a folder in the past but it was lost on more than 3 occasions. We now have a picture board hanging in the kitchen with over 40 business cards from local restaurants and attractions in the area. We feel this is more aesthetically pleasing than a folder and less likely to be removed. Our guests have enjoyed the selection of cards in the past and we feel it is more personal and reflects the tastes of our usual guests rather than a somewhat clinical folder. 2. The pool is large by private villa standards. We have taken holidays at the villa for over 10 years, always with children, and the private pool is a highlight of their trip. We have never had a complaint about the size of the pool. 3. The house is managed by Top Casas Estate Agents in Foz. Each guest is provided with the contact details of one of our property managers who looks after them for their trip. There is no charge for this service. The primary reason for having these contact details is to give guests peace of mind that someone is there to sort out serious problems or emergencies. Our agents are very amenable and we encourage all guests to pop into their office and introduce themselves if they wish. 4. The cleaning of the barbecue area and broken pool filter has been passed on to the agents and dealt with - thank you. 5. We purchased new loungers in April 2016 to replace the old ones. 6. The fridge / freezer cabinet unit is 7ft tall and 3ft wide, the largest we could find. 7. We have 8 dining chairs, 3 kitchen bar stools, a high chair and a further 8 outdoor chairs. We choose to have 8 chairs around the dining table so as not to over clutter the room and change the ambience of the villa. 8. i always recommend that holiday makers rent a car to fully appreciate the area and stunning beaches. 9. The surf school is great and the owner is a personal friend, which is why i recommend him to guests. Apologies for the long response but we take reviews seriously and address issues when needed and if we consider appropriate to do so. Despite your comments, i'm glad you had an enjoyable holiday.

Nice accommodation

  • 4 of 5

The villa is nice and has enough space for one or two families. It was clean, has a nice athmosphere and also the pool was in a very good condition. We actually missed some chairs or sun lounger at the pool and the balkony. We actually found some, but it seemed, that they were in a very "used" condition. The fittings in the bathroom and showers could also be updated to match the high standard of the whole villa. The location is fine and there is a nice view to the laguna and the atlantic.

We would book the villa again and we can strongly recommend it for having a nice stay in Foz do Arelho. If the mentioned details would have been fixed, we'd rated the villa with five stars.

Kind regards

Markus

Owner's Response: Dear Markus Many thanks for your kind words. We have ordered 6 new loungers for the 2016 season giving 10 good loungers in total. I'm sorry the loungers were not ordered in time for your stay. Hopefully, you will come back again to enjoy. Sincerely, David.

Perfect home from home in sunny Portugal

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at this villa with a group of friends. The accommodation is spacious, well-appointed with comfortable furnishings, and has a superb outdoor area with stunning views over the lagoon, especially from the upstairs balcony. The property is nestled amongst the trees on a hillside and felt quite secluded. The pool is a decent size and was the perfect way to cool off after lounging in the sunshine. In the evenings, when the sun went down, we would often fire up the BBQ and enjoy some of the local food and wine al fresco on the terrace. It was the ideal environment to socialise.

The villa is a short drive away from Caldas da Rainha, which is a medium sized city - we visited most days to pick up supplies. There are several super markets there with some familiar ones like Lidl and Aldi. The wine in Portugal is very good and so cheap compared to UK prices. You can buy a nice bottle for less than 3 Euros. Needless to say, we were well stocked up for the holiday.

Part of the reason we chose this particular villa was because it is close to Peniche and Nazare - two of Europe’s top surf spots. They are about 30 mins away in opposite directions. We went to Baleal beach, near Peniche, several times to surf and had an awesome time there. It has a few beach bars on the Sand where you can buy food and drink, and also hire shops to rent surf equipment.

Foz do Arelho itself is a picturesque seaside village, which has a massive golden sandy beach with a good selection of restaurants and bars, some of which are along the waterfront. Eating out was a real pleasure for us. The food was of a high standard and the service was excellent. Most Portuguese people we met were very helpful and with few exceptions spoke very good English. We ate in several different restaurants over the holiday and the bill for a 3 course meal with wine was generally around 20 Euros each - our money seemed to go a long way.

Overall the villa exceeded our expectations; it had everything we needed and was the perfect base for our stay. We'll definitely come back to Portugal.
