About the property

Getaway for family and friends in splendid 18th-century Normandy chateau

Chateau de Courtomer was built as the family seat for Count Antoine de Saint-Simon, Marquis de Courtomer and was completed on the eve of the French Revolution. Today’s chateau stands on the vestiges of a medieval building dating back to the 11th century and unusually the chateau and the estate, (350 acres) which includes a farm, remained in the same family for generations until it was recently bought and lovingly restored by Elisabeth Bonner, an American woman from New York.

Since 2005 the entire residence has been extensively renovated marrying the charm and style of France’s elegant past with the conveniences and comforts of today. The chateau is centrally heated and all rooms have en suite bathrooms. The result, a property with the atmosphere of a welcoming family home which is large enough to host family celebrations, and intimate enough to make everyone feel relaxed and happy. The Chateau is listed on the National Register of Historic Monuments.

Courtomer is conveniently situated, just a couple of hours west of Paris by car or train and within easy reach of the Normandy coast offering guests an ideal base from which to explore Normandy’s rich heritage. Local activities and nearby towns provide cultural and recreational fun. Farther afield, you are only two hours from the D-day Beaches, Mont Saint-Michel, Giverny and the Chateaux of the Loire.

Alternatively, you and your guests may just want to relax locally, explore the Chateau’s private parklands, sip wine in the Cour D’honneur, or explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle or on foot. The property offers something for everyone who wants to experience the French ‘savoir vivre’ and the best of Normandy country life. Courtomer village is just a few minutes away and offers a full range of local services, including a boulangerie which still bakes bread in a traditional wood oven, a local cafe where you can enjoy a coffee or a simple lunch, and a local cider producer. There are regular open-air markets in the village offering you a chance to meet local producers selling fresh, seasonal vegetables and a wide variety of cheeses.

During the ‘Ancien Regime’ (pre-revolution) the Chateau and its estate was completely self-sufficient and a wander around the private grounds reveals traces of this rich past. Throughout the grounds guests will find buildings that bear witness to chateau life - the glacière which was used for making and keeping ice, the spring house where the chateau laundry was washed, the Orangerie which was built to grow exotic fruit, and an exceptional 17th-century Protestant chapel.

The Chateau can be enjoyed as a self-catered venue or we can organise full-service support for guests who are looking for an increased level of attention during their stay. Additional services, which need to be pre-booked, can include on-site concierge, housekeeping, catering or private chef, and special event management for celebrations such as weddings and family gatherings. We also offer tailor made packages for conferences and meetings. No customer requirement is too big or too small so don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your needs.

About Elisabeth Courtomer

My husband and I undertook a major five-year renovation and restoration of the chateau in 2005. Our goal is to make you and your guests feel welcome and at home at Chateau de Courtomer.

Elisabeth Courtomer purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Why Elisabeth Courtomer chose Courtomer

We fell in love with the beauty and charm of this magnificent estate in Normandy. Chateau de Courtomer was constructed in the 11th century, completely rebuilt on the eve of the French Revolution in 1789, and remained continuously in the family of the Saint-Simon de Courtomer or their descendants until 1905. It has a long history as a majestic family home. We use it in the same spirit of family, while respecting and maintaining its unique historic and historical character.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

A thorough renovation of systems ensures your comfort and convenience. The decoration is in keeping with the period and style of the Chateau. The working farm adds to the authenticity, with our herd of cattle and tended fields. You can see some of our renovations in progress in the outbuildings.

Also available for rent is our Farmhouse which sleeps up to 8 people.

An unforgettable stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the chateau over the New Year and had a wonderful time. Our group of 14 friends has a tradition of visiting chateaus for New Year and this was our fourth and the best we have found. The chateau is extremely well equipped - the kitchen was a particular joy to cook in - and perfect for parties. Our group enjoyed cocktails in the large living room, playing pool in the basement party room, and much more besides. The chateau was always warm (a rarity, believe me!) and the wifi worked perfectly throughout. Thank you so much and we hope to stay again!

The best deal in Europe

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at Chateau de Courtomer four times in five years. Bringing a group of 15 means that the cost per person per day is cheaper than many Airbnb's to stay in an authentic 18th century castle, and even better, to have it all to yourself! I have never found a deal like this anywhere else in Europe. Absolutely a must for travelers who want a real French experience and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside. Even the most impressive 5-star hotels are a step down from this.

Delightful place, delightful stay

  • 5 of 5

There are some moments in life when you do not need to think about what happiness is, you just feel it. Courtomer is a place where such moments happen.

We organized for Christmas time our family gathering of 28 people age from 8 to 88, and we all felt so much "at home" in the beautiful rooms of the chateau, that we did not want even to go out... Courtomer is more than just a holiday rental, it is about touching history in an intimate way, listening to piano music played on the Pleyel in the "grand salon", chatting with your loved ones close to the chimney in the library, walking in the green tenderness of the lawns in front of the house, and of course enjoying dinner together in the beautiful dining room. We cannot thank enough the Bonner family for the fantastic work they have done, renovating the chateau in a delightful way, not forgetting the comfort of modern life! (even if the cold and humid normand winter, you feel really warm inside...)

The "check-in and check-out" procedures are very efficiently managed by Heather, and the French couple living in the small house near the chateau is very kind and helpful in case you need something.

We would love coming again to Courtomer to live again such an experience,

Philippe and Karina Cohen

C'est Magnifique!

  • 5 of 5

C'est Magnifique! We were invited guests of the Host/Hostess, and couldn't have been more impressed. I've been "commuting" back and forth overseas for 50 years, and have experienced all sorts of travel experiences in Europe. This was a bit more than I'd expected, perhaps because the accoutrements were scaled to present day accommodations without losing the charm of the Chateau.

The private bathrooms were divine (every bedroom has one), and there was no evidence of past mold/mildew as one might have reservations about. Very efficient, clean, cozy, - a true memorable, unforgettable experience for those who go out of their way for a unique experience.

I felt like a movie star in such lush surroundings with so much privacy.

Now, - Go!

We were a group of fifteen family members having a reunion. We picked Chateau de Courtomer for its location (close to French branch of the family) and the en-suite accommodation. We had high expectations, all of which were exceeded. The chateau interior and park are gorgeous, fantastically well equipped for large numbers but best of all a totally relaxing and comfortable environment. The village has everything you need and surrounding towns offer choices of supermarkets and restaurants. None of us knew this part of France and its understated beauty delighted us all. Communication with Halle was perfect. We have wonderful memories and souvenirs and we hope to come back..

My Wedding at the Chateau de Courtomer!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the chateau! We had a small 30 person wedding and had some family stay at the chateau during a four night period. It was a beautiful place and the chateau had everything we could possibly need. The decor is amazing and there are so many rooms that each have unique touches. The grounds are also beautiful and we all loved seeing the cows in the pasture outside of the window. Some of our guests even saw some wild animals on the grounds. Working with Aude to arrange the rental for the wedding was straight forward and very easy. The kitchen accommodated the wedding caterer and the large dinning room easily sat all of our guests. We had the ceremony in the grand salon and it was truly a beautiful setting. We also had wedding dancing in the orangerie - which is a smaller event space on the lawn. All of our guests loved it! We will definitely be returning for anniversaries. I highly recommend the chateau for events and can furnish additional details about the wedding via Aude.

Chateau de Courtomer is surrounded by 150 acres of park and farmland but only a 10 minute walk from the local village which offers a wider range of shops and services.

Mortagne-au-Perche, a nearby town hosts an excellent market every Saturday and is home to a very good restaurant- La Tribunal. The area is famous for it's cider, beer and of course cheese so tastings are always easy to organise.

A short drive away will take you to the historic city of Sées, and a number of local castles-Sacy, Carrouges, Champ de Bataille. Normandy is famous for horse breeding too and the Haras du Pin (French national stud), is a 30 minute drive from Courtomer. The medieval city of Alençon, Forest of Ecouves (nature walks and WWII history), Lisieux (birthplace of St. Thérèse) are all within easy reach of the chateau.

Other Activities: Horse-riding, karting, water park, hiking and cycling around the quiet lanes, hot air ballooning.....too many to list!
