Modern apartment in the historic centre of Coimbra

Updated: 02-Oct-2016
Modern apartment for 6 for a comfortable, well furnished & secure visit

The Almedina Apartment offers a high standard of self-catering accommodation suitable for tourists visiting Coimbra; families, parents and friends visiting University students; delegates to Conferences, and others working at or attending the University and the world famous University of Coimbra Hospital (HUC).

This modern, architect designed apartment is over two floors. It has 3 bedrooms - 2 double & 1 twin, 2 bathrooms, a lounge, balcony, and a fully fitted kitchen. It offers secure accommodation for six people. All linens and towels are provided.

The apartment is suitable for those wanting a comfortable and private and secure base for their visit to the city.

Located within the medieval city centre, next to the Almedina Arch, the apartment is just a short walk from the historic University buildings, the Cathedrals, art galleries and museums and many other ancient sites of interest. Also on the doorstep are fascinating streets and alleyways of shops and a daily market of flowers, fruit and vegetables, wines and cheeses.

There are many pavement and riverside cafes, and restaurants catering for all tastes. Coimbra is famous for its vibrant night-life, festivals and open air concerts, and has hosted Mariza the modern queen of Fado, The Rolling Stones, U2 and Madonna.

The University of Coimbra is a short walk uphill from the apartment, where you can visit the ancient chained library, and see the newly renovated Faculty of Law. Coimbra students have made Fado a national treasure, and there are now many places where you can hear this evocative music, including several close by the apartment. In the summer, the city arranges a series of open air performances sung and played by the pre-eminent masters of this music.

On a different note altogether, the annual Student Festival celebrating the end of exams runs a raucous path along the streets of the historic city centre one week each year. Each Faculty strives to create the best carnival floats, and also summon up their students dressed in the ceremonial 'traje', or cloak and dark suit. The Faculties have bowler hats made in the vivid colours that history has passed down to them. Floats often satirise public figures, and there is a general atmosphere of jollity and fun.

Coimbra is set on a hill. This means steps. Lots of them! There is an elevator at one end of town between the top of the hill and the daily market. But it is the hill that dominates, with the University clock right at the very top. And it's the hill that gives Coimbra its character, and has prevented wholesale destruction of ancient buildings in the name of modernisation, and has banished hi-rise to the outer suburbs.

  • 5 of 5

Bref : really good.

Great central location, near the bottom of the hill in Coimbra (very important). Very generous space with three large bedrooms. lovely balcony to let in cooling breaze and take in views of the city.

Would certainly stay here again. If going to Coimbra make sure you visit the fresh food market.

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Coimbra, the ancient University City, is famous throughout Portugal but little known beyond. With its own micro-climate it offers an ideal year round destination for lovers of culture, history and architecture.

Coimbra is an ideal base for exploring the unspoilt Portuguese beaches, mountains, vineyards and wildlife refuges of Central Portugal. Wine, olives, cheese and fruit are still the main products of this region, and all can be found in the colourful local markets.

There is no need to hire a car to explore the historic centre of Coimbra as the apartment is found inside the medieval city centre, atop the old town walls. It is less than 500 metres from the mainline station in Coimbra, and very close to the University.

Coimbra has retained much that is good about traditional Portuguese culture as well as the food and architecture! There is a joy in meeting people, a friendly and welcoming attitude to visitors. Relaxed public spaces give a feeling of safety at all times of day and night and personal security is respected. Individual travellers and lone female visitors will not be harassed in the way they might in more developed tourist spots or city centres world-wide.

Coimbra is located on the Silver Coast of Portugal, midway between Lisbon and Porto. Modern road and rail links take you quickly and cheaply to the centre of the City of Coimbra, either from Lisbon or Porto Airport. Trains and coaches (Rede Espressos) are of a high standard, frequent, cheap and direct.

The City of Coimbra, known in Portugal as 'The City of Knowledge', is home to the oldest University in Portugal. The medieval atmosphere is reflected in the wealth of historic architecture that survives to this day, and in the student festivals and numerous cafes and restaurants, and also in the vibrant night-life.

Local attractions, within a few minutes walk from the Almedina Apartment include the University of Coimbra and the Joannine Library, the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha) and it's cousin the Sé Nova the "New" Cathedral. Santa Cruz Church with its world famous coffee house, the Café Santa Cruz actually inside the Monastery. Hear Coimbra Fado in Café Santa Cruz, or in local bars or at open air events during the summer. The Machado de Castro Museum, recently wonderfully renovated, houses a collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and tapestries, all exemplifying the development of Christian art through the ages.

Coimbra Art Gallery, close by Almedina Apartment, houses regular exhibitions.

Across the River Mondego is the Santa Clara Monastery, and nearby you can find the Quinta das Lágrimas made famous in the love story of Pedro and Inês. This is set in 12 hectares of gardens together with a 9 hole golf course and historic palace, now a luxury hotel. Other botanical delights of Coimbra include the Jardim Bôtanico of the University and the Choupal Nature Reserve beside the River.

Across the street from the Almedina Apartment is the Fangas bar, for Portuguese Tapas, while excellent food can also be found at many restaurants including Pisçina near the River Mondego, and at dozens of small family restaurants, serving mainly Portuguese food, home cooked.

Wander to the end of the street in which the Almedina Apartment is located and you'll find converted Manueline and Baroque buildings, and here you can sample the delights of the terrace garden of the Passport Cafe, perfectly placed to look out over the River Mondego as it flows through Coimbra, still with wooded riverbanks, parks and riverside bars, restaurants and cafés.

Here at the end of the street you can wonder at the view of the cable-stayed Rainha Santa Isabel Bridge, a modern marvel spanning the river. Apparently world famous amongst Structural engineers! Then look down towards the pedestrian bridge and note how it zig-zags in the middle and wonder again, was it meant to be like that or did they just begin at both ends and meet in the middle?

Boat rides are available locally on the River from the main Square, and more famously at Aveiro , 20 minutes by car, Portugal's 'Venice'. Open top buses take you on a guided tour.

Beaches at Figuera da Foz, Aveiro and for world famous Atlantic surf go to Nazaré.

Mountain and rock climbing, trails, canoeing and mountain bike riding available locally in the Serra da Estrela, and Serra de Lousã.

Ski: Torre, Portugal's only purpose built ski resort in the Serra da Estrela 1 hour by car.

Golf: 9 hole course in Coimbra City, 18 hole course a short drive away.
