À perfect stay
We are a family of 5 and we just had the best holiday in this house - the pictures don’t even represent how beautiful it is - Joanne & Sergio are lovely hosts who are happy to help in any way they can - there are so many little hideaways and places to relax in their garden - it’s unseen ! I would recommend this house and their lovely animals to everyone who wants a great holiday per dolce far niente in Italy - we will be back !

Gorgeous property and home
We loved staying at this gorgeous home and property in Umbria. The home is beautifully restored, very spacious, and very comfortable. The kitchen was our favorite part - it had everything we could need to cook and bake. We enjoyed the pool every single day. The property is wonderful and our daughter was very entertained keeping track of the wandering geese. The only caveat I want to give to my 5-star review is re: the heat. During our stay, it was over 90* F / 32* C outside just about every day. The lower story stays relatively cool when closed up. But the bedrooms upstairs were quite hot even at 10pm still and we couldn’t cool down. This was perhaps a fluke weather pattern, that the air wouldn’t cool down at night to provide relief, but we struggled with getting our children (and us) to sleep in the temperatures and just want to share this for other families as I think unfortunately these crazy heat waves are going to be the norm each summer. Our first night it got nice and cool and the windows (all with screens in them upstairs) were great, but each night thereafter was tough. We come from a pretty cool climate (San Francisco) so may be more sensitive to this. I still list a 5-star review as I don’t hold it against the hosts, they were wonderful. I knew going in there was not air conditioning upstairs, we just didn’t foresee the hot nights. Overall it was a wonderful stay and house. We recommend exploring nearby Orvieto, Todi, and Deruta. We shopped in Guardea for groceries

Fantastic place
We are a family travelling with 4 teenagers and this house had plenty of space for us, both inside with many sofa areas, and outside. We loved the interior details, the kitchen, the garden, the breeze outside, the pool. This is an extraordinary property! Originally a farmer house, now very updated. We had no problems with the hens or geese, as they were fenced in a part of the garden. We would love to come back some day.

Wunderschönes Landhaus in authentischer Umgebung
Vielen Dank an unsere Gastgeber!

About the host

Hosted by Sergio Montefusco

Host profile image
Sergio, un ex-employee of the United Nations, born and raised in Rome Italy, fed up of the hustle and bustle of Roma moved permanently out to the country dedicating himself to gardening and his free range chickens and geese. His first love is roses having 20 different types. He is a wonderful chef and artisan. They say he has 'mani d'oro' golden hands. Sergio is available for all needs during your stay but his policy is to be as invisible or as helpful as guests desire. Sergio and his wife Joanne live on the estate. Their house is located on the property and has an independent access, a private terrace and its own gardens, so privacy is not an issue.

Why they chose this property

Montecchio located is in the green heart of Italy, Umbrian. The historic centre has remained intact and not destroyed by mass tourism. It is a 'true' Italian medieval village. It is strategically almost equidistance from Oriveto and Todi. Too wonderful hill top towns full of history, art, food, wine and architectural marvels. If quiet country life gets to be too much the train to Roma which departs from Alviano (15 minutes by car) takes one hour. Or otherwise one can venture to Florence by train which takes a bit more time. Other fantastic day trips that we propose are to Perugia, Spello, Foligno, Bevagna, Spoleto, Assisi and Montefalco. Or to visit the many beautiful gardens such as Bomarzo and the amazingly beautiful Villa Lante.

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with this house at first site because of the craftsmanship in it's stone work and terracotta roof. The house used to be a working farm. The peasants lived upstairs and the animals on the ground floor. The traditional entrance has a huge staircase lovely loggia where one can sit and look out at the olive trees and mountains. We converted it to a home paying close attention to detail using only the finest of material from the handmade terracotta umbrian tiles, chestnut ceiling beams, to the travertine marble window sills, peperino stone for the stair case and hand made wooden doors and windows. The colours of the walls reflect the colours of Orvieto and the historic colours that are found in paintings from this area of Italy. And all the counters in the kitchen are made from Carrara marble.
It was also the close proximity to Rome and Tuscany and multiple wonderful Umbrian hillside towns full of history that also convinced us that this was the place to be. We never tire of visiting the towns around us and the multiple vineyards for wine tasting.
