About this property

Spectacular Ocean Views, 3 Minutes to the Beach

The Cape Cottage is a gorgeous coastal cottage on a 130-acre property five minutes from the Cabot Trail. It is listed on Homeaway's Top 10 Vacation Rentals in Nova Scotia, at #8 "Margaree's Cottage."

If your preferred weeks happen to be booked this summer, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #2599594 (nearby with same spectacular views) #277105, #203860, #382569, #3490361 This cottage normally books by the week, Sundays to Sundays, when you are choosing your preferred dates.

There’s ocean, a huge beach nearby and breathtaking panoramas because The Cape has windows everywhere, along with a cathedral ceiling, lovely beams, and walls finished with white boards inside and cedar shingles outside, in classic Cape Breton style. From the deck, you can see Lobster boats, eagles perch nearby, moose, bobcats and foxes make appearances, and whales pass by most of the year; you will wake up to these views each morning and enjoy them all day.

You will enjoy complete seclusion and incredible views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton. There is a lovely, mature hardwood forest to explore, and as day turns to evening in technicolor, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.

For connecting with friends, streaming or surfing, you will love having a 150 mb/sec. fibre-op connection even though we are seemingly far from the hubbub. Dig into a good book, or just gaze out to sea. For those arriving in an EV, you will have a 50 AMP /volt dedicated car charger all to yourself in the private parking area. (a full charge in 8 hours.)

I designed this cottage to have all of the charm of a real coastal cottage, with excellent amenities, and lots of privacy in a spectacular setting with fantastic views of the ocean. Many folks rent out their seasonal homes in Cape Breton, but The Cape Cottage was designed specifically for visitors' pleasure and needs. There are two bedrooms; a master and a smaller second bedroom which is great if you are travelling with children. The tiled bathroom is roomy, with heated floors. A decorative propane fireplace and electric heat will keep you cozy on chilly Spring or Fall days. A large deck with BBQ is perfect for watching eagles go by or boats out front. This cottage changes over on Sundays only.

REFUNDS: Although the listing shows "No refunds for cancellations," we DO offer refunds (in circumstances described in the "House Rules" section of this listing. VRBO's cancellation standard categories are not broad enough to cover all policies.)

There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, a week is what it takes to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. It's nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are ocean breezes to keep any bugs at bay.

Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and safe swimming for children, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Fossils abound. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.

There is no shortage of things to do in the area. In addition to Chimney Corner beach, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (3 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (5 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cheticamp, about 20 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture.

Only minutes from Cheticamp is Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, look-offs and waterfalls. There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links golf course (rated #42 in the world by Golf Digest) by the sea, which is only 20 minutes away and offers a unique golfing experience in Inverness. There are also renowned crafters in the area; beautiful pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art sculpture can all be found locally.

The Cape was perfect! Beautiful retreat after spending days in some of the most awe inspiring land scapes we have ever seen. Stewart was a very helpful host who ensured our visit was perfect. Follow his recommendations for a true Cape Breton Island experience.

Magical Spot!
We loved the Cape Cottage! The kitchen had everything needed to cook fresh seafood, comfortable beds, we felt all the coziness with plenty of space to unwind. The ocean gazing, Chimney Corner Beach down the road, whale and eagle viewing from the sitting area and lush forest to explore around the cottage was so special we cannot wait to return next year!

views of coast and quiet, starry skies at night
The house is open and bright, set on a hillside overlooking the coast below. Private and quiet, an excellent getaway. Many local places to visit and explore for hiking, biking, dinners out. We enjoyed live music of the region and nearby Highlands National Park for hiking. Knowledgeable and helpful host.

A little slice of paradise.
The cape house is simply lovely. Sits up on a hill overlooking the water. Sunsets out your window. The house itself has been tastefully decorated and has everything you’d want for a week. It’s a drive to get anywhere but that’s the nature of Cape Breton. Sitting on that beautiful coast gives you access to wonderful beaches, the national park, hiking and music. The host meets you on day one and lays out a map and list of things to do and see, where to eat and where not to eat. He was spot-on with his recommendations. The only issue we had was a booking snafu. After reaching out far in advance we were asked what Friday-Friday dates we wanted. We picked a summer week and was told to reach out in November again to confirm but they’d be saved for us. We did and received a lease for the stay. We signed the lease and planned a 3 week vacation around the rental. What I didn’t notice was the lease was changed to a Sunday-Sunday rental. Same weekends but two days later. This was not pointed out to me. Because of this, we had to leave a day earlier than planned and find other last minute accommodation for two nights when I finally noticed the change months later. I wish he had noted he needed to change the dates when sending us the lease agreement. I wish I had checked the dates on the lease. We wound up paying for a night we couldn’t stay and losing a beautiful day in Cape Breton.

I built the cottage in 2011 because there was a lovely underused spot on the property with spectacular views. I started in April of 2011 and finished the same summer. It is a lovely location with with old-growth hardwood forests behind, and an awesome unobstructed view of the ocean. There is all the privacy one could want.

Why they chose this property

Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and the scenery on this stretch of coast is particularly striking; it can also be dramatic, with 130 kph winds at many points of the year. One must keep a clean yard in such conditions! There is such a rich culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. We see some of the most dramatic sunsets anywhere, watch whales play in our front yard, and fishermen haul their lobster traps every year. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people, and the daily rhythm here is slower than in most cities; we visit neighbors and friends whenever we can, as we are busy in the summer months. It's also nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are breezes to keep any bugs at bay.

What makes this property unique

Chimney Corner beach– in addition to the fine beach and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.

There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the new Cabot Links golf course by the sea (#43 in the world), which is only 20 minutes away and offers a unique golfing experience in Inverness. Cabot Cliffs, (even more spectacular- ranked #9 in the world by Golf Digest!) was developed by Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser (who developed Bandon Dunes in Oregon). The acclaim so far is pretty much unanimous-from the New York Times to Golf Digest. A third par-3 course opened last year. There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk art can all be found locally.
