About this property

Stoneybrough: A luxury townhouse offering exceptional hospitality for 6/7 guests

Almost Heaven.
This gracious, award-winning Kenmare townhouse is tucked away in the heart of the village. The secluded location is perfect. Instead of driving into Kenmare for a daily visit, you’re already there. Everything—groceries, pubs, restaurants, entertainment, shops, churches—are close at hand.
No searching around town for a parking spot.
You walk everywhere.
You don’t feel like a visitor.
You’ll live like locals.
Nestled in a copse of eleven white birch trees, Stoneybrough contains 1540 square feet of living area, complete with a full length deck overlooking the River Finnehy, and a fine garden between. You’ll discover an ancient, beautifully designed drystone bridge, known as the Cromwell Bridge, in full view of this highly acclaimed property. A carefully tended Druid stone circle, predating Stonehenge by 2000 years, is around the corner and up toward the end of Market Street, a pleasant ten minute walk rewarded with quiet moments contemplating the ancient stonework and the hardy folk who built it.
Stoneybrough boasts solid Burmese teak woodwork, wall to wall hotel grade wool carpeting throughout, beveled glass French doors and other design and decorating touches you'll find nowhere else.
Guests enjoy blazing fast Starlink WiFi (Download 154; Upload 57 Mbps) along with Sky TV in the lounge, dining room, and the master suite as well. A Bluetooth-enabled stereo radio/CD player with a variety of mostly Irish music—to put you in the mood— is on the bar next to the kitchen. Play your own favorite playlists, but we challenge you to put on “Galway Girl” by The Kilkenny Boys and not sing along!
Stoneybrough is now fitted with a Gen2 Alexa device for information and entertainment.
Two sculptured marble fireplaces provide warmth and comfort, one with a classic Liscannor stone hearth. You'll enjoy pressured showers and powerful built-in hair dryers. A state of the art Apple iMAC computer, free WiFi, a fully equipped kitchen and private off street parking round out the amenities. For a second car, a free public car park is found just across the footbridge.
Looking forward to a night on the town? With sufficient notice, we can arrange for a responsible baby sitter for you.
Stoneybrough furnishes locally made, all natural non-allergenic guest soaps and luxurious robes for all our guests. The cook will find everything needed, right down to alderwood planks for those freshly caught salmon filets on the grill and a DeLonghi cappuccino/espresso machine for your pleasant, tranquil mornings on the deck.
Stoneybrough is not an investment property rented and operated by an impersonal management company. Rather, it’s our second home, managed by us with the help of Joanne, our amazing housekeeper. We believe Stoneybrough strikes the perfect balance between upscale luxury and personalized, carefree service that promotes enjoyment, relaxation and genuine satisfaction, knowing you’ve made the right choice.
Befitting the honor of achieving VRBO/Homeaway’s coveted “Premier Partner” level, we proudly feature premium Boll and Branch linens on every bed, and luxurious Merino lambswool-filled pillows in the Master Suite. At Stoneybrough, you’ll find American comforts you’d expect, but with an Irish accent.
Along with carefully chosen period art and antiques, you'll notice a decorative battle sword mounted on a wall opposite the kitchen, and a genuine Irish drum called a boudran'. These symbolize the great paradox of Irish civilization: their fierce, warlike history melded with their fun-loving, lively and charming musical traditions.
A two-minute stroll takes you to the heart of downtown, with the finest restaurants, pubs, two five star hotels, live music, and busy shops and galleries for which Kenmare is justly famous. The five-star Park and Sheen Falls hotels provide fine cuisine as well, along with luxurious spa experiences judged by Fodor's as the best in Europe.
Kenmare Golf Club, with beautiful views of Kenmare Bay, is only a short walk away. The Ring of Kerry course overlooking Kenmare Bay and the majestic mountains beyond is only a ten-minute drive.
You'll also find Kenmare centrally located for many of the finest golfing experiences in Ireland: the Ballybunion, Waterville, Beaufort, Dooks, Glengariff, Old Head, Tralee and Killarney courses are all within reasonable driving distances.
Kenmare rests astride The Wild Atlantic Way, at the foot of the Ring of Kerry, the most popular travel destination in Ireland. There you'll find breathtaking scenery, stone age ring forts, many unforgettable stops and the striking 6th century monastic site on the island of Skellig Michael, (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The island hosted the final scenes in Star Wars VII, when Rae delivers the lost light saber to a brooding Luke Skywalker, and now, a more extensive exposure to the island in Star Wars VIII. A stunning place just an hour away from Stoneybrough. You can even visit a long string of pre-historic fossilized tetrapod tracks on nearby Valencia Island.
A full day exploring the Ring, another on the wild and less-traveled Beara Peninsula, and still another spent on the equally spectacular Dingle Peninsula (Ryan's Daughter and Far And Away were filmed there) will leave you with the most indelible experiences and memories imaginable.
By special arrangement, a private tour guide can customize the perfect day trips to meet your requirements, and our housekeeper, Joanne, is on call to provide flawless concierge-level service throughout your stay.
Returning home, you might whip up a gourmet dinner served on Ralph Lauren Wedgwood china, with the freshest locally sourced ingredients from Roger O'Sullivan's butcher shop and the delightful small grocery just across the cobbled street from Stoneybrough. Feast on local grass fed beef, or fresh Kerry lamb, seasoned and garnished with rosemary picked from your own garden. Or indulge yourself with savory alderwood-grilled Atlantic salmon caught just offshore, with fresh dill from the deck planter.
Or not! Take in an evening of fine dining, fun, music and entertainment at any of the amazing pubs and gourmet restaurants just a five minute walk away. There you’ll enjoy the freshest salmon, shrimp, whitefish, cod, and bay mussels, a local delicacy, in every bowl of steamy, creamy Kenmare seafood chowder. And try the grass-fed beef, venison, Kerry lamb, and the traditional colcannon potato dish with a bit of rich Kerry Gold butter. Delicious!
Then, after an evening of fine food, drink and entertainment, stroll home under the stars, and fall asleep to the enchanting music of the River Finnehy.

Secret Santa Abode-Stoneyborough
A wonderful Home from Home, cosy, comfortable, spacious, spotless, every modern facility at our fingertips. And a surprise welcome package that surpassed any welcome package we’ve ever received & we’ve travelled extensively all over the world. We had perfect rooms with a view of luscious vegetation, a fast flowing river & historical landmarks. The surrounding village of colourful Kenmare was a delight, all within a stones throw of our beautiful cottage with interesting restaurants, a lovely hotel, singing pubs, organic shops, regular shops & a local supermarkets nearby. There was easy access to the amazing stunning scenery of the surrounding famous Kerry locations making Kenmare the perfect location. The local people were as expected in Ireland friendly, helpful, funny & entertaining. The bonus was the Private Parking, a must in any village & outside our door. So what more do you want in such a great place. We really wanted to keep this fabulous place a great Christmas secret! The Kish, Deirdre, Kieran & Tara Doolabh-London

A hidden gem
Wonderful, wonderful stay. The painters and gardener were a little intrusive but that was the only problem we encountered. The house was very well equipped and we all felt at home immediately. Lovely touches from Joanne.

Very conveniently located house in Kenmare
We had a great time in Johns house over the Christmas. It was very comfortable and homely and we really relaxed and enjoyed our time there. We know Kenmare very well and often stay with relatives but it was lovely to have our own base after celebrating Christmas and the following days with our families in their houses. Thanks to my brother and his wife for all their catering and hospitality over the few days. This lovely house has everything one would need for cooking and baking but luckily I didn’t have to use anything! It is very centrally located for restaurants and pubs and we enjoyed plenty of good brunches in Mick and Jimmys, and Boka, as well as music in the pubs in the evenings, without having to order a taxi to get home. Thank you John for renting your house to us, and Joanne for looking after us while we were there. We would highly recommend this house for any couples who like to be very close to the centre of the town and wish to have a comfortable luxury few days!

YOU make the moments.
YOU make the memories.
WE just help you lay the plans. We take pride in furnishing our guests with a small avalanche of information, preparing them in advance for the pleasures of Kenmare and the surrounding attractions within an easy day trip from Stoneybrough. If it’s a worthwhile use of your precious time, we’ve done it, and will tell you all about it.
We're Americans, living in Florida, with residence properties in Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands and Istria, and now, Ireland. We have two sons and six grandchildren, all above average. We're retired professionals, now enjoying our avocations including musical performance, writing, ocean sailing, travel, hiking, biking and fishing. We’re travelers ourselves, and have come to have strong opinions on what our fellow travelers expect and deserve.
One of my interests is the dramatic history of the development of stipple engraving in London in the 1700’s. All but two of my acquisitions are displayed in Stoneybrough, along with a short biography of the populizer of the process, William Wynne Ryland.
When I was a little boy, my parents admired a fine Georgian mansion on a country lane not far from where we lived. Dad's nickname was Stoney, as is mine. Dad had picked up a little pidgin English in the Marines during WWII. He'd say, 'Stoney no can buy that house! Stoney broke! So my parents began calling the place, 'Stoneybroke.'
A 'brough' is an archaic Gaelic word for an enclosure, like a fort or even a walled cattle confinement area. So 'Stoneybrough' is a play on words that has meaning for our family. As one guest put it, Stoneybrough is “easy to find, hard to leave.”
One final thing: When you book with us, you’ll soon find that we care about your Irish holiday almost as much as you do.
~John and Janelle

Why they chose this property

We found Kenmare by getting lost. Our B&B was described as being 'at the foot of the Ring of Kerry'. Who knew the Ring had two feet? With no GPS back then, we were at the wrong foot.
We tore through through Kenmare to get to the B&B on time at the right foot. Janelle said, 'What a lovely town! Let's stop!'
We couldn't. We had to get over the daunting Conor Pass on a cowpath before sunset to reach our B&B.
Soon after, having fallen hopelessly in love with Ireland, and after scouring the Internet listings, our younger son and I took a prospecting trip looking for a possible holiday cottage. We visited thirteen homes from Westport in the west central region down through County Cork. The stunning scenery around County Kerry just grabbed us and held on. “But,” we thought, “why drive into Kenmare when we can stay in Kenmare?” What’s now Stoneybrough and its unique, unparalled location stood head and shoulders above everything we saw on the entire trip.
Our charming village is the perfect “home base” for exploring the most magnificent sites and scenery Ireland has to offer. Day trips are easy to plan and easy to execute, once you’re armed with the best information. We’ll help you with everything—details and support geared to your personal interests.
Kenmare has won the National Tidy Town competition several times, and in June 2017 won Ireland’s Best Kept Small Town in a national government competition. As a National Heritage Town, Kenmare’s charm and authenticity are preserved by law forever.
When you book with us, you'll promptly receive our proprietary materials full of tips, sites, side trips, directions and unique experiences you'll not find in the tour guides. Our "local knowledge" is unsurpassed. As travelers ourselves, we see the property, the village and the area through the eyes of travelers—like our guests.
We believe we found the nicest property in the nicest location in the nicest town in the nicest county in Ireland. We think you'll agree.

What makes this property unique

Why Stoneybrough? Well, its location. Stoneybrough's proximity to everything is unmatched. Instead of driving miles to downtown, you're right there, yet away from the hustle and bustle along a serene, bubbling river, with the iconic Cromwell Bridge just downstream.
Kenmare is a proud, responsible village. A National Heritage Town, Kenmare has won the national 'Tidy Town' award and a perrenial winner in the Small Town category as Ireland’s Best Kept Town.
Kenmare’s warmth and friendliness is hard to describe until you experience it. To local folks, we’re 'blow-ins'. We weren't born there. But they go out of their way to make everyone feel genuinely welcome.
And here's the magic: you don't feel like a visitor, getting into town in your rental car, finding a place to park, (not always easy), and driving back on dark, unfamiliar, narrow roads, on the “wrong” side, after a few drinks and some good fun. Rather, you feel like you belong. You're a part of your surroundings, not a casual visitor. You walk home. Heck, you can crawl home! You're connected. The feeling is real.
Stoneybrough is fitted with the latest in technology, new furniture interspersed with museum quality antiques, carefully chosen period art, a 'super king' master bed, deck furniture and even a jaunty beach umbrella for those sunny afternoons relaxing on the deck! You'll lack for nothing. You'll stock up at the many small groceries around town, two wine shops, and the Farmer's Market on Wednesday for gourmet meats, fresh fish, eggs, artisan cheeses, breads and all kinds of goods practically at your doorstep. Bookshelves devoted to helpful maps, destinations, Irish history and culture can be found in the living room.
You'll find a welcome basket of wine and Irish products from our splendid housekeeper, Joanne, who'll help you with logistics, show you how to operate everything, and answer all your questions. She's available for anything you might need during your stay, and can arrive on a moment's notice.
