About this property

Historic Adobe in Old Town Albuquerque Three Blocks from the Plaza

Lots to see and do this time of year in and around Albuquerque! Come explore, peruse, hike, write, dine, or just sit still someplace shady and watch that New Mexico sky. See below for more ideas.

Enjoy the glamor and Southwestern charm of this old, territorial style home. The Old Town House in the museum district is an authentic adobe, built c. 1902. Directly cross the street from Tiguex Park, and about a block from the center of historic Old Town Plaza, the location is unmatched. With original wood floors, beamed ceilings, and foot thick walls, this house evokes the romance of the Old West, and is a fantastic base for your Albuquerque adventures.

Three bedrooms and two baths accommodate 6 (2 queen beds and 1 full bed, as well as a sleeper sofa in the living room, which adds flexibility in sleeping arrangements). The en suite master bath features a claw foot tub, the second bedroom has a gas kiva fireplace, and soft lighting is achieved in all three bedrooms with chandeliers. An open floor plan connects the living room and kitchen. All kitchen appliances are stainless. An adjoining sitting room (with its own gas kiva fireplace) allows views of the park through a side lit French door. The dining room seats 6 comfortably. There is off street parking for two vehicles parked in tandem (for example, a large pickup and regular sized sedan will both fit).

The back yard patio area is equipped with three bistro tables and six chairs, as well as a charcoal grill.

This is a great place for a girls' weekend. It serves well as a retreat for writing projects. With the fireplaces, clawfoot tub, and location near the plaza, it works nicely for a romantic getaway. Walking distance to the Hotel Albuquerque, Hotel Chaco, and the new Sawmill Market, and only a short distance from the Convention Center, it makes an excellent base from which to attend area conferences. With the park across the street, the Explora! museum across the park, and plenty for families to do nearby, this house also works well as a base for families looking to take a break, while including some science, art, history, outdoor activity and fun.

My staff is using best practices for cleaning in accordance with the NM Safe program.

Here are things to Do in Albuquerque:

Check out the Albuquerqueoldtown and the visitalbuquerque sites to see upcoming events.

Here are a few of local restaurants of note (there are many other fabulous ones in Old Town, and throughout Albuquerque, but these are some of my favorites):

Blackbird Coffee in the Patio Market - kind of a secret garden vibe. They are on FB, and are located a short walk west of the house in the courtyard on the southeast side of the Plaza.

The St. Claire Winery and Bistro - great food, often live music, and local New Mexico wines. About a five minute drive (with traffic).

Church St. Cafe - near the Place - New Mexican cuisine with several beautiful, interesting seating areas, including a lovely one outside.

High Noon - near the Plaza - In one of the oldest adobes in town. Great food.

Seasons - within walking distance - upscale, great food, good service.

Golden Crown Panederia - Bakery which gets rave reviews in my guest book.

Remedy Coffee - Less than a 10 minute walk to Lomas. Pretty little patio and also a generously sized back room with a kiva fireplace.

Slow Burn Coffee - a 15 minute walk east on Mountain Rd. Great coffee!

Flying Star - About a 10 minute drive north on Rio Grande. In the summer, the shaded patio is particularly lovely. In cooler months, the patio also has a fireplace.

There is also a Starbucks (with a fireplace) about 4 minutes away by car, or about a 15 minute walk.

ABQ Spring Break
I felt lucky to stay in this charming home. It was beautiful and quirky in all the right ways. Carol is a very thoughtful host and provided many great amenities. Easy walk to old town and several museums. Close to Lowes for groceries if needed. Upon arrival a breaker was out and Carols team came within 15 minutes to reset. It's clear that the home is well cared for and so will it's guest be, too.

About the host

I am a retired U.S. Naval officer currently teaching at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. While I will always love the maritime environment, I head for New Mexico whenever I get the chance. I am also fortunate enough to have excellent support staff for the house.

Why they chose this property

I am a fan of the blend of cultures, terrain, climate, and cuisine in New Mexico. The way the air smells, sharply blue sky, fab food, great people, public art. People are friendly and real. I like the vibe these things impart, and I like Albuquerque in particular. Thinking ahead to life following active naval service, I was delighted by the opportunities the Old Town House represented, even though I was stationed overseas at the time I happened across it. Since I love New Mexico as much as I love to travel, I thought it would be the perfect eventual home plate and launching pad for all sorts of adventures. It has turned out that my Navy life has continued on past retirement from active duty service (something I could not have predicted). I'm now involved in academic and policy facets - as of spring of 2023 I am down to finishing the dissertation to complete my PhD in international relations - aiming to finish the writing by fall of 2023 - whew! So I continue to enjoy sharing the Old Town house with people who seem to enjoy Albuquerque just as much as I do.

What makes this property unique

The outstanding location, adjacent to much loved Tiguex Park, and also within steps of the museums and the plaza, is hard to beat. While restaurants and shops are easily accessible, the environment of the house itself is quite calm. The house is full of charm and character, and old adobes sleep very well. It is fairly routine for balloons to launch at daybreak from the balloon park, and often their flight path takes them over Tiguex park, which makes them visible out the front windows as they approach. Depending on their altitude, you might even be able to hear them fire their burners! If you'd like to see what it's like to be down on the field during mass ascension at the Balloon Fiesta, you can search for my video "2017 Balloon Fiesta - Final Prep and Takeoff." The house is about 20 minutes from the balloon fiesta park, and the balloon museum.
