Perfect break in rural France
We were only a small group of six (plus one dog) so we had plenty of room in this large house. We chose to stay here owing to its quiet, rural location and large open spaces, although it is only a short drive from several large towns. It is an attractive property (as shown in the photographs) and the rooms are really spacious; it was clean and comfortable and lacked nothing in the way of facilities or equipment. Great use has been made of the outside spaces where we made the most of the warm summer evenings. Check-in was straightforward and Stephen was always a quick email away. We only needed to contact him prior to our stay and he responded quickly. Overall we had a fantastic week here and enjoyed our stay immensely (we wish it could have been longer). We would have no hesitation in staying here again should we return to the area.

Great stay thank you
The place was excellent. So much so we stayed there instead of going out a couple of days as there was plenty to do and it was big enough for the whole family to do their own thing. I would thoroughly recommend this place.

Great holiday
Large expansive farm property. Lots of indoor and outdoor space for 8 adults and 3 small children. Relaxing time to chill and have family time. Tennis facility was well used and a bonus.

Spacious Rural Retreat
Gite Montmanjeon has a beautiful, rustic and impressive exterior. It's location is fairly isolated in stunning, peaceful countryside. We took the train into Paris from Chateau Thierry, visited Disneyland by car, Versailles by car, Soissons for eating out (Le Clovis restaurant very good) and a champagne cave tour in Epernay. So there is a great combination of rural escapism plus plenty to do nearby; you obviously have to be prepared to drive and navigate! The interior of the house is seriously spacious (we had a party of 8). My only improvement would be that the downstairs loo is slightly shabby and a bit damp smelling and the 1st floor bathroom is dated. However, everything functions fine. The enclosed courtyard behind the huge kitchen is picturesque and eating under the willow tree is lovely. The BBQ area is fantastic. Overall we had a wonderful stay. The contrast between urban England and the secluded vineyards of this region of France cannot fail to recharge your batteries.

Beautiful setting
Lovely, spacious cottage in a beautiful setting. Perfect for two families. Only two qualms - firstly, nobody there to meet us on arrival, and instructions weren't provided in the emails beforehand. Told that Nina would be there, but when we rung the number provided I spoke to someone who didn't speak English, so it took considerable time to locate keys to the cottage. Also, the piano not tuned, slightly disappointing. Otherwise, very nice indeed, would certainly recommend.

About the host

My parents bought this property when i was 4, and all my childhood memories remain in the walls of this house. I used to live in Paris when i grew up, and we would go to this house every single weekend! After studying biology at the Pasteur Institute (Paris) for several years, I moved with my wife and our two kids to Toronto, where i do research at the University of Toronto.

Why they chose this property

When we bought this house in 1975, my parents fell in love with the location: so quiet, so secluded, yet so close to Paris (1h drive). The house is surrounded by rolling hills of open farmland, and the only noise you hear is birds singing!
However, when we bought the house, it was in a very rough shape. The roof was leaking and we had to change 500 square meters of roof tiles!! There was no toilet, no bathroom, no heat, and only the kitchen and a bedroom were 'livable'. After nearly 40 years of renovations, we uncovered the original gem, fully renovated 275 square meters of living space, kept the original charm of the old farmhouse, but brought comfort and high-end finish throughout.
