About this property

Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia Natl. Pk; ferry to Bar Harbor/Ocean - 5 Min. Walk

Winter Harbor is a quaint working fishing community with charm and amenities that capture the desires of many a sight-seeing vacationer, as well as avid hikers, bikers, kayakers, boaters, photographers, artists, writers, antique and seashell hunters, and for those who just want to have a relaxing get-a-way.

Cheerful, comfortable, close, convenient…all describe our home nestled in this quaint fishing village where one can enjoy what Maine has to offer and then return to a quiet home where only Maine’s birds or a harbor’s foghorn can be heard so one can relax, reflect and rest up for a new day of adventures.

There are 3 bedrooms, all eclectically decorated with Maine themes, country quilts, artwork, antiques to provide that pleasurable “visiting grandma’s” venue yet still incorporating today’s amenities of a newly updated galley kitchen complete with local Deer Isle granite countertops with bar seating, microwave, refrigerator, ceramic cook-top, coffee maker, toaster, small oven/broiler, pots, pans, china, glassware, silverware, washer/dryer. Our open concept dining/living room features TV w/DVD & VCR player, movie library, radio/CD player, and wireless internet. Bed linens, towels, paper products, shampoo/condtioner are provided. There are 2 full bathrooms, one on each floor.

On our back porch, one can enjoy having a private moment with morning coffee and a book. Or have a BBQ or lobster out on our outdoor grill located on our lovely, stone patio with a 3- foot round, stone fire-pit. There is an awesome playground across from our home that our young visitors would certainly enjoy and parents can view easily from our home. We are on the end of a dead-end street so traffic is very limited. We also have board games, chess, backgammon, checkers, playing cards, and outdoor toys for those who would like to partake. We have several bikes in our garage for you use and pleasure. Ocean viewing and wading and lake swimming are close by for your refreshment and enjoyment.

Kayaks can be rented easily from locations mentioned in our “Welcome to our Home” book as well as other attractions, ferry & bus schedules, shops, hikes and of course the magnificent Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula whose entrance is a short 5 minute drive from our house and covers nearly 2500 acres where sightseeing, hiking, biking, picnicking are all there for your enjoyment. One might even spy a bald eagle fly by.

A free excursion bus sponsored by LLBean picks up passengers at the end of our road at Rte. 186 to take folks around Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula throughout the day during the summer season allowing passengers to get off the bus at a spot and be picked up later on another bus run. We are a few minutes’ walk to the ocean, restaurants, grocery store, lobster pounds, post office, public library, historic society museum, artists’ studios, bank, farmers’ market, a unique 5&10 cent store, ice cream parlor, antique and handmade artisan crafts shops.

The nearby Bar Harbor Ferry on Sargent St. (walking distance away, .2 mi ) can take you over to Bar Harbor which serves as a leisurely transportation vehicle as well as a sight-seeing boat ride on one of the prettiest bays in Maine. Plus, one can get to see eagles, ospreys, porpoises, dolphins, seals, pilot whales along the way! There is also a public boat launch, golf course, and our historic Hammond Hall where many varied, live entertainment performances are held throughout the year, several restaurants, lobster co-ops, farmer's market, free LLBean buses tour thru Schoodic Peninsula —all just moments away from our doorstep!

Swimming is available off the rocky shores or one can seek enjoyment at Jones and Flanders Ponds with their sandy beaches and fresh waters which are just a short distance away where one can do some swimming, boating and fishing (permits required). Also, the area has vineyards hosting tours and tastings, historic buildings, unique shops, a variety of eateries, other quaint fishing villages, art galleries, antique shops, hiking trails, educational science and environmental centers, and more of Maine’s beautiful coastline, mountains and lakes…all beckoning folks to come and explore.

Out on Schoodic Peninsula one can drive, bike, walk, hike, picnic, explore the rugged coastline especially at the Point where the Atlantic Ocean crashes upon its rocky coast ( this is a must see to enjoy this beautiful Maine nature). Visit the Acadia Nat'l Park ranger station where one can learn more about the natural elements in this area, it's history, upcoming events and more.

The Owner Is Unaware of the Actual Condition
We had a MAJOR problem our first night - NO HEAT and NO HOT WATER!! We discovered this after driving back from sunset at Cadillac Mountain which is an hour away. The owner was VERY RESPONSIVE and ordered fuel to be delivered the next morning to provide for heat and hot water. The gas grill was completely out of fuel. Again, the owner was responsive in providing propane the next day. The gas grill had been on fire and the knobs melted!! Had my brother not been mechanically inclined, it would have been unusable. There is NO KERIG as stated in the description so buy coffee accordingly. It was disturbing to read in the house rules book that the comforters and blankets are ONLY WASHED SEASONALLY!! The garage is full of trash bags. Not sure how they get their trash picked up but IT'S FULL OF TRASH!! The screens are full of holes which wasn't a problem for us but if you plan to stay during warm months there will be no way to get fresh air into the house without letting all the mosquitos in too. We found that most of the activity for Acadia was on the western side of the park. We would be inclined to stay on that side next time rather than drive the one hour to those activities and Bar Harbor. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed MOOSE ISLAND in the Schoonic Peninsula close to the house. The biggest problem with this stay is the owner is not aware of the actual condition of the home. Even though the issues were resolved, it caused stress disappointment.

Quiet Stay in Winter Harbor
We loved the location of this rental! We walked to the 5 and 10 in Winter Harbor, enjoyed the Pickled Wrinkle and the short drive to Schoodic Point. The neighborhood was very quiet! We spent four nights here while we explored the Schoodic and Mount Desert Island. The rental was exactly what we were expecting and fit our needs well. We had 4 adults and 3 kids and it was just enough space for us all.

Overall Fair Property
The house smelled very musty, holes in window screens, slow bathroom drain. No hot water first day, resolved the next day. Not made aware that it was a duplex. We really liked the area, locals very welcoming. Property manager was friendly and helpful.

Acadia National Park
It was well equipped and perfect for a couple of moms with their 20 year old sons. We started our days with beautiful sunrises at the Peninsula and then made the drive to Acadia National Park all four days and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay!

My wife retired as a substitute teacher and I'm retired from IBM after 34 years. We've enjoyed our yearly vacations in this area since 1991 because of the beautiful views, warm people and the slower pace of life.

Why they chose this property

Our family has been coming to Winter Harbor since 1991 when we had an opportunity to rent a vacation home from one of our friends which was located on the water facing Mount Desert Island across from Frenchman’s Bay. We stayed for a week and had one of the nicest, most relaxing, vacations we’ve had, with a view that was breathtaking. Since then we came each year for the next 13 years and stayed at the same location. We became very familiar with the area and townspeople all of whom were very friendly, helpful and genuine. Our kids began referring to our stays as “going to our Maine house”. In 2004, we decided to purchase a home in an area we had come to love (formally the Navy housing). This turned out to be one of our best decisions.

What makes this property unique

Close proximity to great hiking and biking trails in Acadia National Park Schoodic Peninsula, short easy walk to town to visit shops, farmers' market, food stores, fresh lobster/seafood pounds, restaurants, public library, bank, access to free bus transportation around local towns and out to Schoodic Peninsula, 1/4 mile to multiple launch sites for kayaking, public ferry to Bar Harbor (seasonal), public access to Maine's pristine, coastal waters for relaxing atmosphere or a quick dip. Updated WIFI and patio with fire pit for lounging and enjoyment.
