About this property

Charming Medieval House with piano & Big Garden, in idyllic Todi

This is a fabulous house that dates back to the 13th century, as witnessed by a Romanesque lion's head still in the facade. It has been entirely renovated (with suggestions and designs by the great sculptor Beverly Pepper). It is inside the town walls, about 5 min. walk from the main square, so it is conveniently located in terms of shopping. I mean why come to Italy and isolate yourselves in a rural farmhouse? May as well stay in Palo Alto (they tell me the landscape is very similar). We wanted to enjoy living amongst the Italians and that is why we chose this house. And yet it is very private and quiet because it is flanked by the apse of the church of S. Prassede on the south-west side, and has a 1,200 sq.ft. garden in front. All the windows have great views of the valley below and the Martani mountains directly east. And we have just installed a Daikin AC system in all the bedrooms.

Todi is smack in the center of Umbria, one of Italy's most beautiful and artistic regions, so it's not far from any of the other wondrous hill towns in the region. (It is much less touristy than neighboring Tuscany.) Todi has about 9,000 inhabitants, with very little industry and rolling hills and farm land all around. It is set on top of a hill, 480 meters above sea level, and is primarily medieval in its architectural make-up.

Another good reason for being in town, apart from enjoying concerts at the theater, exhibitions, cocktails on the square, is the BEST ICE CREAM in the world (as verified by many of our guests).
Yes, the Bar Pianegiani, a 10-min. walk up the street. We can also help you participate in a cooking class with the chef who will come to the house, cook the meal and serve it to you. Great fun! You will find shelves of guide books and a green folder with lots of suggestions of things to do and places to visit.

Oh yes, the Wi-Fi is free!

Not many properties in Todi with such views and with a 400 sq. meter garden inside the city walls. During the cold months we ask that gas and electricity be reimbursed (as well as wood if any is used in the fireplaces). During summer rentals only the electricity will be charged. Both are metered. The City of Todi levies a tourist tax of €1.5 per person for a maximum of 4 nights. We will collected this at the end of your stay.

Historic house and setting with an Italian authenticity
This is a charming medieval town house close to the historic centre of Todi, a grand citadel high on the hill above the Umbrian countryside. The house is largely unaltered, but comfortable, with stunning views. The towering church next door, the steep alleyway outside and the delightful twittering of housemartins above, just add to its beauty. Highly recommended.

Stay in Todi
We were met at the airport by Stephano (connected with him thru George). We also rented a car from Stephano. We had a pleasant drive to Todi and learned some history of the area. when we arrived at the house the cleaning lady was ill so there was a substitute. She may have felt some pressure since we arrived early. Stephan showed us around the house, which is lovely. George was always available for my many questions. George and his wife had everything we needed for our stay in their house or they made sure we would get what we needed. We had 2 couples and the house worked out well for us. The house was in a great location and could walk easily to the town square of course going up inclines and visit the sites of Todi. We would have breakfast every morning at the house and then venture out to another hill town to explore. We would come back to the house in late afternoon and enjoy the use of the patio in backyard and sip on wine, deciding where to go to dinner or have snacks and enjoy the view at the house. My only regret is not seeing George's photographs at a gallery and the Painted House right up the street from George's house. M.A.

Thank you George!
Wonderful warm and welcoming house. We were so lucky to meet the host! The house had no feeling of a commercialized rental- just a home where you belong, everything at your fingertips plus a gorgeous view, that makes you want to stay forever. Thank you again!

Incredible host, house and location
The host was the most communicative that I have ever experienced. He sent informational emails before Check-in, excellent Check-in directions, and checked in with during our stay. A book with recommendations was on hand as was an email sent on arrival with links to suggested places to visit. The house itself is rustic and authentic. The town is beautiful. We had great food, gelato and coffee. With the steep hike up to the piazza and walking the town, the food had no effect on our waistlines. Day trips included a Roman ruin, winery and other small hill top towns. Only caution is the streets are narrow and driving is a challenge.

Charm in Todi
First of all, the owner was wonderfully helpful in linking me to a local car rental, which not only allowed us to bypass the chaos of an airport rental but also provided transportation from Firenze to Todi. This ride even included an educational side trip to the local supermarket prior to check-in. The apartment is charming; with comfortable beds and living room furniture, a spacious and well-appointed kitchen, and wonderful views from the second story. My only caveat to future guests is that in September the large fig tree which overhangs much of the garden is dropping its fruit on the lawn and patio.

About the host

My wife, Lynn, and I moved to Italy way back in 1973 after graduating from Beloit College in Wisconsin, where we met. I'm a photographer and Lynn teaches English. My mother was Italian and I have lots of relatives here. We have two children, William, a pianist/composer who lives in NYC and Alice, a contemporary dancer who lives in London.

I began my career as a photographer using Todi as a base. I shot mostly portraits and landscapes and was often hired by the Regional authorities to work on large exhibitions which required photographs for its catalogues. I was then hired by the Alinari Archives in Florence to become their Director of Photography, the reason we moved there in 1988. In 2003 I left the archive and returned to free-lancing and to exhibiting my work. I was awarded the Friuli Venezia Giulia prize for photography in 2010. My recent book Italia Metafisica won an IPA award in NY in 2015 and the Hemingway Award in Italy in 2016. You can see some of my work at www.georgetatge.com.

Why they chose this property

For years we searched for a property here and finally found it. One that we could restore as we wanted. Our house is in the neighbourhood of Borgo, one of the oldest areas, inside the first ring of the Etruscan town. We lived in Todi for 14 years between 1974 and 1988. It is truly an 'Ideal City', but don't tell too many people, or it will turn into another San Gimignano (the town in Tuscany with more tourists than townsfolk).
