Spacious 2/3 bedroom house with spectacular view over valley.. 4 night

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
The house is part of a medieval village uniquely restored by a sculptor.

A delightful and very comfortable house in northern Tuscany, covered with purple bougainvillea in the summer months, standing at the end of the cluster of stone houses that form peaceful Peralta, a medieval hamlet restored by a sculptor. An inspiring, romantic and unique place. The rooms of La Foresteria are all large with high ceilings and are very attractively decorated and furnished. The dining room has hand painted motifs all over the beamed ceiling. All rooms and the terrace have stunning, panoramic views over the valley towards the hills and the sea beyond.

The house has three floors:

the ground floor has a large dining room with fireplace and covered terrace with barbecue, ideal for eating out. The kitchen has all necessary equipment and leads off the dining room.. There is a bathroom with hower, WC. etc on this floor.

First floor comprises a very comfortable living room leading out to a large terrace and panoramic view over the valley towards the sea. There is a bedroom with 3 single beds, two of which can form a double bed, a bathroom (bath) and WC.

The top floor has a huge double bedroom - lovely beamed ceiling - en suite washroom/WC and the same fantastic view as the floor below.

There is the possibility of adding a third double bedroom with its ensuite bathroom (shower). This room has its own entrance off a small terrace.

The beautiful peaceful hamlet of Peralta has a spectacular setting in the Tuscan hills that rise high above the valley of Camaiore. It was restored over a period of thirty years with great love and imagination by international sculptor Fiore de Henriquez. She created a place that is quite unique. Peralta was her home up to her death in June 2004, and one can see her work all through the hamlet. Her sculpture everywhere, and the manner in which she restored and designed the hamlet, give it very special atmosphere and character. With stunning, panoramic views over the valley to the hills and sea beyond and surrounded by terraces of olive groves, its stone walls covered with purple bougainvilleas, lemon trees, jasmine, Peralta seems like paradise. There is a swimming pool on one of the upper terraces, a tranquil spot with a panoramic view towards the sea. The large terrace in front of Peralta is a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunsets and meet other guests.

Surrounding area: Lovely walking country with marked trails through the olive groves and hills dense with chestnut trees and known for their wild flowers in spring and autumn. Walks range from 50 minutes to a delightful restaurant in an adjoining village, to three hours up to the peak of the Mount Prana above Peralta. Although secluded, the motorway is only 20 mins away so sightseeing is easy. Shopping in Florence/Lucca/Forte dei Marmi is legendary! Porto Venere & the Cinque Terre are 1 hour away. The sculptor's town of Pietrasanta takes 20 minutes and has many cafes and restaurants. Beaches are 30 mins away. The closest shops (grocer and greengrocer) are just minutes down the hill where there is also a bar/pizza restaurant. The market town of Camaiore takes 10 minutes by car. Peralta offers self catering accommodation sleeping from 2 to 8 and 4 additional bedrooms with bathrooms. The whole hamlet can be let out for parties, sleeping a total of 32 people. Please ask us for our website address

Access:: Airports: Pisa 45 mins - Florence 1 hr. Genoa 1 hr.40mins - Bologna 2hrs. From the A11 and A12 motorway exit, Viareggio/Camaiore, you head for 'Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore'. Then for 'Camaiore'. From Camaiore, there is a little road that leaves the valley and winds its way up the hill to Pieve di Camaiore, then to Peralta. (We give detailed directions).

Note: The last 200 or so yards of our road are very steep and narrow with 2 hairpin bends. A smallish car is recommended, although an Espace & other large cars can make it!! This last bit of road is unsuitable for nervous drivers. The road comes to an end in our carpark. From there you walk to Peralta itself (about 200 yards/meters) and we can help with luggage (9am to 6pm). . Don't be put off by the last piece of road - Peralta more than merits the effort! And if you are in a very large car, you can always park it below the hairpin bends. Only a short walk up to the carpark.

We have stayed in Peralta two times. First time three years ago with a baby girl aged one and a girl aged 12. We lived in La Foresteria, which is a very charming and special house with two terraces. There is a lot of space for one family here. One nice pergola outside the kitchen area, where we had all our meals and one balcony on the first floor with a view we have not found any other place in Tuscany. And we have been in the region seven times. It is just magical and you feel like beiing on the top of the world when you relax and enjoy the sundown while sipping on a glas of rosso. You actually look down at the fireworks in the valley from this balcony!

a wonderful place

We had a wonderful time at Peralta.

The location of the house is really outstanding with a beautiful view onto the valley of Camaiore.

The house has so much love for details, the paintings on the ceilings the beautiful rustique kitchen and there is a bathroom for each bedroom.

Even though the drive up to Peralta is a bit of an adventure and we really do recommend a smaller car to go up, we really enjoyed the location as it is so peaceful and quiet. We can surely recommend everyone to go there.

A fine holiday

  • 5 of 5

An excellent house, near Pisa and Lucca and the beach. Ample room for 6 persons in la Foresteria + its annex.

The house is well furnished and has fine terraces.

La torre pendente in Pisa is open again! A must to climb it.

Highly recommendable.

Terrific stay.

  • 5 of 5

Peralta was even more beautiful than the photos and descriptions on the website. The views are spectacular, the property itself lovingly restored and the house delightful. The sculptures at various places on the grounds add a special aesthetic - they work so well with the surrounding natural beauty. The owner and managers were very accessible and helpful when needed.

The only mildly negative aspect was the recent landslide that took out a portion of the road to the property. The extra walk was only about 10 minutes and a car was made available if needed. And repair was in progress so presumably this won't be an issue in the future.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property friends.

Wonderful walks and close to nearby interesting towns and the seaside. Dinah and her team are very friendly and go out of their way to please. The gorgeous 13century estate is fantastic even though the access us challenging. Definitely worth a stay.

Beyond Words!

  • 5 of 5

Sitting on our deck over looking the blue Mediterranean, looking down at Camaorie in the Valley, drinking lemon water with lemon that we could have picked from the many lemon trees here(If we were allowed) I wonder how to give this miraculous place a review that my words could adequately express. Tuscany.....a place where I have wanted to go since....forever. Pictures, Movies are what was in my minds eye as to what this place would be like. Our La Foresteria home fill those dreams and so much more! How can I explain our quaint, old, tastefully decorated simple Tuscan home. With its wood burning fireplace (in which we used on those chilly spring nights) to our view from our third floor bedroom. We sat up there at night on our tiny chairs drinking our Chianti before bed looking and talking about our amazing vacation home. We were there in the spring, beautiful warm days and very cool evenings, even so our windows wide open, deep under our feather duvet...the unit has no heat...but there is no need. The Grounds are very well kept - the terratzza...out front where guests can go to visit if they so please. A little bar on the honor system - who sees that now-a-days. The swimming pool on the upper level was not open, but I imagine that it is a lovely spot in the warm summer months. The purple wisteria, Fiore's sculptures throughout......Olive trees, the before mentioned Lemon and orange trees, bushes of rosemary and sage! It is truly a magnificent spot!

The friendliness and helpfulness of Kate, Stephan and Dinah...beyond what is expected.

Our only concern was the steep walk up to the house (not their fault the road washed out in the winter), in fact the walk probably did me a lot of good! But if I wasn't walking.....I would be driving a very narrow ride up...umm the walk didn't seem so bad!

We visited, Florence, Pisa and Lucca while staying at Peralta, all close driving distance for day trips away. But the best days were the quiet, relaxing days at Peralta!

We enjoyed the Pizza Restaurant in Pieve, and used the grocery store there to stock our kitchen. We did take advantage of having our meals made for us one night,(delicious Italian sausage and Chicken) but then enjoyed cooking our meals on the barbeque the rest of the time, if we did not dine out when site seeing.

Overall, I cannot explain very well the place that is Peralta. A must to experience....Our Italian Home!

A beautifully kept, inspirational house

  • 5 of 5

This was a truly beautiful place to stay. Our house for the week, Foresteria had so much character, and felt so much more than a holiday let. It felt like an artistic and Inspirational home to think, draw, rest, eat and play (our 3 boys aged 4, 8, 11 loved it) The views were stunning and many evenings were passed staring into the valley, watching the lights, or looking at the amazing sky. The initial hair raising ride up to Peralta is well worth it!!! we really enjoyed the home cooked food, so tasty, from Laura, which was a welcome change from cooking ourselves and eating out.

The sculpture tour of Fiore's work was inspirational, and a real highlight of our stay.

The pool and its views were just sublime. The Peralta is a gorgeous place to stay, and Foresteria its most beautiful accomodation.

Thank you to Kate and the team.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your enthusiastic review of your stay at Peralta. It is always lovely for all of us who work here to know our guests had a good time. I am especially delighted that you enjoyed seeing Fiore's sculpture so much - I love showing people around her studio, looking at her work and explaining how she came to Peralta and subsequently restored it. Hope to see you all back here one day. Dinah

Location

From the Owner

International sculptor Fiore de Henriquez was living in the area of Camaiore from the 1960's due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend of her's who is the current owner. . Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation, of which La Foresteria is one.

Peralta is a hillside hamlet situated in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane (national park), 10 min from the market town of Camaiore in the valley which, in turn, is 10 min inland from the coast.

It is an exciting area to explore: you can spend the day in the mountains or go to the sea. The proximity of the Carrara mountains and the bronze foundries of Pietrasanta has made the area a favourite place to live and work for sculptors and other artists.

The hills and mountains around us are wonderful for walking and hiking in spring, early summer and autumn. Botanists are always excited by the range of wild flowers and bulbs.

Tourist Attractions: The beautiful walled city of Lucca is a 35 min drive to the south..

The A12/A11 autoroute exit takes 20 min, making day trips to Siena (2 h), Carrara & its marble mines (45 min) very easy.

the closest is Viareggio, the most popular Forte dei Marmi (35 min or so). The Cinque Terre are one hour away - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent.

Shopping in the area (Lucca/Florence/Forte dei Marmi) is legendary! The sculptors' town of Pietrasanta is only 20 min away.

Peralta is Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 min away). Open air opera Festival taking place on the edge of a lake in July and August at Torre del Lago.

We have a mountain of information and suggestions for our guests, including directions for walks, when and where local markets happen, brocante markets,' must visit' places and restaurants, our favourite mountain drive, etc etc

Peralta feels wonderfully remote and secluded and yet is, in fact, very accessible.

In the daytime, there is always someone on site to help with all inquiries regarding day trips, ferry times, advice on this and that.

Airports: Pisa 45 min, Florence 1 h, Genoa 1 h, 40min - Bologna 2 h, Milan 3 1/2 h.

Facilities

From the Owner

La Foresteria is part of the hamlet of Peralta and so benefits from the unique charm of the place. It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore was before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore would say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I enjoy showing to guests. Once a week, I invite (at aperitivo time!) any guests staying at Peralta to visit the gallery and Fiore's former house. I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ...... possibly even fall in love with it! Dinah Voisin
